Abstract

The elderly is a group that is vulnerable to nutritional and health problems, especially problems related to degenerative diseases. Currently, Indonesia and the whole world are experiencing a corona virus pandemic or covid_19. The elderly are the group most at risk for contracting COVID_19. The purpose of community service is to increase the knowledge of the elderly about balanced nutrition in the face of the Covid 19 pandemic. The method of community service in the form of education and counseling uses WhatsApp (WA) media for the elderly or elderly families. The target group is the elderly or elderly families who are in the Working Area of the Sapta Taruna Health Center Pekanbaru City. Telephone number/WA data for elderly or elderly families is needed to contact the elderly to participate as participants in educational and counseling activities. The material provided is balanced nutrition to increase body resistance in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Community service activities in the form of delivering material, health checks (blood pressure, measurement of height, weight and abdominal circumference) through meetings with the elderly then followed by education through Whatapps Group. The results of the pretest and posttest showed an increase in the knowledge of the elderly about balanced nutrition. This activity is expected to be a programmed and scheduled activity between the Health Centre and educational institutions and the next stage should be holding a meeting again with the health protocol by involving the elderly's family, so that the family can pass on information and education to the elderly.

Abstract

Based on the 2013 and 2018 Basic Health Research, there was an increase in the prevalence of overnutrition and obesity in Riau province from 3.1% to 11.6%. This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with the incidence of overweight/obesity in adolescent students of public high schools in Pekanbaru City in 2023. The type of research is quantitative analytic with a cross-sectional design. The research was conducted in May-June 2023. Samples were class X and XI students in three high schools in Pekanbaru City, namely SMAN 4, SMAN 6, and SMAN 12. Sampling was done by purposive sampling. Independent variables were gender, adolescent knowledge, parental education, parental occupation, pocket money, parental obesity status, physical activity, sleep quality, fast food consumption, and sugary drink consumption. The dependent variable was overweight/obesity. Data were analyzed univariately, bivariate, and multivariate. The results showed that the dominant variable associated with overweight/obesity was parental obesity status (OR=3.12; 95% CI: 1.25-7.83). Adolescents with obese parents were three times more likely to experience overweight/obesity compared to adolescents who did not have obese parents. Other associated variables were student knowledge (OR=2.62; 95% CI: 1.27-5.39) and sweet food habits (OR=2.34; 95% CI: 1.04-5.27). For this reason, schools are expected to work with the Health Office and Community Health Center to organize counseling or seminars on nutrition and obesity in adolescents; schools can provide healthy canteens by limiting the availability of fast food and sugary drinks.

Abstract

Daycare centres (TPA) play an essential role in supporting mothers in caring for their children, especially for working mothers. Daycare centres are one of the alternatives for mothers to replace their role in caring for their children while they are at work. However, TPA is often a place where the transmission of infectious diseases such as diarrhoea, respiratory infections, and other diseases occurs quickly due to close interaction between children. Therefore, preventing the transmission of infectious diseases in TPA is an important step to prevent stunting. In addition, monitoring of children's growth has yet to be done routinely in the TPA. The purpose of this community service is to increase knowledge for mothers and landfill managers in preventing transmission of infectious diseases and monitoring the growth of toddlers, as well as practical steps in maintaining the personal hygiene of children and the environment and the availability of educational media in the form of posters, leaflets and videos. The targets of the service are mothers of toddlers and landfill managers. The service method provides education, distributes hygiene tools, and provides educational media, namely posters, leaflets, and videos. The evaluation was carried out by distributing questionnaires before and after counselling. The service results showed increased knowledge of mothers of toddlers and landfill managers. The results of growth monitoring show that participating toddlers have good nutritional status and can practice hand washing properly. Although there are obstacles, such as the limited number of participants, this activity positively impacts increasing awareness about stunting prevention. The subsequent development is to expand the reach of education by involving more TPAs and introducing digital monitoring methods through applications to monitor children's growth. Support from relevant agencies is needed to ensure the sustainability of the programme.
