This study explores the profound impact of parental separation on the academic performance of secondary school students in Mushin Local Government Area, Lagos State. Drawing on a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 150 students across five randomly selected secondary schools. The study examines the direct effects of parental separation, the influence of single-parent households, and the emotional and psychological consequences on academic engagement. Additionally, it evaluates the role of school-based support systems, including counselling services, in mitigating these impacts. Findings will contribute to understanding how best to support students from separated families academically and emotionally.

A descriptive survey research design was employed due to the need to gather data from a large number of respondents within a limited timeframe. The study addressed specific research questions and tested hypotheses to ascertain its findings. The researcher developed a statistical raw data set and questionnaire, validated by the supervisor, which was administered to 300 married mothers selected through simple random sampling.
The sample size was deemed adequate and representative as it encompassed mothers from diverse backgrounds, despite being drawn from various sections. Data analysis utilized descriptive statistics such as frequency counts and percentages for respondent demographics, while Chi-square tests were employed to assess hypotheses. The findings indicated a significant correlation between the physical abuse of mothers and the psychosocial well-being of adolescents, as well as a notable association between maternal abuse and poor academic performance among children.
Based on the study's outcomes, several recommendations were proposed. These included implementing home visitation programs aimed at supporting first-time parents in high-risk social settings prone to maltreatment reports. Furthermore, public awareness campaigns should be intensified to educate the populace about the risks associated with partner/spousal physical abuse, alongside advocating for legislation to prosecute offenders. Mothers were also encouraged to educate themselves on gender-based violence, emphasizing prevention through education and empowerment. Additionally, supporting women in discussing domestic violence openly and leveraging social media platforms to raise awareness about gender-based violence were highlighted as effective strategies to combat abuse and promote safety
