Abstract

The  objective  of  this  study  was  to  determine  the  correlation between  the   students‟  motivation  and   their   speaking  competence at grade 11 of Senior High School 4 Kendari. The design of this study was quantitative research and the population was all grade 11 students at Senior High School 4 Kendari with the total numbers of students was 620  students.  The  sample  of  this  study  was  class  XI  MIA  7  (36 students). The instrument of this study were questionnaire and students‟  speaking  score. The researcher collected the data by using questionnaire adapted from Sun (2009) as the data of students‟ motivation  and  final  speaking  score  to  get   data   about   students‟ speaking achievement. To analyze the data, the researcher used descriptive  statistic  to   view  the   students‟ speaking  achievement and their motivation based on five categories are; very low, low, medium, high, and very high. The   result of  this   study  showed  that  students‟ speaking achievement was mostly categorized in good criteria. It also showed that the students were highly motivated to learn speaking English by using video blog. The result of inferential statistics analysis showed that there was  a significant  correlation between students‟ motivation and their speaking achievement at grade 11 of Senior High School 4 Kendari. It was proved by the result of product moment correlation (rxy = 0.487), which was higher than r-table = 0.329.It means that motivation and achievement had a positive correlation.

Abstract

The purpose of conducting this research is to examine the effect of Spelling Bee game on students’ vocabulary achievement at the second year of SMP Negeri 17 Kendari. The sample of this research was 30 students in the second grade. This research was conducted in pre-experimental research design. Data of this research were collected by giving pre-test and post-test to the students. They were analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 version (descriptive analysis and inferential statistics). The result showed that there was effect of spelling bee game on the students’ vocabulary achievement. It can be seen from the mean score of post-test which was 62.67, while the mean score of pre-test was 43.67. In order to prove the hypothesis, the researcher took the conclusion by comparing the value of Sig (2 tailed) with the significance α value. It showed that the value of Sig (2 tailed) was 0.000 while the significance α value was 0.05. It means that the value of Sig (2 tailed) was lower than the significance α value (0.000 < 0.05) which indicated there was effect of spelling Bee Game on Students’ Vocabulary Achievement.

Abstract

This study aims to measure the correlation between vocabulary achievements and speaking achievement at second semester students of English study program in Halu Oleo University. The design of the study was research deign or correlational design; the type of the study was quantitative approach. The problem of the study was, is there any correlation between vocabulary achievement and speaking achievement at second semester students of English study program in Halu Oleo University? The population of this research was the second semester students of English Department in Halu Oleo University in the academic year of 2018/2019 with a total number of 120 students. It was divided into two class they are A and B. There are 105 students taken as sample in this study by using purposive sampling technique.  The instruments of this research are mid test score of vocabulary examination and basic speaking Examination. The result of calculation using SPSS 20 program found that, (r (105) = 0.459, p = 0.000) was also higher than r at 5% and 1% significant level. It could be concluded that alternative hypothesis (H1 table) stating that there is a significant positive correlation between vocabulary achievement and speaking achievement at second semester students of English Department in Halu Oleo University and null hypothesis rejected. Based on the research findings, it is shown that there is positive correlation between vocabulary achievement and speaking achievement at second semester students of English Department in Halu Oleo University. It means that students’ who had much vocabulary performed speaking better than the student who had lack of vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of conducting this research was to examine the effect of Inside-Outside Circle technique on students’ speaking ability at SMA Negeri 1 Kabangka. The population of this research was all the second grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kabangka which consisted of five classes while the sample of this research was the second grade science program two (XI IPA2) which consisted of 24 students. This research was conducted in pre-experimental research design. The data of this research were collected by giving pre-test and post-test to students. The data was analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 version (descriptive analysis and inferential statistics). Descriptive analysis was used to describe the maximum scores, minimum scores, mean score and standard deviation while the inferential statistic was used to examine the hypothesis. The result showed that there was an improvement of the students’ speaking ability. It can be seen from the mean score of post-test was 52.89, while the mean score of pre-test was 29.45. In order to prove the hypothesis, the researcher took the conclusion by comparing between the values of Sig (2 tailed) with the significance α value. It showed that the value of Sig (2 tailed) was 0.000 while the significance α value was 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the value of Sig (2 tailed) was lower than the significance α value (0.000 < 0.05). In other words, the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It was meant that Inside-Outside Circle had a significant effect on students’ speaking ability at SMA Negeri 1 Kabangka.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out whether there is a significanteffect of Total Physical Response (TPR) method on students’speaking achievement. The research question addressed was “isthere any significant effect of Total Physical Response (TPR) methodon students’ speaking achievement?” The design of study was quasiexperimental design by using two classes, namely experimentalclass and control class. This study involved the ninth gradestudents of SMPN 1 Kabawo who were registered in the academicyear 2017/2018. The instrument of the study was oral test wherethe students performed in front of the class orally about how tomake a glass of ice lemon in 3 minutes. The study usedindependent sample t- test to analyze the data. The result showedthat the students’ speaking score in experimental class (3.12) washigher than students’ speaking score in control class (2.23). Theresult of hypothesis testing revealed that the level of significant was0.00. It means that there was a significant difference on students’speaking achievement after being taught by using total physicalresponse.Keywords: Speaking, Teaching Speaking, Total Physical Response

