Abstract

Xanthones are one of the biggest classes of compounds in natural product chemistry. Xanthones have been isolated from pericarp mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) and then purified with VLC using calcium oxide (CaO) as the stationary phase and eluted using n-hexane: EtOAc of increasing polarity. Extraction of the pericarp mangosteen using the maceration method with acetone as the solvent. The isolation of xanthones was carried out through various chromatography techniques, such as vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC), gravitational column chromatography (GCC), and thin layer chromatography (TLC). The molecular structure of the compound was identified based on spectroscopy data, including IR, 1D NMR (1H and 13C), and 2D NMR (HSQC and HMBC). Based on the analysis of spectrum data, the isolated compound is ɑ-mangostin. The acetone extract and ɑ-mangostin were also examined for antibacterial activity against Gram positive (+) Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) ATCC 25923 and Gram negative (-) Escherichia coli (E. coli) ATCC 25922. The largest inhibition zone was shown by ɑ-mangostin against S. aureus (12.16 mm) more than E. coli (12 mm).

Abstract

A quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis of meisoindigo derivatives as a breast anticancer has been carried out. This study aimed to obtain the best QSAR model in order to design new meisoindigo based compounds with best anticancer activity. The semiempirical PM3 method was used for descriptor calculation. The best QSAR model was built using multilinear regression (MLR) with enter method. It was found that there were 19 new meisoindigo derivativeswith better predictive a potent anticancer agent. The best compound was (E)-2-(1-((3-ethylisoxazol-5-yl)methyl)-2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene)-N-(4-methoxyphenyl)acetamide with the value of IC505.31144 x10-15 (μM).

Abstract

The challenges faced by the Indonesian state are increasing greenhouse gases, climate change, and depleting fossil fuel reserves. This requires the exploration of alternative energy that is environmentally friendly and sustainable. Algae biomass, especially Ulva sp. is one of the resources that have the potential for bioethanol production as an alternative energy producer. The purpose of this study is to determine the potential of Ulva sp. as raw material for bioethanol and to determine the effect of particle size, solvent concentration, and power on the hydrolysis process. This study used Ulva sp. as raw material. hydrolyzed with HCl solvent using the microwave assisted hydrolysis method. Hydrolysis with HCl concentrations of 0.1 N, 1 N, 2 N, variations of microwave power 150 watts, 300 watts, 450 watts, and particle sizes of 60 mesh, 80 mesh, and 100 mesh. Measurement of reducing sugar levels was carried out using the dinitro salicylic acid (DNS) method. The results showed that the best conditions for hydrolysis were when the HCl concentration was 0.1 N, the microwave power was 450 watts, and the particle size was 80 mesh which resulted in a reducing sugar content of 20.751 mg/mL.

Abstract

Abstract

Benzophenone was synthesized through a condensation reaction of benzoic acid and phloroglucinol with an Eaton reagent as a catalyst. The percentage of the product was 60%, and it was characterized using FTIR and 1H-NMR. The sunscreen activity was carried out using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer to calculate the SPF value. The synthesis result was made in several concentration variations: 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 ppm to measure the SPF values. The results showed that the SPF values were 9.89, 13.39, 17.83, 23.77, and 28.26, respectively. Based on this, it can be concluded that these compounds have biological activity as sunscreen and samples of 200-300 ppm are included in the ultra-category as sunscreen.

Abstract

The methods for synthesizing hydroxyxanthone compounds are continually advancing. Among these, microwave-assisted organic synthesis (MAOS) has emerged as a particularly advantageous technique due to its reduced reaction times, improved yields, and enhanced selectivity. This study reports the efficient synthesis of 3,7 dihydroxyxanthone through the reaction of 2,5-dihydroxybenzoate and resorcinol, using Eaton’s reagent and zinc chloride (ZnCl2) as catalyst under MAOS conditions. The structures of the resulting compounds were analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR). The efficiency of the catalytic systems was evaluated based on the product yields. The Eaton reagent catalysis resulted in a 9.38% yield of a red solid, while the ZnCl2-catalyzed reaction produced a significantly higher yield of 23.07%, with the product appearing as an orange solid. These results demonstrate that Zn

Abstract

Graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) has a good potential to be developed as a drug carrier material. In this study, the interaction of GNP with one type of drug, namely 1,3,6-trihydroxyxanthone (THX), has been studied. The results of XRD analysis and FTIR uptake show an excellent interaction between THX and GNP through the π–π stacking channel. This interaction makes the GNP surface more polar and soluble in the aqueous media. THX-graphene shows physical and chemical stabilities, where THX can be released under specific and controlled conditions. The results of this study show the potential of utilizing graphene as a drug carrier material for more specific disease targets with a longer drug release time.
