Abstract

The purpose of the study is to reconstruct the past of the VOC (Verenigde Oouts Indiche Compagnie) activities in Pontianak, West Kalimantan in the 16th century to the attempt to occupy the area for trade purposes and then the efforts of the Dutch East Indies government to legitimize its power in the early 18th century. this paper is to reconstruct the traces of the VOC, the Dutch East Indies trading company in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. The area which was originally under the rule of the first Sultan of Pontianak Syarif Abdurrahman who pioneered the initial settlement and trading activities with traders from the archipelago and the outside world is also highlighted in this research. Therefore, the problems that will be studied in this research are: 1) What were the conditions of the early life of the people of Pontianak before the arrival of the VOC? 2) What was the attitude of the local authorities and the community when they received the VOC in Pontianak? 3) What was the main purpose of the VOC occupying the Pontianak Territory? 4) How was the process of forming the administrative area of the Dutch East Indies in Pontianak? The method used in this writing is the historical method which consists of heuristics, verification, and interpretation stages to make a deeper analysis and interpretation of the data that has been criticized and then sorted to arrive at the last stage, namely Historiography. The results of the reconstruction of the VOC traces to efforts to legitimize the power of the Dutch East Indies government in Pontianak show that due to competition in the world of trade between various traders from the archipelago and China, England, India, Portugal, Spain in Pontianak resulted in occupation and colonization by the Dutch. In addition, the occupation of the Pontianak area by the Dutch was to dispel pirates who always made traders uncomfortable from the Malacca Strait, the West Coast of Borneo, the Sulu Islands, Mindanau to the Maluku islands.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) Learning Model, which emphasizes teamwork and individual accountability. Traditional teaching methods often fail to actively engage students in developing analytical and practical skills. The STAD model aims to enhance students' process skills and learning outcomes in science education. The research was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah Ambon with seventh-grade students from four classes. Two classes were randomly selected, with class VIIa as the experimental group (30 students) and another class as the control group (30 students). Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and multivariate analysis (MANOVA) with SPSS version 26.0. A quantitative experimental approach was employed, using a Pre-test, Post-test, and Non-equivalent Control Group design. Data collection focused on science process skills and learning outcomes. The results demonstrated a significant impact of the STAD model on improving learning outcomes and science process skills. There was a notable increase in average scores from pre-test to post-test in both experimental and control groups. MANOVA results (Pillai's Trace, Wilks' Lambda, Hotelling's Trace, and Roy's Largest Root) showed very high F-values, indicating significant differences between the groups in enhancing students' science process skills and learning achievements. The STAD model proved more effective than traditional methods, suggesting its integration into a collaboration-based curriculum. Effective implementation requires STAD-based teacher training, including team formation techniques, motivational strategies, and methods for assessing team performance. Adopting these recommendations can significantly boost student participation, teamwork skills, and overall learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research examines the role of the Ambonsche Studiefonds and Sarekat Ambon organizations in fostering nationalism among Maluku natives and in the struggle for Indonesian independence. Using the historical method, this research explores how the Ethical Policy introduced by the Dutch East Indies government influenced the emergence of pro-independence organizations and how they played a role in mobilizing resistance to colonialism. The Ethical Policy, motivated by the Dutch' debt of honor' towards its colonies, opened up access to education for natives and indirectly encouraged national consciousness. The results show that the Ambonsche Studiefonds played a role in expanding access to education for Maluku natives, thus increasing nationalist awareness among them. In addition, Sarekat Ambon became an essential forum for resistance after the transfer of its headquarters to Surabaya, which contributed to the struggle for Indonesian independence. This research also highlights the existence of the Malukan nationalist movement despite many of its members being victims of torture by the Japanese occupation army. Their loyalty and fighting spirit ultimately contributed to Indonesia's independence in 1945. Based on the findings in the heuristic process, this research emphasizes the importance of understanding and appreciating the role of Malukan nationalists in the history of Indonesia's independence struggle. It is hoped that the results of this research can inspire the younger generation to uphold the spirit of nationalism and national unity in facing contemporary challenges.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the responsibility of social scientists and their role in addressing issues related to the values of togetherness in cultural, ethnic, racial, and religious diversity, often referred to as multiculturalism. In Indonesia, multiculturalism is sometimes seen as a blessing but also, in narrow perspectives, as a calamity and a cause of destruction. However, multiculturalism in Indonesia as a product of local culture existed long before the formation of the Indonesian state. The data and information in this paper are derived from a desk review of various research reports, book studies, documents, and the author's own experiences conducting relevant research. The core issue discussed in this paper is how to ensure that local culture's multicultural products continue to serve as a guide for the communities that support them in Indonesia. Social scientists must be called upon by their social obligations as analysts and providers of information through their research findings and as spokespersons or prototypes of good behavior, morals, and actions within society. Furthermore, the paper highlights the role of social scientists as leaders of multiculturalism who are objective, open, and courageous in expressing truthful ideas, as truth functions not only as a way of thinking but also as a way of life. The conclusion of this paper indicates that a significant majority of social scientists in Indonesia consciously take responsibility for their academic contributions, which society can utilize, particularly in relation to multiculturalism in Indonesia.

Abstract

Since ancient times, the Malays have been known as a maritime community, predominantly inhabiting the western part of the Archipelago. Unbeknownst to many, they have played an active role in fostering social relations and building solidarity, contributing to forming a unified nation-state, with the Malay language serving as a vital symbol of this unity. This paper explores the role of the Malay language and Malay relations in building solidarity among the peoples of the Archipelago. To address these questions, the paper aims to (1) Explain the role of the Malay language as a cultural symbol that unites various tribes and nations within the Archipelago, (2) Discuss how Malay history and culture have strengthened national integration, and (3) Examine the consensus that legitimized Indonesian as the language of unity. The data and information in this paper are derived from a literature review of various research reports, book reviews, and documents to describe relevant theories and information from the past and present. These resources are then organized for analysis. The study results indicate that the relations among Malays in the Archipelago, particularly in trade and culture, have effectively built solidarity among tribes, ethnicities, and groups. This solidarity, primarily facilitated through the symbol of the Malay language, has had positive implications for forming a nation-state.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the population migration from Fafanlap to Yellu Island in South Misool District, Raja Ampat Regency, Southwest Papua Province. The research employs a qualitative method with data collection techniques, including observation, interviews, and documentation. This migration occurred around the 18th century during the reign of Sultan Nuku of Tidore. Driving factors for the migration included the less supportive environmental conditions in Fafanlap, such as the settlement pattern over water and crop damage by wild pigs. Additionally, the tax system imposed by the Tidore Sultanate added to the burden on the Fafanlap community. The main pull factor was the fertile and strategic natural conditions of Yellu Island, which was easier to monitor and manage. The research findings show that this migration significantly impacted various aspects of life in the Yellu community. In the social domain, there was an improvement in education and close interactions with neighbouring villages. Economically, the Yellu community experienced a diversification of livelihoods, including agriculture, fishing, and tourism. Yellu Island has become a tourist destination with homestays and other tourist facilities, helping to boost the local economy. Additionally, this migration strengthened the cultural identity of the Yellu community, preserving traditions and customs such as traditional rituals and communal work (mafabantuo). This study makes an essential contribution to understanding social dynamics and migration in the context of indigenous communities in Indonesia. The findings also offer valuable insights for further studies on population migration and resource management in remote areas.
