Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether or not there was any significant difference in reading comprehension between the eighth grade students of Bina Jaya Junior High School Palembang who were taught by using K.W.L graphic organizer technique and those who were not. Seventy-two eighth graders were the sample of the study. The writers did an experimental method by using quasi-experimental design to the two groups of students. The VIII.3 class became the experimental group and the VIII.2 class was the control group. A reading comprehension test was an instrument to collect the data. The result found that the significant level was 0.000 < 0.05, so that (Ha) was accepted and (Ho) was rejected. So, there was a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension between the eighth grade students of Bina Jaya Junior High School Palembang who were taught by using KWL Graphic Organizer and those who were not.

The sample of this study was 36 students who were selected randomly by using cluster sampling. To collect the data, a written test was given to the sample. The results of the test were analyzed descriptively. The findings showed that the students made errors in changing nouns into adjectives with the suffixes ?-less?(58.3%), ?-ful? (66.6%), ?-able? (61.1%) and ?-y? (55.5%) and they made mistake with the suffixes ?-ly? (52.7%) of the incorrect answers. Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between students’ learning style preference and their speaking achievement. The data were collected by distributing questionnaire sheets and testing a speaking achievement test for 55 students. It used correlational study. There were two kinds of variables in this study, predictor and criterion variables. The predictor variable was students’ learning style preference (x), and the criterion variable was students’ speaking achievement (Y). The sample was divided into two groups; experimental and control group. There were 30 students for experimental group (VIII.6) and 25 students in a control group (VIII. 1). Pearson product moment coefficients correlation and regression analysis were used to find out whether or not there was a significant relationship between students’ learning styles preference toward speaking achievement of SMPN 12 Palembang. Only students’ learning style in the pre-test of the experimental group was significantly correlated to their speaking achievement. It was also supported by the regression analysis, learning style preference gave 19.4 % contribution to speaking achievement. The speaking test of post-experimental, pre-control, and post-control group was not correlated significantly to learning style preference. And contribution also vice versa. Those three scores from the speaking test did not contribute significantly to learning style preference.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out whether or not there was a significant diffrence of writing skill on explanation text through schoology application between students’ economy faculty of tridinanti University Palembang who were taught by using discovery learning model and those who were not. The data were colleted through written test about expalanation text in pretest and posttest. The population of this study was the third semester students’ economy faculty of Tridinanti university Palembang, Experimental group consisted of 28 students and control group consisted of 28 students. This study used quasi experimental method. In this study the writers chose two classes as the experimental group and control group. The data were analyzed by using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The result of the data analysis showed that the mean score post-test of experimental group was 67.10 and the mean score post-test of control group was 50.41. The result of paired sample t-test showed that the mean score of experimental group was 29.434 and 17.657 in control group. since the value of t-obtained was higher than the critical value of t-table. It showed that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accpeted. It means that there was was significant different of writing skill students’ economy faculty of Tridinanti University Palembang who are taugh by using discovery learning model and those who were not.

Abstract

Attitudes refer to the behavior of how people respond to their own language or are being taught. A qualitative research design with 27 students of Non-English Major at Private University. The collected data was questionnaire and in-depth interview. The data were analyzed using the percentage analysis and thematic analysis. The result indicates students’ attitudes towards L1, L2, L3, L4 etc. In opinion, L1 and L2 were still maintained and used in daily activities, whereas foreign languages such as L3 or L4 seem to get much more exposure through social media or formal domains. In the feeling aspect, the majority of students were excited to learn their languages that were implemented in the classroom due to challenging and fun. However, foreign language as their L3 or L4 was still distracted from learning in the classroom. In language use, L1 and L2 are used in the surrounding environment for communicating with their relatives, friends, and etc., L3 or L4 seems to be required for formal domain, social status and future career. Building on these results, techniques and strategies could be applied in the classroom and the parents could encourage their mother tongues to use in a certain place and keep on maintaining to encourage students’ attitudes.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out whether or not there was any correlation between students reading comprehension and students listening comprehension. The population was the tenth-grade students with the total 630 students from 14 classes at SMA N 10 Palembang. To the sample of this research, intake sampling technique was implemented. There were 90 students as a sample from class X.7 and X.8. The data were selected from students reading comprehension and students listening comprehension. In analysing the data, correlation analysis, regression analysis and normality test was used. Based on the statistical, it was found that the correlation coefficient or the R-value (0.000) with significant coefficient (p-value) was 0.422, which was higher than 0.05. It means that significant value (2-tailed) was higher than alpha value (0.422> 0.05). It could be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students' reading comprehension and listening skill. Since the Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.000, it indicated that there was correlation between students' reading.  Also, for the contribution of listening comprehension to reading comprehension it was only 17.8%. It means that listening comprehension has no influence to reading comprehension. In conclusion, the findings indicate that students who have high listening comprehension does mean that they will also have good reading comprehension. Also, reading comprehension can be used to help listening skills because listening is the ability to capture sounds, complete, speak, syntax, jargon, and obtain data.
