Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out how prospective mathematics teachers can visualize the form of fractional division operations based on mathematical literacy skills. This research includes qualitative research with descriptive methods. This study was conducted on 3 students of the 3rd semester mathematics education program with high, medium and low mathematical ability with good communication skills. Researchers gave three questions on literacy tests. The tests given include problems related to division of integers by fractions, division of fractional numbers by integers and division of fractional numbers by fractional numbers. From the test results obtained, interviews were conducted of all three subjects. The results showed that all three subjects were able to understand and translate the questions and formulate what was asked of the questions. However all three subjects encountered constraints when trying to visualize the form of division of fractions by fractional numbers. They just memorize division formulas like “multiplying and inverting”. From the results of the data analysis, it can be concluded that the literacy ability of the subject in visualizing the form of the division operation is still classified as low. Keywords :  Mathematical Literacy, Visualizing, Divison of Fraction.

Abstract

Speaking skills are essential for students in junior high school as they learn English as a second language. The ability to speak in English not only improves academic performance but also prepares students for future academic and professional endeavors. A supportive and deep learning environment and innovative teaching methodologies can help students overcome these obstacles and build confidence in their English ability over time, like an educational game. This research aims to determine the effect of student speaking skills in educational games such as guessing games. This research was conducted in one of the state junior high schools in Madiun. Two classes, namely control and experiment, consisting of 25 students, are compared. The control class is taught using an educational method, and the experimental class uses educational games called guessing games. The researcher used a random sampling technique and quantitative research to analyze the data with the t-test. The result of this research is that educational games' guessing games affect students who are taught with guessing games; the students who are taught with guessing games have a better score than those taught with conventional technique. The teacher should make an innovative learning process with guessing games to increase student speaking skills.

Abstract

The lack of understanding and skills in solving mathematical problems is now a significant concern in many countries. Other factors, such as learning interests, influence students' understanding of these concepts. Therefore, it is necessary to explore students' understanding of arithmetic (profit and loss) based on Bruner's theory regarding learning interest. The study was conducted at a Vocational School in East Java, Indonesia, with 26 students participating as research subjects. The research methodology used was qualitative, with data collected through questionnaires on learning interests, profit and loss concept tests, and interviews. Data were analyzed using a process of reduction, presentation, and conclusions. The findings revealed that subjects with high and medium learning interest categories can meet the stages of Bruner's theory (enactive, iconic, and symbolic). However, subjects with medium learning interests do not need help understanding what happens in the problem—the subject with low learning interest can only reach iconic and symbolic stages in Bruner's theory. Thus, teachers should design appropriate learning strategies and media for students with medium and low learning interests so that they have a good conceptual understanding.

Abstract

Student’s diversity and uniqueness should not be the reason for left-behind student in the learning process. Process, content, and product are the main elements of differentiated instruction that bridge the diversity issues in the classroom, including in the process of learning English as a foreign language in Taiwan. Differentiate instruction is believed as the fittest approach that can reach every single student’s profile, uniqueness, readiness, and schemata understanding which is understood as the element of reaching success in the English teaching and learning process. The approach then enhances students’ self-confidence and manages the structural thinking ideas through the variety of activities conducted during the class. The research method was used qualitatively involving English class observation of 22 students which was performed at one of the Junior High Schools in Eastern Taiwan. The research results provided wider information by preparing various media and activities, recognizing students’ competency levels, and activating students’ awareness of the teacher’s instructions.
