Abstract

This research aims to analyze the causes of students’ misconceptions in addition and subtraction with unlikedenominators, along with their solutions, based on a fishbone diagram. This study was qualitative research with a collective case study design. The research subjects were students who experienced misconceptions in adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. The result of this research was caused by student misconceptions in addition to the subtraction of fractions, unlike denominators, which are classified based on six aspects in the fishbone diagram: man, machine, method, material, measurement, and environment. This causes errors in calculation operations involving numerators and denominators without equalizing fractions, the absence of visual aids for fractions that are unlike denominators, limited teacher mobility in teaching, and a non-conducive classroom atmosphere. Moreover, the language used in textbooks may not be relevant to students’ cognitive levels, and there may be subjectivity in teachers’ assessments of student answers. Peer tutors who provide incorrect explanations to their friends, the existence of certain friendship groups, and high-category students with low communication abilities. Understanding the causes of these misconceptions can be a reference for teachers to prevent misconceptions in students.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi karakteristik computational thinking (CT) yang dimiliki calon guru matematika pada materi pola bilangan ditinjau dari generalisasi yang dimilikinya. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan jenis studi kasus jamak. Subjek penelitian ini dikategorikan menjadi tiga jenis yaitu, (1) S1A adalah calon guru matematika yang dapat menemukan nilai dan , serta dapat menemukan bentuk pola umum ( yang melibatkan , (2) S2 adalah calon guru matematika yang dapat menemukan nilai dan , serta dapat menemukan pola umum ( sederhana tanpa melibatkan , dan (3) S3 adalah calon guru matematika yang dapat menemukan nilai dan , namun tidak dapat menemukan bentuk pola umum ( . Dua subjek dipilih dari setiap kategori melalui purposive sampling. Instrumen penelitian ini terdiri atas peneliti, tes tertulis berupa lembar tugas terkait computational thinking pada materi pola bilangan, pedoman wawancara semi-terstruktur, alat rekam audio, dan catatan peneliti. Teknik pengambilan data melalui purposive sampling. Teknik analisis data kualitatif yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah interaktif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa, Terdapat tiga jenis karakteristik CT calon guru matematika meliputi, (1) karakteristik CT S1 yaitu, memiliki generalisasi dekat dalam pemecahan masalah dan memiliki generalisasi simbolik dalam penentuan pola umum, (2) karakteristik CT S2 yaitu, memiliki generalisasi jauh dalam pemecahan masalah dan memiliki generalisasi simbolik dalam penentuan pola umum, serta (3) karakteristik CT S3 yaitu, memiliki generalisasi dekat dalam pemecahan masalah, kemudian dalam penemuan kesamaan dalam barisan bilangan, S3A memiliki generalisasi kontekstual dan S3B memiliki generalisasi faktual. Pemahaman terkait karakterisasi computational thinking calon guru matematika ditinjau dari generalisasi ini dapat digunakan calon guru maupun guru sebagai sumber rujukan dalam kegiatan pembelajaran.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the causal inference thinking of PPG PGSD students in solving mathematical problems. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study type. The subjects of this research were four pre-service PPG students from PGSD UM. The instruments for this research include researchers, indicator rubrics, validation sheets, researcher notes, mathematical problems, internet networks, laptops, and handphones. Research subjects as data sources produce data that is analyzed in the form of written answers and recorded interviews. The qualitative data analysis technique used in this research is the interactive model. The results of this research show that fast causal inference thinking is characterized by expressing familiarity with mathematical problem solving, expressing familiarity with accessing digital platforms to solve mathematical problems, accessing digital platforms with keywords, correlating the characteristics of information with specific digital platforms, and Accessing specific digital platforms spontaneously. Slow Causal Inference Thinking is characterized by accessing more than one digital platform to understand a piece of information and read the math problem text repeatedly. The digital platforms that the subjects considered to be a solution were the Google and YouTube platforms.

Abstract

Single-variable linear equations are open mathematical sentences that contain only one variable raised to the power of one and are connected by an equals sign (“=”). This topic is often perceived as challenging by students, highlighting the importance of exploring innovative teaching strategies. This study examines the implementation of modified algebra tile media to enhance student understanding of single-variable linear equations. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving a subject group consisting of student practitioners and 36 student observers. The research procedure included developing the modified algebra tile media followed by its application in teaching single-variable linear equations. Data were collected using the media, video recording devices, and field notes from the supervising lecturer. Interactive data analysis techniques revealed that the use of modified algebra tile media significantly facilitated students' comprehension of single-variable linear equations. By enabling hands-on manipulation of the media, students no longer needed to rely solely on abstract visualization of variables. These findings suggest that incorporating tangible, interactive teaching tools can effectively address learning difficulties in mathematics, particularly for abstract concepts.
