Abstract

How mental illness is perceived by the members of a particular society will determine their treatment of those they regard as mentally ill. A primary factor which shapes the understanding of mental disorders and those who suffer from them are the social discourses that revolve around them as social objects. This study was conducted in order to understand the social representation of mental disorders among community members of Ciomas Subdistrict in Serang, Banten, and how the community as a social group views mental disorders and related physical restraints through social discourse. The dynamics of common understandings of mental disorder was investigated via the dialogical approach of Social Representation Theory, specifically by using the concept of themata. Themata is an underlying deep structure of meanings that provides a basis to the establishment of a social representation. Through a qualitative focused group discussion, participants were asked to convey and describe their understanding of mental disorders. Three underlying antinomies were identified, where each contributes to shaping a common understanding of mental disorders, namely [1] supernatural–natural, [2] inhuman–human, and [3] nature–nurture. These antinomies not only explain the underlying understanding of mental disorders but also serve as a ground in understanding various treatments for people with mental disorders in the community, including physical restraints.

Abstract

Data dianalisis dengan 2-way analysis of variance.

Abstract

The penetration of Hallyu culture in Indonesia is becoming increasingly widespread, as indicated by the growing popularity of K-pop, K-drama, K-movie, and K-variety shows. Hallyu culture can shift the perception of the ideal man in Indonesian society, especially among teenage girls. This study aims to compare the social representation of the ideal man between teenage girls who are fans of Hallyu and those who are not. Data collection was conducted in two stages: a questionnaire using the word association method to identify social representation attributes, and a questionnaire using the double denial technique, which was tested using chi-square goodness of fit ⅔ expected frequency to determine central core and peripheral attributes. The first stage involved 220 participants with an average age of 16 years (SD = 1.73), while the second stage involved 235 participants with an average age of 17 years (SD = 2.57).Overall, the results showed no difference in the social representation of the ideal man between the two groups, with nine central core attributes (i.e., well-behaved, intelligent and talented in various fields, affectionate to their partner, humorous, religious, committed to the relationship, caring for family, understanding, and able to control emotions) and two peripheral attributes (i.e., attractive appearance and financially stable).

Abstract

Crypto currency is a digital-based asset that functions as an investment instrument, a means of depositing money, and a medium for transfers through virtual networks. The rapid growth in the value of crypto currencies has increased interest among potential investors and attracted media attention to crypto currency investments. However, there is limited information whether the public is fully aware of the risks or dangers associated with investing in crypto currencies. This study aims to identify predictors of individuals’ intentions to invest in crypto currencies. The research utilized a quantitative approach with a correlational design and was analysed using multiple regression techniques. The characteristics of the participants were as follows: residents of the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek), aged 18 to 21 years, having heard of crypto currency investment methods, never having invested in crypto currencies, and not currently bearing the daily expenses of others. Participants were selected using a convenience sampling technique, resulting in a total of 159 respondents. The findings show that perception of risk and attitude do not significantly predict investment intentions. However, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control significantly predict individuals’ intentions to invest in crypto currencies. Among these, perceived behavioural control was found to be the strongest predictor of individuals’ intentions to invest in crypto currencies.
