Childhood Peer Victimization, Identity Diffusion and Disordered Eating Behaviors in Emerging Adults

However, less is known about the mechanisms involved in this association, especially in emerging adulthood. The present study examined the relationship between harmfulness of the CPV experiences, identity diffusion and DEBs using Structural Equation Modeling. Emphasis was given in the investigation of the indirect effect of CPV harmfulness on DEBs through identity diffusion. Data from 414 emerging adults was collected via an online questionnaire. The analysis indicated significant direct effects of CPV harmfulness on both restrictive and binge-eating. More importantly, findings supported the indirect relationship between CPV harmfulness and binge-eating through identity diffusion. Results provide preliminary support for the role of CPV harmfulness and identity diffusion as contributing factors in the development of DEBs in emerging adults. Implications for future research are discussed.

Given the paucity of research in this area, the purpose of this study was the examination of the relationship between parenting styles and trait EI in an adolescent population. The sample of our study consisted of 127 adolescents (M age = 16.4, SD = 0.96; 42.2% female) from Greek schools, 15-19 years old, who were asked to complete questionnaires of perceived parenting (Parental Authority Questionnaire-PAQ) and trait EI (Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Adolescent Short Form-TEIQue-ASF). The estimation of the association between parenting scores and trait EI was based on a multivariable mixed-effects regression model. An association between parenting styles and trait EI, statistically significant for authoritativeness (b = 0.27, z = 3.92, p < 0.001) and marginally significant for authoritarianism (b =-0.10, z =-1.77, p = 0.08), emerged even after controlling for a set of potential predictors of trait EI. Additionally, statistically significant associations of adolescents' gender (b =-0.29, z =-2.37, p = 0.02) and parental education (b = 0.32, z = 2.54, p = 0.01) with trait EI were found. These findings provide insight in the field of trait EI antecedents and underline the potential significance of primary prevention programs with parents that aim to develop trait EI at a young age.

Despite the fact that parenting research has largely neglected the role of the father, there are indications that paternal acceptance can play a protective role against maternal rejection. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the effect of maternal rejection indicators on victimization, and to examine whether paternal acceptance moderates this effect, in a cross-cultural sample of 846 (Mage = 12.63, SDage = 1.01, Ngirls = 403) of Greek (N = 471) and Cypriot (N = 375) early adolescents, following a short-term longitudinal research design (six-month interval). Students completed self-report measures. Results indicated that the maternal rejection had a strong effect on victimization six months later, even when taking into account initial victimization levels, and that paternal acceptace moderated this effect to a large extend. The findings are discussed and suggestions for future research are given.

Longitudinal associations between parental rejection and bullying/victimization

Using a cross-lagged design, we examined whether (a) bullying and victimization predict an increase in parental rejection six months later, (b) parental rejection predicts an increase in bullying and victimization six months later, and (c) there is a reciprocal association between bullying/victimization and parental rejection. The participants were 846 early adolescents (mean age = 12.63 years) randomly selected from primary and secondary schools in Cyprus and Greece (375 Cypriots, 471 Greek students) and their parents. Children completed a translated version of the Personal Experiences Checklist – (PECK) and the Rejection subscale of the Parental Acceptance/Rejection Questionnaire. The results showed that parental rejection at Time 1 predicted significantly victimization at Time 2. Parental rejection however, was not a significant predictor of bullying. Moreover, bullying and victimization at Time 1 predicted significantly parental rejection at Time 2. These results provide further insight at the theoretical level in as far our understanding of the familial dynamics in bullying victimization and may provide clinical implications in relation to counselling of victimized children and their parents.

In a Web-based survey with 1203 Greek parents, we identified parenting styles and their SDQ reports on their children. According to our results by Latent Profile Analysis, we must use a more complex approach concerning parenting styles. We identified a “Highly Authoritative style” profile with high levels of authoritative, low levels of authoritarian and middle levels of permissive parenting styles. We additionally identified a profile called “Relaxed Authoritative style”, with still high but lower levels of authoritative style, low but slightly heightened levels of authoritarian style, and middle levels of permissive style. A further profile, named “Permissive Focused Authoritative style”, had a mix of high levels of authoritative, moderate levels of permissive, and elevated levels of authoritari...

Its aim is to present the studies focusing on the subject from an "invented spelling" perspective and to discuss the results obtained. Results seem to be in accordance with the results obtained by similar studies in other countries and in different languages, thus supporting the idea of the existence of a universal character to the ways preschool children conceptualise writing.

The present study examined how parenting style and family perfectionism is associated with the manifestation of perfectionism in a sample of 855 Greek university students, using the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (APS-R), the Family Almost Perfect Scale (FAPS) and the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ). The subscales of APS-R and FAPS are combined to provide three types of personal and family perfectionism respectively (adaptive, maladaptive, absence of perfectionism), whereas PAQ distinguishes three parenting styles (authoritarian, permissive, authoritative). The authoritative parenting style was positively associated with adaptive perfectionism in both genders and negatively associated with maladaptive perfectionism among women, the authoritarian parenting style was positively associated with maladaptive perfectionism among men, whereas the permissive parenting style was positively associated w...
