Integrated Navigational Systems in Shopping Trolleys
1. This innovation falls within Retail Technology, encompassing the integration of 2024202968
1.
navigational systems into shopping trolleys. This invention also intersects with Location-Based Services, Internet of Things (IoT), and User Interface Design, leveraging technology to optimise the retail shopping journey.
1. 1. The concept of integrating navigational systems into shopping trolleys represents a novel approach to enhancing the shopping experience in supermarkets and malls. This innovation stems from the growing demand for efficiency, convenience, and improved customer service within retail environments. With the advent of smart technologies and the ubiquity of navigation applications, there exists a ripe opportunity to revolutionize how customers navigate through shopping centres and supermarkets. 2. Traditional shopping experiences often involve wandering through aisles searching for specific items, leading to inefficiencies and frustrations for shoppers. Additionally, in large shopping malls, visitors may struggle to locate specific stores or amenities (such as toilets or baby change rooms), leading to suboptimal experience. 3. 3. The proposed navigational system seeks to address these challenges by providing real-time guidance to shoppers within the supermarket or mall environment. By integrating GPS or indoor positioning systems (IPS) technology with smart trolleys or tablets, users can input their shopping lists and receive optimised routes to efficiently navigate through the store or mall, minimizing the time spent searching for items. 4. 4. The navigational system can be implemented through two primary methods: 5. 5. Smart Trolley Navigation System: Incorporating GPS or IPS technology directly into shopping trolleys through built-in displays or connectivity with user’s smartphones, allowing for real-time navigation assistance. Consumers may be able to pay through the trolley via Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale (EFTPOS).
6. Smart Tablet Addition: Retrofitting existing trolleys with smart tablets equipped with 01 Jul 2024 2024202968 01 Jul 2024
the navigation application, enabling users to access navigation features while shopping. 7. 7. The concept of integrating navigational systems into shopping trolleys draws inspiration from the successful implementation of similar technologies in other contexts, notably the smart trolleys introduced at Hyderabad Airports. These 2024202968
innovative airport trolleys, equipped with digital displays and navigation functionalities, have demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of incorporating technology into traditional card-based systems. 8. 8. The success of smart trolleys at Hyderabad Airport serves as a compelling example of how technology can enhance user experiences and streamline processes in dynamic environments. By leveraging this inspiration, the proposed integration of navigational systems in shopping trolleys aims to extend similar benefits to the retail sector, addressing common pain points such as navigation challenges and time inefficiencies.
Advantages
1. Increased convenience: Shoppers can easily locate items on their shopping list without the need to search through aisles, enhancing the overall shopping experience. 2. Time efficiency: by optimizing routes based on individual shopping lists, shopper can complete their purchases more quickly, reducing checkout queues and wait times. If the application has an “add-to-cart” option during the shopping experience, customers will simply need to “scan-to-pay” at the checkout counter. 3. Enhanced staff productivity: With less reliance on staff assistance for navigation, employees can focus on other tasks, such as restocking shelves, assisting customers, or redirected to managing checkout counters. 4. Improved consumer satisfaction: providing a seamless navigation experience fosters positive perceptions of the store/ mall, leading to higher customer satisfaction and potential repeat visits.
Disadvantages 01 Jul 2024 2024202968 01 Jul 2024
1. Theft and security concerns: Smart trolleys equipped with valuable technology components may become targets for theft. To mitigate this risk, an automatic wheel lock activation system could be implemented within a certain radius from the origin of the mall. This feature will deter theft by immobilising the trolley if it strays beyond 2024202968
the designated area, thus safeguarding against unauthorised removal. 2. Increased production costs: The incorporation of sophisticated technology into traditional shopping trolleys inevitably raises production costs. Retailers may face challenges in absorbing these additional expenses without passing them on to consumers. However, retail stores/ major supermarket chains can leverage existing rewards programs to incentivize customers to adopt smart trolleys. By offering exclusive discounts or rewards for using smart trolleys, businesses can encourage customer participation while simultaneously boosting revenues and offsetting production costs. 3. Technical issues and maintenance: Like any electronic device, smart trolleys are susceptible to technical malfunctions and require regular servicing and troubleshooting. Retailers must allocate resources for ongoing maintenance to ensure the reliability and functionality of the navigational systems. Implementing a comprehensive maintenance schedule and providing dedicated support services can help mitigate the risk of technical failures and minimize disruptions to the shopping experience.