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of using folktales on students’ listening achievement at the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kendari. This study applied a Pre-experimental research design with one group pretest and posttest. The population of this research was the eleventh- grade students of senior high school in the academic year 2018 /2019. The sample of this research was all eleventh-grade students of MAN I Kendari which consists of 30 students. The Technique of sampling used by the researcher was total sampling. The result showed there was a significant effect of using folktales on students’ listening achievement. It was proven based on descriptive analysis, the mean score of pretest was 48.4 and the posttest means score was 75.2. Moreover, the result of hypothesis testing showed that the mean value of pretest and posttest was 26.7 and the standard deviation was 20.7, while the standard error means was 3.78. The sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 which smaller than (<0.05), it can be concluded that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted which means there was an effect of using Folktales in teaching Listening at Eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kendari.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of using Scientifics Approach on Students’ vocabulary achievement at grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah Kendari. The research question of this study was “Is there any significant effect in using of Scientific Approach to increase the students’ vocabulary achievement at grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah Kendari?” The objective of the study was to find out data and information whether there is a significant effect in using of Scientific Approach to increase the students’ vocabulary achievement at grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah Kendari. The design of study was a pre-experimental design. The sample of this study was taken by using random sampling which consisted of 30 students. The instrument of this study was vocabulary test which consisted 40 items. The result of the study showed that there was a significant effect in teaching vocabulary through the use of Scientific Approach at grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah Kendari. The average of students’ vocabulary achievement before using Scientific Approach was 4.99 which is in low category. Meanwhile, the students’ vocabulary achievement after using Scientific Approach was 7.59 which is in high category. The result of hypothesis testing proves that t-test = 25.36 was higher than t-table = 2.04. This finding shows that in teaching vocabulary by using Scientific Approach improve students’ vocabulary achievement at grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah Kendari.

Abstract

This research was accomplished to find out whether Bahasa Inggris textbook for Grade X fulfilled each criterion of textbook evaluation criteria based on Jahangard’s theory. The researcher used the qualitative analysis design. The data source was collected from Bahasa Inggris textbook for Grade X published by Pusat Kurikulum dan Perbukuan, Balitbang, Kemendikbud. The instrument of this study was a table of textbook evaluation criteria. The researcher collected the data by using checklist to evaluate the textbook and analyze the data shown by the checklist and make some interpretations, and finally describing the results from the assessment table. The result confirmed that only five of fourteen sub-criteria which did not be fulfilled, they are vocabulary section consists of list of words and their definition, each chapter should consist of four skills, there is a grammar presentation in each chapter and the words are correctly spelled. While the rest nine of sub-criteria were fulfilled. It was recommended to the teacher to be more critical and could cover the weaknesses of the textbook by various teaching style or find another reference outside the textbook. Abstract

This research focused on the correlation between students’ learning styles and their listening achievement. The design was quantitative research. The research conducted in Halu Oleo University, English Department at academic year 2018/2019 that had passed Listening II to see their learning style and listening achievement. There were 76 students taken as samples. The data of the research were collected through a close-ended questionnaire adapted from Reid’s (1986) consisted of 30 statements and who had developed the perceptual learning style preference questionnaire to get the data of students’ learning style especially in listening II. To analyze the data, the researcher used descriptive statistics to find out the students’ listening achievement and their learning style based on the five categories; very good, good, moderate, low and failed. The researcher used the SPSS 16 program as the statistical program to analyze the data. The finding of the research showed that students’ listening achievement was mostly categorized as a good category and students were minor learning styles. Based on the discussion findings of this study that covered the score of students’ listening achievement and their learning style, the descriptive and inferential statistic analysis by using SPSS 16 program the researcher concluded that: Firstly, students the most preferred learning styles were Auditory Learning Style and Kinesthetic Learning Style. Secondly, based on the result above there were 2 learning style that correlate with listening achievement there were kinesthetic learning style showed that the coefficient correlate was -.317 and sig (2-tailed) was 0.038 ≤ 0.05 and group learning style showed that the coefficient correlates was -.0.366 and sig (2-tailed) was 0.01 ≤ 0.05. Also, the result of the correlation between students’ learning style and students' listening score showed that the coefficient correlation was -.349 and sig (2-tailed) was .022 it means that sig (2-tailed) ≤ 0.05 it means H1 was accepted so there was signifi couldt correlation. Meanwhile, coefficient correlates was negative correlate because the coefficient correlation was -.349. In addition, the researcher could conclude that there was a negative signifi couldt correlation between students’ learning style and their listening achievement of English Department Students at Halu Oleo University.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out challenges faced by English teachers in the remote area based on school-based management point of view. The method used in this research was qualitative method with phenomenological approach. It was conducted at SMP Negeri1 Wawonii Tenggara, SMP Negeri 2 Wawonii Tenggara, and SMP Negeri 2 Wawonii Tenggara. The total subjects of this research consisted of 3 English teachers who were not native resident of the study location. The data were collected by in-depth interview, observation, and documentation study. The data were analyzed by using modification of Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method in Creswell (1998). The data analysis indicated that challenges faced by English teachers based on two aspects of School-based management were as follows: (1) challenges faced by English teachers in remote area based on teachers’ role as a teacher/an educator, (2) challenges faced by English teachers in remote area based on teachers’ role in organizing school-based management. The result showed that there were some challenges that the teachers faced namely: inadequate school facilities, lack of parents’ motivation to their children, lack of students' competence, and overburdened with more duties and responsibilities. To overcome the teachers’ challenges were not only the teachers’ responsibility but also the components of school itself, including headmaster, administrator staff, society and students’ parents to realize their role in School-Based Management and work together with good coordination to get the purpose of implementing School-Based Management.
