Abstract

Preparation is one step for someone to be mentally feasible and skilful to join and be a part of an activity or a group. Likewise is for senior high school students proposing to go to higher education. One challenge for those prospective university students is the mastery of English - a scientific language. The study aims at assisting the prospective students, at the level of pre-intermediate English skills, ready to continue to higher education by providing an English reading and structure course. The participants are 14 final-level students of St. Paul Minor Seminary. One-group experiment design, with pre-posttest design, is used to perceive the effectiveness of the course. The findings show the improvement only on reading skills. However, the test-result discussion on the structure is held to observe the washback effect on the test performance. The test questions are taken from the English Proficiency Test of Musi Charitas Catholic University.

Abstract

Abstract: The distance learning during the pandemic has been assessed by many educational institutions. St. Paul Minor Seminary, like other schools, also has been challenged in carrying out learning while still prioritizing the quality. One of the policies taken is the diaspora seminarian program – the students live in their home parishes or pastoral units closest to their place of residence. During the diaspora program, seminarians still get adequate and sustainable learning materials and spiritual assistance. For the success of this program and through this program, students will receive assistance on self-management during distance learning and how to use google classroom media in the learning process in general and in English writing specifically. The program was carried out by lecturing, mentoring, and practicing. The instruments used were questionnaires and tests. Participants in the activity are 37 final class students held in July - September 2020. By the end, feedbacks from participants gave the emphasis that the 2 materials were accepted by students and the google classroom application in writing activities could run with smooth. This can be seen from the results of the questionnaire and the results of the participants' English writing tests.

Abstract

Ecology has long been a part of processes in current education. Hence it has become gentle evidence that the instillation of ecological values has been carried out extensively and thoroughly to students. One of the ecological promotion media is textbooks. This study aimed to analyze the ecological content of reading materials and instructions in the Skillful Reading and Writing book – a compulsory student book in the Critical Reading and Writing I course. Reading materials and instructions were on the analysis from the aspects developed by Rule and Atkinson (1994) namely appreciation of nature, realistic ecological problems, positive tone, appropriate illustrations, and hope for a solution. This study belongs to qualitative descriptive research with document study data collection techniques. The content analysis results revealed - at least - half of all readings in the book treat the natural environment. Of the five ecological aspects, they could be sorted according to the degree of conformity, namely positive tone (4.9), appreciation of nature (4.05), realistic ecological problems (4.15), appropriate illustrations (3.5), and hope for a solution (2.0). However, not all those selected readings are supplemented with learning instructions leading to real actions to preserve and appreciate environments. Therefore, teachers should make a purposively instructional adjustment to students’ conservation practices.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to design a TOEFL preparation program for the Rethorica Class of St. Paulus Minor Seminary Palembang, aimed at improving reading skills essential for post-high school education and English proficiency in today's disruptive era. The program, which lasted for 7 days, involved 27 seminarians and integrated lectures, exercises, tests, and discussions. It included pre- and post-tests to measure progress, along with a questionnaire to gather feedback. The reading skills targeted were main idea identification, text organization, direct and indirect question answering. Results showed a significant improvement, as evidenced by a higher score in the post-test compared to the pre-test. Inference statistics revealed a significance value of 0.005, indicating meaningful change. The questionnaire results confirmed that the program effectively supported TOEFL reading skills development. This study offers insights for improving TOEFL preparation programs in seminaries and similar institutions, emphasizing structured training methods to enhance reading skills and test-taking strategies. The originality of this research lies in its focus on seminarians and its empirical evidence of the positive impact of tailored, short-term TOEFL training on their English proficiency.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between maladaptive daydreaming and creative writing performance among students in the English Language Education Program at Musi Charitas Catholic University. Using a quantitative correlational method with total sampling, data were gathered through two questionnaires distributed to all students. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between daydreaming and creative writing, indicating that while daydreaming can inspire creativity and ideas, it may also hinder focus and academic performance. Students acknowledged daydreaming as a source of relaxation and creative thought, yet emphasized the need to manage it during lessons to remain productive. The study highlights the dual role of daydreaming both beneficial and disruptive in academic settings. It suggests that educators can harness its creative potential by incorporating structured writing tasks that align with students’ imaginative thinking. A balanced approach, combining creativity with focus, is essential for maximizing student engagement and well-being. This research offers unique insight into how maladaptive daydreaming influences English education students’ writing skills and provides practical considerations for integrating this phenomenon into classroom practice.
