Abstract

Permana, Dio R. 2015. Teaching Strategies Applied by PPL Teachers in Teaching Reading Comprehension. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Language and Art Department. Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. University Bengkulu. The research desribed the strategies applied by PPL teachers in teaching reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 5, SMA Negeri 1, and SMA Negeri 8 kota Bengkulu. This was a descriptive research. The subjects of this research were six PPL teachers who were divided into three different schools. The data were collected by using observation checklist and field notes. The data from observation checklist were identified, classified, and analyzed by using table of analysis. The field notes were included into the table of analysis. The result shows that the strategies applied by PPL teachers in pre-reading were introducing a topic, activating background knowledge, predicting, sharing existing knowledge, sequencing illustration, and set a purpose reading. In while-reading phase, there were reading aloud, skimming, scanning, rereading, and taking note. In post-reading phase, the strategies used by PPL teachers were summarizing, thinking critically, comprehension question, identifying the author’s purpose, examining grammatical structure, and follow-up writing exercise. In conclusion, there were sixteen strategies out of seventeen strategies applied by PPL teachers in teaching reading comprehension.

Abstract

It has been still debatable whether someone acquire second language acquistion similar to first language or not especially in field of input. Input is one of the most important elements in the process of second language acqusition. Without input, learning second language cannot take place. In this paper, two hypotheses of input processing have been described based on Krashen’s input hypothesis and Long’s interaction hypothesis in order to see its influence in second language acquisition.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating how far teachers and students really understand the existence of character education in the curriculum, especially through the teaching and learning process in the classroom by using English textbooks as a medium. There were six teachers and six students who participated in this research. A semi-structured interview with a one-on-one interview was conducted in order to see the perspective of teachers and students about character education in their textbooks.  The study revealed that both teachers’ and students’ agreed that character education is essential in creating good individuals with noble characters to tackle moral degradation. Their understanding of character education in the textbooks they were using now was satisfactory. It can be seen through both teachers and students were aware of dealing with character values in the textbooks that embedded in the teaching and learning materials which can be presented both in form of implicit and explicit but they did not know about 18 character values proposed by the government yet.

Abstract

Slang is a language that is often used in society. The use of this variety of languages shows that there is a fairly good closeness between the speakers in communication. In this research, it is expected to find out how the description of the use of language, especially the existence of Slang. This study applied the Content Analysis technique. The qualitative descriptive approach is used as the research methodology in this study. This is due to the fact that the researcher analyzed the data descriptively and the conclusion was offered in the form of an explanation of words. From the study, it found that the translator tent to use equivalent words that have similarities in meaning between ST and TT, so it guides the audience easily understood the meaning of Slang words. The translator also tends to use ‘softened word’ in TT in order to avoid the vulgarity and rudeness of ST. In contrast, it also found that the translator did some mistakes in translating slang from ST. This mistake can be avoided by the translator by knowing the cultural background of the slang word first, then looking for relevancy between utterance and context, and last the translator need to pick up the equivalent word in TT that has a similar meaning to the slang word in ST.

Abstract

Perkembangan kemajuan teknologi digital pada kehidupan masyarakat adalah suatu keniscayaan. Oleh karena itu perlu dilakukan peningkatan kemampuan masyarakat khususnya ibu-ibu dalam menggunakan media digital tak terkecuali pada penggunaan media sosial. Tim pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat Universitas IGM melaksanakan pengabdian di Kecamatan Rambutan dengan cara memberikan materi penyuluhan secara interaktif. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini meningkatkan pemahaman kepada ibu-ibu di Kecamaan rambutan untuk menerapkan empat pilar literasi digital dalam menggunakan media digital pada kehidupan mereka. Sebagaimana diketahui bahwa setiap hari banyak informasi yang masuk pada media digital khususnya sosial media, namun tiak semua informasi itu baik untuk diterima oleh masyarakat. Oleh karena itu untuk mengantisipasi informasi- informasi yang negative itu diperlukan panduan pengetahuan literasi digital. Selain itu untuk mengantisipasi dan mengurangi kasus-kasus hukum yang berkaitan dengan penyalahgunaan media sosial, dan budaya-budaya dalam menggunakan media-media digital saat ini perlu disampaikan. Temuan dilapangan masih ada masyarakat yang belum mengenal rambu-rambu dalam menggunakan media digital sehingga kurang memanfaatkan media digital untuk hal-hal yang positif, seperti mencari informasi cara mendidik anak yang baik. Dengan adanya kegiatan ini diharapkan pengetahuan ibu-ibu meningkat dan dapat menerapkannya dalam kehidupan sehari-hari.

