Abstract

Mangroves are plants that live in muddy substrates, muddy sand, sand to tidal areas. These plants have important roles for marine organisms, carbon sequestration, as shoreline protectors from waves or erosion and sediment filters before entering the sea. The influence of human activity in the form of conversion of mangrove land to other forms or caused by natural disasters is a dangerous threat to the mangrove ecosystem. The magnitude of mangrove cover change is an important component so information is needed on changes in the spatial and temporal distribution of mangrove cover. This study aims to temporally analyze mangrove cover using high-resolution satellite imagery on the West Coast of Bangkalan Regency. This research uses secondary data in the form of Planetscope high-resolution satellite images from 2018 - 2023. The data will be processed to determine changes in mangrove area using Fv (Fractional Vegetation Cover). Calculation of the Fv (Fractional Vegetation Cover) value is done from the results of the minimum and maximum values of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). The results showed that there was a change in mangrove cover which was initially included in the FVC (Full Vegetation Coverage) class in 2022 with an area of 41.12 Ha to the HVC (High Vegetation Coverage) class with an area of 84.82 Ha in 2020. At the Arosbaya location, the highest Fv value occurred in 2019 with an area of 206.48 Ha. Reduction of mangrove area occurred in Sepulu and Arosbaya sub-districts due to land use change and sedimentation.

Abstract

The impact of climate change on coastal ecosystems has been a widely discussed topic in recent decades. The coastal ecosystem that is quite essential is mangroves. Community-based mangrove ecosystem management has actually been carried out in several places, but it is still not optimal. One of the obstacles is that the community cannot understand the spatial or spatial context of the mangrove ecosystem area. Therefore, we tried to carry out community service activities on Participatory Mapping of the mangrove ecosystem based on the local community in Martajasah Village, Bangkalan. The results of this activity are several zones or areas of the mangrove ecosystem determined by the community itself. Some of these zones include cultivation, conservation, and tourism zones. Each zone has its own role and function for the community. It is hoped that the results of this activity can be realized into a book on sustainable mangrove ecosystem management in Martajasah Village, Bangkalan Regency.

Abstract

Abstract

The Flores Sea is a central region of Indonesia that plays a crucial role in the circulation of water masses. This area serves as a key pathway for the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF), which transports water from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. The region is also known for its high productivity, particularly in fisheries. This study analyzes two important oceanographic parameters: Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Chlorophyll-a concentration. The analyses conducted include monthly averages and anomalies and their relationship with interannual phenomena such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). To quantify the relationship between oceanographic parameters and these phenomena, correlation and partial correlation analyses were performed. The results indicate that SST and Chlorophyll-a exhibit seasonal fluctuations, particularly in the northern Flores Sea near Sulawesi Island. These fluctuations are suspected to be caused by seasonal upwelling in the region, driven by the movement of the Southeast Monsoon winds during the East Monsoon season (June–August). Upwelling is concentrated in the northern part of the Flores Sea, along the southern coast of Sulawesi Island. The correlation and partial correlation analyses also show that ENSO and IOD significantly impact the variability of oceanographic parameters in the Flores Sea, with IOD exerting a stronger influence than ENSO.
