is defined. Otherwise compiler may complain about unused variables.
use the err and errx functions to properly die. Add consts, where appropriate. Add __printflike-qualifier to the functions, which are printf-like. Declare static functions as such. Other minor fixes to ensure clean compile with reasonable warnings turned-on.
