Abstract

This research aims at developing English for Specific Purposes (ESP) textbook to fulfil the students’ need toward the material at vocational high school using Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT). It was conducted to investigate (1) the quality of the existing course book used in vocational high school, (2) the development of the ESP textbook using TBLT in vocational high school in Pacitan, East Java. The research design used in this research is Research and Development (R&D) proposed by Borg and Gall. This study was oriented to the product development in the form of procedural model and was conducted in two main phases namely (1) exploration phase and (2) product development phase. The exploration phase revealed: (1) the description of the existing course book used in vocational high school and (2) the need analysis of the ESP learning material. While the product development phase explained; (1) the description of the draft of ESP textbook, (2) the result of the trial of the draft, and (3) the final draft of ESP textbook. The data in the exploration stage were collected through conducting document analysis, and having interview. It was carried out to reveal the quality of existing course book used at vocational high school and the learner’s need toward material. The findings show that the course book used at the vocational high school students contains general English material and it is less specific to be used for the students of culinary skill program. Hence, the findings imply the ESP textbook was needed to be developed by considering the need of the teacher and the students. The ESP textbook was developed by considering some aspects. It contains theoretical theories of ESP and TBLT. Then, it was validated and reviewed by some experts on English language teaching and implemented in class. Through conducting observation, distributing questionnaire, and having focus group discussion that involved the researcher, the teacher, the expert and the students, the draft was revised to be the final draft of ESP textbook. Therefore, after going through the stages, it could be said that the draft is feasible to be applied as supplementary material to teach students of culinary skills program in vocational high school.

Abstract

Teachers are considered to have an important role in transforming schools and classrooms. They have something to do with successful students learning. It is interesting to note that practically exposed to the same material, curriculum, students and environment, teachers conduct their teaching in various ways because English teachers have preconceived ideas or beliefs about the best approach in their teaching. This reflects the effectiveness of their practice. As multimodal text is necessary to be used in this digital era since text can appear in various forms and do not have to always be in writing consisting of rows of letters or characters. Teachers must have sufficient knowledge and understanding about it. Moreover, before the Covid-19 outbreak appeared in this world and affected all areas, especially education, teaching and learning process in the classroom was still focusing on the use of English textbooks that do not involve various kinds of mode. Therefore, the use of multimodal text is helpful to be used during the pandemic where the teaching and learning process has shifted to online learning. This case study aims to reveal a Senior High School English teacher’s belief about multimodal text in teaching reading. It also reveals how the teacher apply her beliefs in teaching practices. The findings suggest teacher’s personal beliefs about multimodal text and how the use of multimodal text which should be used in the classrooms.

Abstract

This present study hears voices of in-service airlines passenger handlers about conversations between them and passengers that occur in their work desks almost every day and their language problem. They will share their experience about conversations with passengers related to their job tasks or procedures, which are routine, and other non-procedural conversation topics which may occur several times. Data are gathered through in-depth interview with three in-service staffs from separated distinguished airports in Indonesia that already passed their first year working. This study reveals that in handling checking-in passengers the staffs need to be able to use English in order to demonstrate both procedural and non-procedural conversations. Dealing with their job, however, the staffs still find several language problems during the communication with English-speaking passengers which make them feel insecure. In this way, this article will present real report from in-service staffs that can be a valuable source for ESP teachers or practitioners, course developers, and researchers.

Abstract

[Understanding Teacher Written Corrective Feedback Practices in EFL Writing Classroom] Feedback is widely applied as the scaffolding learning techniques in the field of second and foreign language writing. This significance has also been recognised as a form of the students’ improving control over composing skills key element that is acknowledged as the process-based classroom. However, there is less published literature about how secondary teacher in EFL context responds to the students’ writing. Further, little is known about why teachers respond the writing in the ways they do, and the factors behind the current feedback practices. Therefore, this study addressee the tensions in the written corrective feedback type and strategy applied at a secondary school involving a teacher as its participant. It was designed as a case study aiming at (1) examining the actual feedback practice and its reason, (2) describing factors that shape teacher’s current practice in providing written corrective feedback. The data were gathered by document analysis and using interview adapted from Lee (2009) consisting of five items related to the actual practices in written corrective feedback type and strategy, followed by factors that shape those practices. The findings showed that teacher was favoured to use indirect, uncoded, hints and selective written corrective feedback. In addition, two factors were found taking the responsibility of those current practices.

Abstract

This study addresses a significant gap in current literature concerning the international teaching practicum experiences of Asian pre-service teachers specializing in English education. Focusing on three Indonesian pre-service teachers, the research explores their experiences during international practicum in the Czech Republic, Thailand, and Malaysia. Methodologically, the study employed in-depth semi-structured interviews, along with the analysis of narrative journals and artifacts from the International Teaching Practicum (ITP) program, following the thematic analysis approach by Braun and Clarke (2006). This involved meticulous examination of data, coding, and thematic classification to derive meaningful interpretations. Key findings highlight the challenges faced by participants, including language barriers and cultural adaptation. Despite these challenges, participants reported substantial growth in confidence and self-assurance, fostered by active participation in teaching and learning activities. Significantly, the practicum provided valuable insights into multicultural education, deepening the participants' understanding of different teaching methodologies, the role of teachers, and the nuances of local educational systems. The implications of this study are far-reaching, particularly in enhancing multicultural competence in teacher education. By shedding light on the under-researched area of international teaching practicum involving Asian contexts, the study contributes essential insights into the evolving landscape of global teacher education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of a sociocultural-based manipulative movement game model on the manipulative movement skills in children aged 5–6 years. A quasi-experimental design was employed, using a pretest-posttest control group approach. A total of 24 students were purposively selected with prior written consent from their parents or guardians. The experimental group (n = 12) consisted of students from TK Negeri 4 Yogyakarta, while the control group (n = 12) came from TK Negeri 11 Yogyakarta. The intervention involved a manipulative movement game model developed based on Vygotsky’s sociocultural perspective, integrating four elements of physical literacy from the Australian Physical Literacy Framework: manipulative movement skills, confidence, collaboration, and rule comprehension. Manipulative movement skills were assessed using the ball skills subdomain of the Test of Gross Motor Development–3 (TGMD-3). Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. The results revealed significant differences between the pretest and posttest groups (W = 56.949, p = 0.04384) and between the control and experimental groups in the posttest (W = 44.807, p = 0.0004301). These findings indicate that the developed model effectively enhances children's manipulative movement skills. The study underscores the importance of integrating the principles of mediated learning, scaffolding, and the zone of proximal development into early childhood physical-motor learning. The implementation of this model is recommended as an alternative approach to physical-motor learning in Indonesian kindergartens.
