It can be understood as a kind of folding back upon itself of learning processes that are found everywhere in nature. The basic folding back that lies at the root of education occurs when spontaneous learning processes are selected and amplified in directed teaching. More recently, there has been another such folding back upon itself of the curriculum to select and amplify those aspects of education that lead to creativity and critical thinking, thereby focusing more on the design of the future than on the transmission of the past. My argument in this chapter is that the shift to criticality and design is not a break with the past but a continuation of a natural developmental pattern 1 .
