Abstract

Background. One of the foreign languages that has always been studied in Indonesia is English. In fact, English is one of the subjects that must be tested during the national exam. Purpose. The purpose of the study explored students' motivation in learning English by administering questionnaires and conducting interviews. The respondents consisted of 33 participants. Method. Data was obtained by giving teacher performance scales, teacher digital literacy, and online learning implementation scales. Results. Interviews were given to some students and teachers. The study found that the majority of students had good integrative motivation in learning English. This is followed by instrumental motivation, which relates to their goals in learning English. However, students' good instrumental motivation also does not affect students' achievement or learning outcomes. Conclusion. This is due to external factors or the students' environment in their daily lives.

Abstract

This research is to find out how the use of cohesion and coherence in the story of "Layangan Putus", which was viral some time ago. Cohesion and coherence are important criteria and principles in a text. This research is expected to contribute to the development of the quality of story writing. So the story can be understood and useful for the readers. Thus, the purpose of writing stories can inspire readers. The method used to analyze cohesion and coherence was a descriptive analysis seen in each paragraph. The cohesion aspects analyzed were lexical and grammatical cohesion aspects. The results of this study indicated that the story of "Layangan Putus" had aspects of lexical cohesion, grammatical cohesion, and coherence. Aspects of cohesion and constructive coherence in which discourse can convey a message to readers. In this way, the contents of the story can make the reader into feeling what the writer feel.

Abstract

This research seeks to explore the function of language during the process of studying English within the classroom setting. The phenomenon of language in question is the occurrence of code switching and code mixing in classroom education. This kind of research is qualitative and descriptive. Data were collected from assertions that include code switching and code mixing during the English learning experience in the classroom. The intended conversation appears as a dialogue consisting of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that showcase elements of code switching and code mixing, along with the functions of code switching and code mixing. The source of data was derived from dialogues occurring between students and teachers in the classroom. The method employed for gathering data involved recording techniques. The analytical method for data was applied to all speech indicating the use of code switching and code mixing in conversations between teachers and students within the classroom, specifically by condensing data, presenting data, and making inferences. According to the results of the research, different forms of Code Switching and Code Mixing occur in the process of learning English, which the researcher has detailed in the discussion.

Abstract

This study aims to answer why some students are more successful than others in mastering a second language and why one person seems to learn faster than the other even though both are in the same situation. This research is qualitative descriptive. The researcher interviewed five English teacher to find out the difference in the ability of students to master the second language, from those who only attended formal learning at school and took part in informal learning outside of school. The question consists of five questions. Because second language acquisition (L2) is a very complex process, there is no model that captures all its aspects. The researcher summarized the results of interviews with five English teachers, because the results of the interviews were almost the same. Based on the results of the study, it shows that students who only attend formal learning at school are different from students who are also supported by informal learning outside of school. Like taking a course, and also helping parents. Students who only study the second language at school will be slower in the process of obtaining a second language.
