Abstract

Craftsman group of earth brick at Ballaparang sub village, Panyyangkalang village of Bajeng Subdistrict in the Gowa Regency has long been produced bricks mainly for the construction materials in the Makassar City and Gowa. However, some problems arisen by the craftsman such as brick quality produced is crack easily and the brick maturity during firing is difficult to control. To solve the problem, it was performed the counseling activity with the aims at increasing the brick quality through firing test with controlled temperature and time. The compressive strength test was conducted and compared to the brick produced by craftsman. In addition, mineralogical and chemical testing of raw material was performed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) methods respectively. Compressive strength test was carried out for both bricks produced by craftsman and brick fired in laboratory using Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) method. Testing results show that clay raw materials were composed of feldspar (plagioclase), quartz, illite, nacrite, and magnetite. Chemical testing exhibits that iron oxides (Fe2O3) is high so it is suggested to reduce the iron content in raw materials by using low-intensity magnetic separator. The implementation results of compressive strength produced by craftsman provide the average value of 3.03 MPa whereas brick fired in the laboratory give the minimum value of 5.09 Mpa which was achieved in 6 hour and 500oC firing. The contribution of this activity indicates the improvement of brick quality mainly compressive strength up to 59 %.

Abstract

When there is a population increase within an area, it will be coincided with housing needs. The demand of residential area sometimes requires land conversion from various previous uses such as rice fields, swamps, and other rain catchment areas. This shift in land functions causes several problems, such as flooding in the rainy season, drought in the dry season, and other environmental problems, including the increasing household waste. This community service is conducted to socialize the planning of infiltration wells in Biringkanaya District. Mainly, this community service aims to increase the community's awareness regarding perodical flood disasters and surface water shortages around the area. Besides that, this community service also aims to socialize the use of infiltration wells as an attempt to manage water around the activity location. Several steps have been taken in order to achieve those goals. Those steps are surveying field conditions, taking out questionnaires, and public disseminating to the community and other stakeholders. The field survey shows that the flood occurs because the discharge of runoff water that falls into the rain catchment area is much greater than the discharge of runoff that comes out. Based on the analysis, planning and designing infiltration wells are imperative to accumulate ground water. After the dissemination, the level of public understanding of surface water conditions and the function of infiltration wells is increasing. The community provides input regarding planning for infiltration wells that can be utilized to manage household waste.

Abstract

Minerals and rocks are knowledge that everyone who wants to work in the mining industry must know. This community service activity aims to improve the understanding and skills of students majoring in Mining Geology at SMK Techno-Terapan Makassar in describing the characteristics of minerals and rocks. The problems faced by partners are the lack of laboratory facilities and the dominance of theoretical learning so practicums are not optimal. This training involved 39 students who were guided by lecturers and students from the Department of Mining Engineering, at Hasanuddin University. The training method includes material presentation, rock description tutorials, and mineral identification using 18 igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock samples. Assessment is carried out through pre-test and posttest to measure participants' understanding. The results show an increase in the average score from 6.31 to 7.56, with a maximum score of 10, although not significant for some participants. Apart from providing increased understanding, this activity hands over rock samples to partners for further learning. In conclusion, this training is effective in improving students' practical skills related to minerals and rocks, which is an important provision for their future in the mining-geology field.
