Abstract

Deriving from many cases in a single parenting that effects the children’s physic and mental development directs this study to be worth-conducting. This study aimed at investigating the toddler’s physical and mental growth in a single parenting through qualitative approach. A narrative design was employed to reveal the untold story of a toddler in a single parenting through participatory observation. Then narrative analysis was applied based on these procedures: (1) observing the research object, (2) classifying the data, (3) interpreting data, and (4) (re)checking the data interpretation with the subject of research in order to search out verification (Creswell & Poth, 2018). Afterwards, the results were found that a toddler could meet his basic needs of life from a single parent through three aspects, such as child’s physical-biological education, child’s spiritual education, and child’s socio-cultural education. Thus, this study has emphasized the potential of toodler’s physic and mental attainment in context. Suggestions were then presented at the end of this article.

Abstract

Due to the closure of Schools and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), HEIs had shifted the teaching and learning method from face-to-face to Screen-based learning, such as the use of Learning Management System or Moodle, and other applications. Moreover, screen-based learning, such as the use of Learning Management System or Moodle, and other applications the EFL students’ writing argumentative essays barriers in online learning as well as their learning strategies as alternative solutions to cope with them. The research employed descriptive qualitative design. The participants were six EFL students from the fifth semester who experienced writing argumentative essays during pandemic. The instrument used to gather the data was depth interviews about the issue of research. After analysis, it exposed three barriers in writing argumentative essays made by the participants, namely unusualness on the implementation of e-learning for writing, low bandwidth while learning, and students’ discouragement on writing argumentative essays. To overcome the barriers, students must be given a brief simulation previously before attending the real-time class, making classification and analogy for the complex materials up to the simple one, and get a relaxation during the argumentations class. So, it becomes a crystal clear that teacher must assist students to be aware of their weaknesses in writing argumentative essay class so that they can be more creative in writing. Besides, students are expected to be able to solve their barriers by maintaining well communication among the teachers and classmates to sharpen their understanding and implement the best learning styles individually.

Abstract

Deriving from the postulation that learning strategies are shaped from a learning situation, which is inseparable from its socio-cultural context. A paradigm has shifted language learning strategies (LLSs) studies in the new perspective of situational-based research. Using a narrative approach, this study examined one female pre-service teacher of an English education major in occupying strategies to fulfill the learning needs. To meet with the data, semi-structured interviews were carried out for the participant through a series of interconnected questions. The results marked that the use of learning strategies varied in a distinct learning situation, including the strategies to achieve the learning goal as well as to encounter the obstacles in English learning. Thus, this study has emphasized the feasibility of LLSs in context. Suggestions were also presented at the end of this paper. HIGHLIGHTS: The use of strategies is varied in changing learning situation. The appropriate strategies assist students in fulfilling the English learning needs. The application of strategy training in EFL classroom is noteworthy because it is teachable.

Abstract

Anchored by the scant studies on Indonesian junior high school students’ orientation in learning English as a foreign language, this present study showcased how their learning orientation, delved into integrative and instrumental orientation models, was enacted. 144 students were recruited to answer an integrative and instrumental orientation 20-item questionnaire adapted from Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). Findings suggested that in terms of integrative orientation, the participants viewed learning English as a gateway to knowing and understanding native speakers’ cultural norms. This tenet was echoed by the global spread of English. In terms of instrumental orientation, the participants believed that learning English assisted them in career advancement. The results of this study concluded that the students, despite positively favored in learning English, leaned their English learning orientation on the native speakerism issue and the global spread of English.

Abstract

Abstract This action research focuses on how the integration of Students Team Achievement Divisions (STAD) and Authentic Materials (AMs) can improve students’ listening skill. The researchers believed that STAD and AMs help students to understand spoken English easily. Moreover, STAD allows the students to work cooperatively before they do the test individually, and AMs provide rich context materials. The research was conducted to the students of second semester English Department, University of Islam Malang and was carried out in two cycles. In the first cycle, only 46% of the students achieved the criteria of success, and in the second cycle, the result showed that the 71% of the students scored ≥75. Abstract

Penguasaan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris menjadi kebutuhan masyarakat, khususnya dalam pendidikan. Untuk mengukur kemahiran berbahasa Inggris diperlukan tes berstandar internasional yang disebut dengan Test of English Proficiency (TOEP) atau Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Oleh karena itu, pendampingan persiapan Tes TOEFL diperlukan sejak level sekolah menengah. Kegiatan yang dilaksanakan dalam pengabdian ini adalah memberikan pelatihan dan pendampingan persiapan Test of English Proficiency kepada siswa kelas IX yang dispesifikan pada pelatihan dan pembahasan strategi mudah mengerjakan TOEFL. Hasil dari tes TOEFL menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas siswa mendapatkan nilai di atas kriteria kelulusan minimal, dan dinyatakan lulus mengikuti tes TOEFL. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan 91% siswa yang mendapat nilai di atas 400, dengan rincian 27% siswa mendapatkan skor 400-450, 39% siswa mendapat skor 450-500, dan 25% siswa memperoleh skor di atas 500. Sedangkan hanya 9% atau 7 siswa saja yang mendapatkan skor di bawah 400. Kegiatan pendampingan persiapan Test of English Proficiency juga bisa dikembangkan pada persiapan jenis tes yang lain, seperti TOEIC maupun IELTS.

Abstract

This community service was proposed with the aim of improving foreign language skills, especially at TPQ Nurunnahdloh Madyopuro Village, Kedungkandang District, Malang City. They will receive innovative teaching techniques so that the English learning situation is more enjoyable because students are actively involved in learning. For example is that student’s do not just sit and take notes, but they use gestures and use digital books that are interactive and interesting for children, namely the Digital English Funbook. In addition, students will think and act faster in learning because the material taught by the teacher will be made interesting through Digital fun books. The method used in the training later is the provision of material and practice. The intended provision of material is that the service team provides material to TPQ children regarding English learning materials.
