Abstract

This study aims to reveal the variations of the lexical category of the style markers in a self-translation from English to Indonesian and their roles in expressing the perceptions of the self-translator. This is a pilot research with a qualitative approach. The data are obtained from the novel The Question of Red (TQOR) and its Indonesia translation, Amba. In this context, Laksmi Pamuntjak acts as both the ST writer and the TT producer (as a self-translator). TQOR and Amba use lexical style markers that are not exactly the same, involving variations. The variations of the lexical category of style markers can be classified into: marker reduction, attribute reduction, marker transposition, marker extension, and invariation of marker. This variations are the impacts of the use of various translation strategies, which in turn also change the perception of self-translator of the themes she wants to express.

Abstract

ABSTRACT. Abstract

One of the problems in foreign language learning is interference, a rearrangement of patterns resulting from the presence of foreign elements in the language domain (Weinreich, 2010). This research shows how and why phonemic interference of /s/ and /∫/ phonemes occur from Indonesian and English although both phonemes exist in all three languages. Some interference begins from lexeme and then to phonemic level. Other faults are overregularization which is the application of regular grammatical patterns to irregular cases. This seems to support the Logical Problem of Language Acquisition which states that a student cannot correct his/her mistakes without explicit feedback from the linguistic environment (Pinker, 2004).The results of this research indicate that foreign language learning requires knowledge of non-structural elements that are outside of the language, not only following phonological, syntactic, morphological, or lexical rules (structural elements). For example, students' foreign language knowledge and cultural content in teaching materials.

Abstract

This article focuses on how French cultural diplomacy efforts are carried out through language teaching and how France has pioneered modern cultural diplomacy through language learning institutions. Using the Critical Discourse Analysis approach by Fairclough (in Haryatmoko, 2016) and Vuving's Soft Power Currencies theory (2009), this study found various positive images regarding the French state, society and its cultural products in French, in foreign language teaching manuals. These images are constructed by visual elements and the selection of topics which implicitly become France's tools in implementing soft power through mostly the aspects of “brilliance” and “beauty” for the reader. These aspects reveal that the intention to implement them is to produce admiration; while benignity is mostly found in goodness, kindness and tolerance, which is an aspect rarely found in the methods. Keywords : Cultural Diplomacy, French, Language Learning, Soft Power Currencies

Abstract

Mots-clés : Accord Grammatical; Écriture Inclusive; Feminisation; France; MediaABSTRACT.  l’Écriture inclusive is a French writing form suggested by Haut Conseil d’Egalité (HCE) aimed at avoiding gender discrimination mainly felt by women due to the negative connotations of feminine job titles as well as the concept of le masculin l’emporte sur le féminin (the masculine dominates feminine) in French grammar. Gender discrimination has sparked debates since Hatier, a publisher of primary school textbooks who decided to apply l’écriture inclusive in its textbook (2017). In the debates, media involvement in shaping public opinion on this issue was seen. This study aims to determine the position of French media towards the l’écriture inclusive phenomenon through the writings and rhetoric in the articles they have published. Using qualitative methods, the study is conducted based on Grevisse's morphological theory and present HCE rules of l’écriture inclusive. The results show that the use of l’écriture inclusive in the media was not a form of political orientation impact, rather the contrarian media characteristic. The partial application of l’écriture inclusive shows that media still prioritize communicative elements for ease of information transmission to readers. In addition, the absence of l’écriture inclusive in the headlines makes searches of articles through web search engines easier. Keywords : Accord Grammatical; Inclusive Writing; Feminization; France; Online News

Abstract

Abstract

This research discusses the metaphorical elements contained in the song lyrics of Celine Dion's album D'Eux. From this study, it was found that there are 26 verses from 3 songs, titled "Pour que tu m'aimes encore", "J'irai où tu iras", and "Je sais pas", which contain metaphors. The analysis in this study uses the component theory of meaning from Mortureux (1997) and the theory of metaphors from Camp (2003). The results showed that the songs in this album all have the thematic characteristics of love, but with different depictions of it. The producer’s aim in making this album was to dedicate and show the singer’s love and gratitude for her life. The dominant metaphor function used in lyrics is to provide a clear picture of the true meaning. The love metaphor in the song “Pour que tu m'aimes encore” tells of the loss of a partner, “J'irai où tu iras” about the husband she admires, and “Je sais pas” describes her dependence on her husband. We have found that the lyrics in the three songs are proven to have metaphorical elements of love and form the identity of each song. Each song has a different meaning of love, but has one thing that is highlighted in common, namely the effort to fight for love.

Abstract

Literary translation are often faced with problems of equivalence, faithfulness, accuracy, and naturalness. This becomes more complex because the author can choose between many options. Therefore, the author’s choice of style has roles in representing his ideology. This study discusses literary translation by the author herself. This study aims at explaining whether the case of self-translation of the novel The Question of Red (TQOR) and Amba experienced distinction in the lexical category of style markers which led to a potential difference in the self-translator's ideology. A qualitative research method with Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach was used to reveal the ideological representation. The data sources are an English novel, TQOR, and its Indonesian translation, Amba. The research data are nouns in source text and their translation which represent the self-translator’s ideology. The analysis followed Fairclough’s model of description, interpretation, and explanation. The results show that the ST has more nouns as the lexical style markers than the TT. In both texts, abstract nouns are used more frequently than concrete nouns which offers more affective involvement so that the readers of both texts can feel the experience of the characters rather than giving sensory perceptions to the readers.

Abstract

Gilets Jaunes massive protest in France was considered as the most serious crisis in the Fifth Republic since the protest of May 1968. The importance of the event was such that it generated serious controversy, which was widely reported and many French media competed to highlight the development of the action group. This study examines the headlines of the Gilets Jaunes phenomenon in two online news sites (LeFigaro.fr and Libération.fr) with a different ideology. The analysis was carried out using theories of Le Querler's syntactic structure, Nida's meaning componential analysis, Dor & Gattani's headline functionality, and Entman's media framing. The results show that left-wing media news titles framed Gilets Jaunes as evidence of the people's struggle, while the right-wing media framed Gilets Jaunes as an action that only caused riots and casualties.
