Oh, they have plenty of uses, more than enough to justify the marginal cost of inference, particularly as the AI companies find ways to optimize. I suspect the best models could even earn back their gargantuan up-front costs... eventually.

But it won't happen soon, and when they hit the point that they can no longer find new investors or squeeze more out of the old ones, creditors care neither for vanity nor sunk costs. Then we'll see who planned for hard times and who didn't.
