Abstract

A vehicle seat that strokes during an energy absorption process is able to reset. The seat can therefore stroke again, in the same stroking volume, for example during a secondary ground impact after a mine blast. An energy absorber associated with the seat is operative to absorb energy once during the first stroke and is also operative to absorb energy a second time when the seat strokes a second time.

Claims (15)

1. A method of protecting an occupant of a vehicle seat, including the steps of:
utilizing a stroke volume to absorb energy applied to the seat a first time; and utilizing the same stroke volume a second time to absorb energy applied to the seat a second time.
2. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the step of utilizing a stroke volume to absorb energy applied to the seat a first time includes:
moving a first seat portion relative to a second seat portion, the first seat portion carrying the vehicle occupant and the second seat portion being fixed to the vehicle structure; and absorbing energy with an energy absorber that is coupled between the first and second seat portions.
3. A method as set forth in claim 2 wherein the step of absorbing energy includes the step of deforming metal.
4. A seat assembly for an occupant of a vehicle, including:
a seat having first and second seat portions that are movable relative to each other in a first direction in response to sudden force applied to the seat assembly; and an energy absorber associated with the seat that is operative to absorb energy upon relative movement of the first and second seat portions in the first direction;
the first and second seat portions being movable relative to each other in a resetting direction to reset the seat; and the energy absorber being operative to absorb energy again upon subsequent relative movement of the first and second seat portions in the first direction.
5. A seat assembly as set forth in claim 4 wherein the energy absorber absorbs energy by deforming material.
6. A seat assembly as set forth in claim 5 wherein the material deformed is metal wire that is deformed by bending around a mandrel.
7. A seat assembly as set forth in claim 4 wherein the first seat portion is a seat pan supporting a seat bottom cushion and the second seat portion is a seat frame fixed to the vehicle structure and the seat pan pivots relative to the seat frame.
8. A method of protecting an occupant of a vehicle seat in response to the sudden application of force to the seat, the method including the steps of:
moving first and second portions of the seat relative to each other in a first direction in response to the application of force;
absorbing energy during the relative movement of the first and second seat portions in the first direction;
resetting the first and second seat portions; and absorbing energy again upon subsequent relative movement of the first and second seat portions in the first direction.
9. A method as set forth in claim 8 wherein the step of absorbing energy includes deforming a wire over a mandrel.
10. A method as set forth in claim 9 wherein the step of resetting the first and second seat portions includes the step of moving the wire through a gripper.
11. A method as set forth in claim 10 wherein the step of deforming a wire includes pulling the wire over the mandrel with the gripper.
12. A method as set forth in claim 8 wherein the first vehicle seat portion is a seat pan and the second vehicle portion is a seat frame that supports the seat pan for pivotal movement relative to the seat frame.
13. Apparatus comprising:
a seat frame;
a seat pan supported on the seat frame for movement relative to the seat frame; and an energy absorber coupled between the seat pan and the seat frame, the energy absorber including a wire gripper fixed for movement with the seat pan, a mandrel fixed for movement with the seat frame, a wire wrapped around the mandrel and extending through the wire gripper, and a spring connected between the wire and the seat pan.
14. Apparatus as set forth in claim 10 wherein the seat pan is supported on the seat frame for pivotal movement relative to the seat frame, the energy absorber absorbs energy of pivotal movement of the seat pan relative to the seat frame in a first direction, and the seat resets by pivotal movement of the seat pan relative to the seat frame in a second direction opposite the first direction.
15. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 wherein the gripper moves relative to the mandrel when the seat pan moves relative to the seat frame, the gripper pulls the wire across the mandrel to absorb energy, and the wire moves through the gripper during resetting of the seat.