The integration of navigation systems into shopping trolleys represents a significant improvement over the existing method in several ways:
1. Enhanced convenience and efficiency: a. Streamlined overall shopping process, b. Enhanced shopping experience (in terms of navigation and payments), c. Personalisation of consumer’s needs enables them to complete their purchase more quickly and with less hassle
4 2. Real-time guidance and adaptability: 01 Jul 2024 2024202968 01 Jul 2024
a. Unlike static store maps or signage, navigational systems in shopping trolleys provide real-time guidance based on dynamic factors such as item availability, aisle congestion, and store layout changes. b. Ensures that consumers receive accurate and up-to-date navigation assistance, even in complex or crowded environments. 2024202968
c. Consumers can be automatically redirected based on real-time updates within the store/ mall 3. Seamless integration with existing infrastructure a. The proposed navigational systems can be seamlessly integrated into existing shopping trolleys or supplemented with smart tablets, ensuring compatibility with established retail environments, b. This approach minimises implementation barriers and allows retailers to leverage their existing infrastructure while still offering innovative navigation capabilities to customers.

DETAILED DETAILED DESCRIPTION DESCRIPTION OF OF EMBODIMENTS 01 Jul 2024 2024202968 01 Jul 2024
1. Navigation system (tablet)-
The navigation system is embedded in a tablet (denoted as 1 in Figure 1) attached to the front of the trolley. This system works in real time to guide the user to the location of the commodity inside the store (Figure 2) or navigate to the desired store within a shopping mall 2024202968
(Figure 3). The application can be built by mapping the area inside the store. Commodities inside a grocery store are located in shelves and aisles. Stores like Coles and Woolworths have online catalogues showing the commodities that are available in-store. The navigation system can be built using these data to locate the required commodity at the aisle and shelf that it is on.
The way this works is similar to current stationery navigation systems inside a mall, where you can use the touchscreen to locate the store you want to visit, and the system maps out the way to get there.
The navigation system proposed in this patent is superior because it is in real time and the user is guided all the way to the destination.
To create this indoor navigation system, we will need to create the indoor map using the floorplan; locate the Points of Interest (POI), which are aisles and shelves; and use a numbering system to map each commodity.
2. QR code with wheel locking system-
The QR code is embedded in the tablet (Figure 2, 3). An application on the user’s mobile phone will be required to scan the code to activate the navigation system and unlock the trolley. Similarly, once the user has finished shopping, the trolley will be returned to a designated parking bay within the premises to park the trolley.
This type of system is used in Singapore to access public bicycles. Their app Anywheel works on this concept. The same concept is being applied to this patent. The application can be built to suit the store such as Coles or Woolworths and this application can be embedded within existing Rewards applications for these stores.
Designated areas will need to be made to allow trolley returns, and a wheel locking system 01 Jul 2024 2024202968 01 Jul 2024
(denoted as 2 in Figure 1) will be implemented to avoid thefts. The wheel locking mechanism will be a simple auto-clamping device that is activated when the trolley is moved outside the prescribed boundary of the premises. This will be done during the mapping and software building stage for the navigation system. The prescribed area within which the trolley is to function will be mapped to allow its functionality only within the premises. 2024202968
A secondary option to restrict theft will be to use RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) to alert security if a trolley is taken out of the premises. This will not require additional software and works the same as current shopping centres with RFID alarms at the entrances.
