Abstract

This paper describes the rate of return to education in Indonesia. The purpose of this paper was to determine how the trend of return to education from 1993 to 2007. By using Mincer equation, we analyzed return to education in Indonesia with using Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) data collected in 1993, 1997, 2000, and 2007. Mincer specification linked between income and education. Income used in this paper was real income of a person who works. The estimation of the rate of return to education started by separating each year data. Then, it used pool data by adding year variable and multiplication variable between year and education. Estimation was also carried out by comparing between men and women. Further, estimation was divided into two age cohorts, young cohort and old cohort. All the results of estimation indicated a decreasing rate of return, the greatest decrease occurred on men with old cohort. Keywords: education, return to education, Mincer equation, trendJEL codes: I26, J30

Abstract

This paper examines the effectiveness of public versus private schools using the national exit exam of Junior Secondary Schools in Indonesia. Using Indonesian Family Live Survey (IFLS) (1997), IFLS (2000) and IFLS (2007), this study find evidence that graduates of the public school have higher scores on the national exit exam than those of the private school controlling a wide variety of students' characteristics and family background.  This finding is robust to several estimates, including Ordinary Least Square (OLS), Fixed Effects (FE), and Instrumental Variable (IV). Using the score of the national exit exam (Ebtanas) as a standard score, public school students are higher 0.30, 0.247 and 0.572 of standard deviations for OLS, FE and IV estimates respectively.

Abstract

West Java is the province in Indonesia with the highest population and has a location close to the capital. However, the condition of education in West Java is generally still low. This is estimated because there are imbalances between districts / cities. The research objective is to get a clear picture of the condition of education in West Java by using secondary data issued by the Central Statistics Agency. The research method uses descriptive analysis, with analysis tools of regional typology. The division of regional typologies from the two indicators produces four regional terms, namely developed regions, developed regions constrained, potential areas to develop, and disadvantaged areas. Based on the indicators of education quality and life expectancy in 2017, from 27 municipal districts in West Java there were 33.3% in developed regions, 18.52% in developed regions were constrained, 7.4% in potential developing regions, and 40.74 % in disadvantaged areas. Bandung and Bekasi regencies are included in developed regions. While the cities of Banjar and Tasikmalaya include potential developing regions. Regional division with three indicators, namely the average length of school, Location Quation, and life expectancy. This division produces three filled quadrants. Quadrant I has 29.6%, quadrant III has 18.5%, and the remaining 51.9% is in quadrant IV. The results of this regional typology show that there are imbalances in education and public health.

Abstract

Usia pernikahan dini memperlihatkan meningkatnya kecenderungan terjadinya perceraian.

Abstract

In this paper, we describe three things, (1) Evidence  of Beta-convergence’s existence in  Indonesian  districts-level data, (2) the reason of why Sigma-convergence may not accompany Beta-convergence, and (3) the demonstration to show that  Sigma-convergence cannot be detected at the districts  level across Indonesia using Indonesian  districts -level data that contains over 277 cross-sectional observations. If Indonesian individual provinces are considered separately, we find only 2 out of 25 provinces with detected Sigma-convergence. But also, in many cases statistically significant Sigma-divergence is found.
