Abstract

A study on the determination of paracetamol and salicylamide in a mixture by absorbance ratio method has been done. The absorption spectrum of both compounds crossing one each other at isoabsorption point. The maximum wavelength of paracetamol, salicylamide, and wavelength of isoabsorpsi line which show the relation of paracetamol fractions in a mixture containing paracetamol and salicylamide in various proportions and absorbances at isoabsorption wavelength was constructed. The measurement of absorbance was done at 247,2 nm and 300,3 nm. The experiment showed that the absorbancy ratio method can be used to determine paracetamol and salicilamyde. The percent recovery of paracetamol was 101,31 % with 0,642 % of standard deviation and coefficient of variation 0,616 %. The salicylamide content was then calculated and found to be 99,66 % with 0,863 % of standard deviation and 0,861 % of coefficient variation.

Abstract

Chili sauce sachet A, B and C containing synthetic red coloring agent  were taken from three fast food premises in Padang. Synthetic red coloring agent  were a food additives used by food manufacturers to enhance color of food products. The use of food coloring agent in Indonesia were regulated   in The Rule of Head of the Supervisory Food Board of the Republic of Indonesia Number 37 Year 2013 about the Limit Use of Food Coloring Agent. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) -densitometry was  a precision method for the analysis of food additives. Development and validation of TLC method for chromatographic separation used GF254 silica plate eluted with a mixture of ethanol: butanol: distilled water (4: 5: 5) and spots were detected visually. A red spots on the sample B was identified as Ponceau 4R with Rf value of 0.76. It was then followed by quantitative analysis using densitometry. The linearity of the method  was found in the range of 2-10μg/ml with a correlation coefficient of 0.994. Precision intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation was shown from 1.11% and 2.69% respectively. Accuracy of the method was shown on the percentage of recovery of the 3 different concentrations of solution which gave the average percentage of 108.17%. Limit of detection and limit quantitation was 0.8306μg/ml and 2.7687μg/ml.  The concentration of Ponceau 4R in the sample B was 11.9520mg/kg of material. This value was not exceeded the  maximum concentration of food coloring agent as stated in the rule which should not be above 70mg/kg of material.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 outbreak has changed how people live worldwide, making hand hygiene a must, whether it involves hand sanitizer (HS). The majority of HS are made of alcohol. Several side effects of alcohol are dryness and allergies. Alternative natural ingredients and HS are needed. Red betel (Piper crocatum) and white galangal (Alpinia galanga) are familiar and easy to be found. These two plants have the potential to be the composition of HS because of their compounds, such as antioxidants, antibiotics, antifungals, and antivirals. However, there is a need for further research on their formulation and effectiveness in germ-killing.Purpose: To formulate and identify the antibacterial activity of HS containing red betel and white galangal extract.Method:  This research was an in vitro laboratory experiment with several steps, including extraction, specific and nonspecific tests, formulation, and antibacterial activity tests. Results: Red betel and white galangal leaves had been extracted at a concentration of 10% and formulated into HS. The HS containing 10% red betel extract produced an inhibition zone of 0 mm against E. coli and 1.05 mm against S. aureus, and the HS containing 10% White galangal extract produced an inhibition zone of 1.47 mm against E. coli and 1.40 mm against S. aureus. Conclusion:  The formulation of HS containing 10% of white galangal extract is more effective than the HS containing 10% of Red betel extract.

Abstract

A Research of vitamin B1 in long beans (Vigna sinensis L.) analyzed using ultraviolet-visible (uv-vis) spectrophotometry has been carried out at a wavelength of 435.6 nm. Vitamin B1 reacted with bromthymol blue to form a yellow ion-associated complex in an ammonia-ammonium chloride as a buffer solution pH 7.6 which could be observed with a polyvinyl alcohol solubilizing agent. Long beans were boiled in water for 5, 10 and 15 minutes at 100oC. Vitamin B1 in long beans (Vigna sinensis L.) without boiling 0.0981 % ± 0.00021, boiling 5, 10 and 15 minutes were 0.0935 % ± 0.00015; 0.0834 % ± 0.00010 and 0.0743 % ± 0.00010 and the vitamin B1 in the long bean boiled water at 5, 10 and 15 minutes boiling were 0.00102 % ± 0.000004; 0.00110 % and 0.00117 % ± 0.00001. It’s can be concluded that boiling long beans (Vigna sinensis L.) can cause a decrease in vitamin B1 which decreases with increasing boiling time and vitamin B1 in the cooking water increase due to the nature of vitamin B1 which is easily soluble in water
