Abstract

The advancement of technology has brought remarkable changes in language education. The integration of Information and communications technology (ICT) into language classrooms is unavoidable. This research attempts to investigate the challenges of ESP teaching and explore how the use of ICT can help to address them. The social-semiotic perspective is used due to its relevance with ESP teaching. The authors employed a case study conducted in the Port and Shipping Management Department at a Maritime Polytechnic in Semarang, Indonesia. Data were collected by conducting an interview with an English teacher and having Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with a group of students. The result of this study indicates that teachers’ limited knowledge of social practices in the Port and Shipping Industry causes obstacles in selecting relevant teaching materials and activities. To address the challenges, teachers can use various sources, such as websites and video-sharing platforms which are rich with samples of authentic communication. To deal with authentic materials which have a high level of difficulty, teachers need strategies such as scaffolding and giving consistent feedback to students’ performance.

Abstract

Writing research articles is a 'tradition' conducted by students in every learning activity in higher education. This study aimed to analyze the use of grammatical cohesive devices found in the findings and discussion of research articles written by graduate students of English Education. Discourse analysis was employed as the research design and a descriptive qualitative approach was utilized to elaborate the analysis. Qualitative data in the form of text consisting of sentences and clauses containing cohesion were the primary data in this research. The data were obtained through observation and documentation by conducting a preliminary study, collecting the research articles, and verifying the data. The data were analyzed by identifying, classifying, describing, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study showed that the students employed all four types of grammatical cohesive devices in the findings and discussion of research articles. The most dominant grammatical cohesive device utilized by the students was reference and conjunction with total use of 2367 and 955 respectively. There was an apparent margin gap between the dominantly used devices and the least employed devices as there were only 5 occurrences of substitution and 12 occurrences of ellipsis. In conclusion, the students preferred to use only two types of grammatical cohesive devices while neglecting the utilization of the other types. Moreover, this study will hopefully provide suggestions for students on how to use grammatical cohesive devices and additional guides for teachers in teaching students on how to compose a well-organized research paper.

Abstract

Standard Marine Communication Phrase (SMCP) is compulsory to be used onboard vessels by all seafarers worldwide, and it has been mandatory by International Maritime Organization (IMO). This research employs a qualitative method, and collecting the data is done by SMCP documents analysis in the context of onboard and external communication, administering open-ended questionnaires, conducting interviews, and recording. From the study, the usage of SMCP for external & internal communication had different numbers. The utilization of SMCP for external communication is 9% optional, 26% for recommend, and 65% mandatory. Moreover, the usage of English in crew radio communication, especially for onboard communication, differs in number. 11% of respondents chose optionally, 41% chose recommended, and 48% chose mandatory. From the finding, it could be summarized that Standard Marine Communication Phrase (SMCP) was rarely used by Indonesian seafarers while working on the bridge. They were reluctant to use the language for some reasons; the crew being fully Indonesian seafarers, lacked awareness of the language and never had any reward or punishment for the one who obeyed/disobeyed the regulation. Besides, they had to memorize every word from the standardized phrases from the SMCP book. Therefore, using SMCP for internal and external onboard communication has become the most crucial priority to avoid accidents and incidents at sea.

Abstract

This study examines how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers at SMK Negeri 1 Pringapus design and implement creative teaching practices under the Emancipated Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka), utilizing Torrance's (1962) framework of creativity, which encompasses fluency, originality, elaboration, and flexibility. Employing a qualitative single-case study design, data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and analysis of lesson plans from three EFL teachers with varying backgrounds. Thematic analysis revealed that the Emancipated Curriculum provides significant space for teacher autonomy and creativity, particularly in differentiated instruction, integration of digital tools, and student-centered activities. However, the level of curriculum alignment and creativity varied among teachers, influenced by their pedagogical readiness and openness to innovation. Teachers who embraced differentiated strategies and technological tools demonstrated higher levels of creative fluency and flexibility, while others maintained conventional approaches with limited adaptation. These findings indicate that while the Emancipated Curriculum has the potential to foster innovation, effective implementation requires ongoing professional support. The study offers insights into the critical role of teacher agency and reflective practice in realizing meaningful curriculum transformation.
