Abstract

This study explores an innovative way to increase students' learning motivation in a cross-culture understanding (CCU) class at an English Language Teaching study program in a private university in Indonesia. The lecturer assigned EFL students to find international students to share their cultures to solve students' lack of motivation in indoor learning activities. From observation, interview, and an online survey to 94 students (four classes), 98.9 % agreed that the international students' guest lecture method could increase EFL students' motivation to learn CCU. The Indonesian lecturer exposed to global culture and international students exposed to Indonesian culture becomes the primary resource for Indonesian EFL students to get insight and inspiration for their intercultural communication and adaptation practices.

The steps were identification, classification and description of errors by using tabulation.Furthermore, the researcher followed the error analysis procedures to analyze the data. Moreover, the errors were classified into surface strategy taxonomy theory as proposed Dulay et al. the result shows that the most dominant errors were misformation 34 (40%) followed by omission 33 (38.83%), misordering 10 (11.77%), and addition 8 (9.42%) so, the total errors from the skripsi discussion were 85 errors. Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to predict the relationship among the use of metacognitive reading strategies, motivation, and reading comprehension ability. Thirty-five university students of second semester especially from English Language Department at University of Islam Malang were shared the questionnaires of Reading strategies and motivation followed by answering a reading test. A quantitative method was used with correlational design. The findings implied the students use different strategies when reading text. PROB (Problem-Solving Strategies) was most frequently used in students’ reading activity. They also had high motivation when reading academic text since they are curious about the contents. In reading comprehension aspect, most of students got low predicate or perform below the average. Pearson product moment and spearman rank correlation in SPSS 25 were used to predict the relationship among the variables. The result showed that metacognitive reading strategies cannot be made to predict the increase of reading comprehension ability. Nevertheless, there is a significant correlation between metacognitive reading strategies and motivation. The findings contradict with the findings of most previous studies. Therefore, more investigations need conducting since there are other factors affecting reading comprehension performance such as students’ linguistic knowledge, and also the appropriateness of strategy used. Keywords: reading, metacognitive reading strategies, reading motivation, reading comprehension

However, the limitation of classroom-based vocabulary learning to cover large amount of vocabulary, implies the necessity of learning vocabulary independently and regulate their learning effectively. This study aims to identify the learners’ autonomy and self-regulation strategies in learning vocabulary as well as the benefits and difficulties of independent vocabulary learning. This study implements descriptive qualitative design with questionnaire as instrument in data collection. The researcher collects the data taken from 10 late-semester students in University of Islam Malang. The result shows that all students learn vocabulary independently on their own preferences, but only four students are autonomously self-regulate, the other respondents considered ineffective in self-regulation. In the identification of independent learning benefits and difficulties, the researcher found seven benefits and five problems.
