Abstract

The trend of facilitating technological devices for students in the classroom still becomes controversial among teachers, whether these devices can be effectively applied or conversely. This study aims at revealing students’ collaboration effectiveness using smartphones. 528 teachers of primary and secondary schools in Sleman District, Indonesia involved as the respondents. Data collection used self-rated questionnaire indicating teachers’ perceptions and was analyzed by descriptive and factor analysis tests. The results confirmed that learning and discussion with peer, comfortableness with learning activity, dynamic learning atmosphere, mutual appreciation when giving feedback, mutual respect with peer, and collective usage encourages a good habit of learning descriptively engaged students’ collaboration effectiveness, whereas one factor, peer’s social relationships with teachers gain better showed its ineffectiveness. Further, the principal component sequentially adjudged the position of seven perceived factors with the Eigenvalue and the factorial analyses affirmed two rooted components with a total factor of 72.97%, where component 1 gained 67.16% and component 2 gained 5.81%. Using smartphones coherently need an exploration and an engagement through the social mechanism to support students’ learning activities.

Abstract

This study attempts at investigating students’ expletive motives revealing at their experiential life. 177 students majoring in English, Javanese, and Indonesian participated in this study. Data were collected from closed and opened questionnaires focusing on self-rated perception of Scherer and Sagarin’s (2006) ten swearing motives and Nicolau and Sukamto’s (2013) male and female attitudes toward expletive. Analyses used the descriptive and non-parametric statistics. Significant differences among four swearing motives were not found. But, the motive of acting cool indicated a significant difference (p=.000). The negative Z value (Z=-1.910) for anger expression, (Z=-.875) for peer pressure, (Z=-1.567) for tensions and frustrations relief, (Z=-3.607) for part of acting cool, and (Z=-.225) for society acceptance. The findings also indicated 10.2% females and .7% males confirmed bajingan as a wagon driver, whereas 70% females and 25% males stated it as an expletive. Males showed a predominant expletive more than females toward male and mixed gender. TV program was determined as the mostly influenced media. This expletive deals with intra-and inter-individual contexts deducing positive or negative reactions.

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating the influence of think-pair-share approach on the performance of ninth-grade students’ reading achievement. This classroom action research involved 35 public secondary school students in Pandowoharjo, Sleman, Special Region of Yogyakarta. They were selected by purposive sampling method. Data collection used the naturalistic observation technique and narrative reading text in the selected meetings. After a series of reading activity, a twenty-numbers multiple choice test was given to all respondents. Data were analyzed by using mixed analysis; self-reflective spiral model and descriptive statistics. Think-pair-share stimulated students’ participation and performance in reading, in which it increased the functional communication, discussion, decision taking, and conflict reduction in groups learning. The finding also showed that students’ mean of readed performance was 63,85 in the first cycle and increased to 66,00 in the second cycle. These cyclical outputs fulfill the minimal passing grade criteria. This research concludes that applying think-pair-share as a suitably alternative learning approach that helps the students develop their collaborative skills.

Abstract

Abstract: This study explores students’ performance in descriptive writing. Forty-five English Education sophomore students participated to be the respondents. The data were collected from students’ descriptive writing performance using a 5-Likert scale and they were quantitatively analyzed through the descriptive and factor analysis tests. Students’ descriptive writing were measured through the means of components of grammar, punctuation, coherence, cohesion, and content. Other substantial findings corresponded with the principal component analyses that determined the presence of 5 components with the eigenvalue outreaching 1, positioning 31%, 27.3%, 19.7%, 12.6%, and 9.4% of the variances accordingly. This referred to the factorial analysis that claimed 2 extracted components with a total of 58.32% of the variance. The component 1 was 31.00% and component 2 was 27.32%. The interpretation of these components is coherent with the pilot results on the descriptive writing performance scale, in which the component 1 shows the positive affect items and the component 2 partially indicates the negative affect items.  Keywords: Analytic scoring, descriptive writing, factor analysisPENINGKATAN MENULIS DESKRIPTIF MAHASISWA:  PENERAPAN ASESMEN PENSKORAN ANALITIK Abstrak: Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi capaian peningkatan mahasiswa dalam menulis esai deskriptif.
