Abstract

This study explores the students’ perceptions of using podcasts to improve their English-speaking skills at Business English Communication program. The study is motivated by the growing integration of technology in education, particularly in language learning, where podcast offer a flexible and engaging medium. Using a qualitative approach, the research investigated how students perceive the effectiveness, interest, and relevance of podcasts in enhancing their speaking abilities. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed to understand the perceived benefits and challenges. The findings indicate that students generally view podcasts positively, appreciating their convenience and the opportunity to hear authentic English. However, some challenges, such as accessibility and the need for self-discipline, were noted. The study contributes to the theoretical understanding of media-based learning and provides practical insights for educators and curriculum developers aiming to incorporate digital media into language instruction effectively.

Abstract

This study investigates the emergence of pragmatic competence in early childhood through the analysis of speech acts performed by two children aged 2 years and 3 months (Child 1) and 2 years and 5 months (Child 2). Through the lens of Austin’s and Searle’s speech act theory, the qualitative study focuses on spontaneous utterances that are collected during natural interactions, such as play and daily routines. The findings reveal that even at a very young age, children are capable of performing various speech acts, including asserting, requesting, refusing, and expressing ownership which indicate their growing ability to use language intentionally and effectively. The analysis highlights the presence of locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts in the children’s speech, promoting the view that pragmatic competence begins to develop well before formal schooling. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of early language development and provide insight into the cognitive and communicative abilities of young children.

Abstract

Abstrak. Pemilihan Mahasiswa Berprestasi (Pilmapres) merupakan salah satu strategi penting dalam penguatan kapasitas mahasiswa di lingkungan perguruan tinggi. Pelaporan kegiatan ini  mengkaji praktik baik Pelaksanaan Pilmapres di Fakultas Bahasa dan Sastra Universitas Negeri Makassar sebagai upaya pembinaan mahasiswa secara holistik. Metode pelaksanaan melibatkan enam tahapan sistematis mulai dari sosialisasi, seleksi di tingkat program studi dan fakultas, hingga presentasi gagasan dan pengumuman pemenang, didukung dengan pembimbingan intensif dari dosen dan alumni.Hasil pelaksanaan menunjukkan partisipasi aktif mahasiswa dari seluruh program studi, kualitas gagasan ilmiah yang kritis dan relevan dengan isu kebahasaan kontemporer, serta peningkatan kemampuan presentasi dan komunikasi ilmiah peserta. Terpilihnya tiga mahasiswa terbaik pada tingkat fakultas memberikan motivasi dan inspirasi bagi mahasiswa lain untuk mengembangkan potensi diri secara optimal. Kegiatan ini juga memperkuat jejaring kolaboratif antara mahasiswa, dosen, dan alumni, menciptakan ekosistem pembinaan yang berkelanjutan dan mendukung budaya kompetitif yang sehat di kampus. Kesimpulannya, Pilmapres di Fakultas Bahasa dan Sastra Universitas Negeri Makassar merupakan model praktik baik penguatan kapasitas mahasiswa yang efektif, memberikan kontribusi signifikan terhadap peningkatan mutu lulusan serta pencapaian indikator kinerja perguruan tinggi. Model pembinaan ini layak direplikasi oleh institusi pendidikan tinggi lain sebagai strategi pengembangan sumber daya manusia yang kompeten, berdaya saing, dan berkarakter kepemimpinan kuat.Kata Kunci: Mahasiswa Berprestasi, Fakultas Bahasa dan Sastra, Universitas Negeri Makassar, Prestasi

Abstract

Pelatihan penulisan copywriting dan penyelenggaraan pameran iklan ini ditujukan bagi mahasiswa program studi Bahasa Inggris Terapan D4 atau dikenal juga dengan prodi Business English Communication, FBS, Universitas Negeri Makassar. Rangkaian kegiatan tersebut merupakan project dari mata kuliah English for Advertising. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk mengenalkan copywriting atau proses pembuatan naskah iklan kepada mahasiswa semester tiga yang memprogram mata kuliah English for Advertising. Pelatihan dan pameran ini diselenggarakan oleh 5 orang dosen prodi Bahasa Inggris Terapan D4 dan dilaksanakan selama 3 hari (Senin-Kamis, 24-26 Maret 2025) dan pada hari ke-4 (Kamis, 27 Maret 2025) dilaksanakan pameran sehari yang bertajuk “The Advertising Show BEC 2023” yang menampilkan karya-karya iklan mahasiswa. Peserta pelatihan dan pameran adalah mahasiswa semester 3, angkatan 2023 yang terdiri dari 2 kelas, yaitu kelas A dan B sebanyak total 60 mahasiswa. Metode pelatihan yang digunakan menggunakan metode ceramah, diskusi dan praktek. Dalam pameran tersebut menampilkan karya-karya copywriting mahasiswa dengan beragam jenis dan tema. Pameran tersebut dihadiri oleh civitas akademik dari kalangan dosen dan mahasiswa di lingkungan Fakultas Bahasa Sastra, Universitas Negeri Makassar. Pelatihan copywriting dan pameran iklan ini diadakan untuk memberikan motivasi dan mengembangkan bakat mahasiswa di bidang periklanan dan juga diharapkan memberikan pengalaman berharga mengenai penulisan copywriting sehingga kelak mereka dapat berkecimpung dalam dunia periklanan dengan bekerja sebagai copywriter di kantor-kantor periklanan maupun sebagai copywriter mandiri.

Abstract

Public speaking is a vital skill for students, particularly those majoring in English. However, many students still experience obstacles in terms of self-confidence and the courage to speak in public. This community service activity aims to improve public speaking skills through practice and feedback-based training. The training involved 25 students from various English study programs at Makassar State University with an experiential learning approach that included theory sessions, impromptu speech practice, and reflection. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in three main aspects: awareness of the importance of speaking skills, increased self-confidence, and courage to appear in public speaking. As many as 90% of participants stated that this training helped them be more prepared to speak in public. This activity shows that the practice and feedback approach is effective in building students' soft communication skills and is worthy of being integrated into self-development programs in higher education.
