Abstract

Coral reefs are the most productive and diverse ecosystems. This study aims to determine the condition of coral reefs, using the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method. Data were collected in October 2018. The results of the study found 18 categories of benthic growth forms crossed by the transect line, where the biotic component was 63.02% and the abiotic component was 36.98%. The biotic component consists of 26.6% hard corals, 0.44% dead corals, 3.54% algae, and 32.44% other fauna while the abiotic component is only dominated by 36.98% sand. Coral cover of 26.6% shows the condition of coral reefs is in a fair condition. The cause of the low percentage of coral cover caused by human activity (anthropogenic impact). Keywords: Coral reef; Line Intercept Transect; Amahusu Village

Abstract

Tectonically, Eastern Indonesia is a complex technonic area because it is formed due to the confluence of three large plates, namely the Eurasian Plate in the west, the Indian-Australian to the south and the Pacific Plate in the east known as the Triple Junction. This is what causes the Maluku area and its surroundings to have a high vulnerability to earthquakes and tsunamis. The importance of disaster preparedness to reduce casualties is the basis of this socialization activity. The core activity of learning disaster mitigation is the process of protecting yourself from disasters before and during disasters. This socialization took place through the presentation of material in the form of PowerPoint presentations in class. The material presented included the definition of an earthquake, the characteristics of the earthquake, what to do if an earthquake occurs in school, signs of an earthquake, and how to save yourself in the form of a song video. Based on the results of the socialization, the students determined that the cause of many casualties was the lack of knowledge about disaster mitigation in schools and the local environment early on.

Abstract

The coral reef ecosystem in Amahusu village has been damaged, resulting in reduced production of fisheries and other animal products. This damage is continuously caused by natural and unnatural factors, so that it can disrupt the economy of fishing communities who depend on marine products for their daily lives. The purpose of this activity is to equip the Maluku Protestant Church Youth Troops (AMGPM) Nusaniwe sub- district, the basics of coral conservation through coral reef restoration activities. Coral transplantation is a method of restoring the condition of coral reefs to restore and restore the natural ecosystem of coral reefs. The methods include: introduction of coral transplantation, preparation and process of coral transplantation. The introduction of coral biota is the most basic thing that the public must know in order to understand the potential and role of corals in the coral reef ecosystem. In addition, the community is gradually being taught how to use the correct transplant method, hopefully in the future they will be independent and able to do it themselves. Coral transplantation is one method of coral reef restoration in Amahusu Village. This presentation is a deep understanding of the community that with significant assistance they are expected to be independent in protecting coral reefs.

Abstract

The waters of the Haruku Strait have very fluctuating water mass movements caused by various oceanographic factors, making the water column very dynamic. This study aims to study and analyze the physical oceanographic characteristics of the waters in the form of temperature and salinity distribution. Research data was taken and recorded by CTD on each transect then tabulated and analyzed using Microsoft Excel, Surfer and Ocean Data View (ODV). The results of data analysis showed that the temperature value at the observation station, from sea surface to a depth of 25 meters, ranged from 28.71–29.6 oC, while at a depth of 50–100 meters, the temperature ranged from 24.68–28.11 oC. The distribution of salinity values in sea surface waters to a depth of 25 m ranges from 33,12–33,60 psu while at a depth of 50–100 m the temperature ranges from 33,83–34,38 psu. The characteristics of the water mass are influenced by the mass of water from the Banda Sea and the Seram Sea, freshwater input from the mainland, and community activities on the coast. In general, the water column has a different temperature and salinity stratification for each depth. The temperature conditions will decrease, and the salinity value will increase with increasing depth.