Abstract

Dinas pendidikan Kota Palembang membuat pelatihan penulisan karya ilmiah bagi guru yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis para guru dalam menghasilkan karya ilmiah yang berkualitas dan bermanfaat bagi dunia pendidikan. Pelatihan tersebut meliputi berbagai aspek penulisan karya ilmiah, seperti pemilihan topik penelitian, perumusan masalah penelitian, pengumpulan dan analisis data, serta penyusunan laporan penelitian. Metode dalam pelatihan ini meliputi Identifikasi Tujuan, Persiapan Materi, Penentuan Jadwal dan Durasi, Pemilihan Peserta, Sesi Praktikum, Umpan Balik dan Evaluasi. Dari survey sebelum pelatihan Peserta kesulitan dalam menyusun desain penelitian yang sesuai dan memilih metode analisis yang tepat. Peserta seringkali tidak yakin bagaimana menganalisis data dan menginterpretasikan hasilnya. Peserta seringkali mengalami kesulitan dalam menyusun kesimpulan yang logis dan rekomendasi yang relevan. Sedangkan hasil survey setelah pelatihan yaitu peserta menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman yang signifikan mengenai struktur dan tujuan karya ilmiah. Peserta dapat menyajikan latar belakang penelitian dengan lebih jelas dan koheren setelah pelatihan. Peserta menunjukkan peningkatan kemampuan dalam menyusun desain penelitian dan memilih metode analisis yang tepat. Peserta lebih percaya diri dalam menganalisis data dan menginterpretasikan hasil setelah mengikuti pelatihan.

Abstract

Dalam upaya meningkatkan motivasi dan rasa percaya diri anak-anak dalam berbahasa Inggris, strategi belajar menggunakan Game ini dapat membantu anak-anak dalam belajar berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan mudah. Tujuan utama dari kegiatan pelatihan ini adalah untuk membantu anak-anak agar termotivasi untuk belajar bahasa Inggris dengan cara yang sederhana namun efektif. Pelatihan dilaksanakan sebanyak 8 pertemuan dan terdapat 10 orang sample dalam kegiatan ini. Pengunaan Test menjadi instrumen utama dalam mengukur tingkat keberhasilan dari kegiatan ini. Adapun komponen test yang diukur adalah cara pengucapan yang benar, artikulasi yang baik dan intonasi yang tepat. Hasil menunjukan bahwa penggunaan media Game dalam belajar bahasa Inggris menunjukan peningkatan angka yang signifikan dan peserta kegiatan mampu berbicara dan menggunakan bahasa Inggris dengan baik dan benar.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the learning system at Indo Global Mandiri University from offline to online learning. Online learning is a type of education that is provided electronically via the internet or other computer-based technologies. It is also known as e-learning, remote education, or virtual learning. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, colleges have conducted online learning during the previous three years. This study aimed to investigate the students' perceptions of online learning and the relationship between the students' perceptions of online learning and their reading comprehension achievement among English education students at Indo Global Mandiri University. The quantitative method used in this research was a correlational design to analyze the data. The population for this study were 121 English Language Education students. The data collection was done through a questionnaire of perception and reading comprehension test. This study showed that the perception of students was in the low category with a percentage of 38%, which means that the perception of English Education students at Indo Global Mandiri University was negative. While the results of the reading test of English education students were included in the advanced category with a percentage of 50%. It indicated that students' reading achievement was not much influenced by their perception of online learning.

Abstract

Attitude is currently receiving a lot of attention in learning foreign languages because attitude toward language learning is considered the key factor for people to learn a language. In other words, one part that can indicate the success or failure of learning a foreign language is their attitude toward the language. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and two research instruments, namely closed questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with the research objectives to reveal the attitudes of students of the English education study program at Indo Global Mandiri University toward English language learning and the attitudes of students of the study program English education at Indo Global Mandiri University in each semester. Research participants for the questionnaire were 121 students and 8 students were interviewed. The findings from the questionnaire data analysis revealed that students of the English education study program at Indo Global Mandiri University had a positive attitude toward English language learning and the findings from the interview discovered that students of the English education study program at Indo Global Mandiri University also had a positive attitude in each semester.

Abstract

This study was designed to know the significant improvement after using busuu application for listening comprehension achievement. It aimed at finding out how applying busuu application could be used to see significant improvement and significant mean difference between the students use busuu application and who did not use busuu application in first graders listening comprehension achievement at SMPN 3 Palembang. This research consisted of two variables, i.e. independent variable (busuu application) and dependent variable (listening comprehension achievement). The research was quantitative method quasi-experimental design. In this study, researcher used especially experimental group and control group. The sample of this research could be 66 students at first graders of SMPN 3 Palembang. After calculating data, the researcher concluded that students' listening can be improve both before and after using the busuu application. The mean results of the pupils' pre-test and post-tests serve as evidence for this. The result showed that there was significant mean difference on students’ listening comprehension because the t-obtained was higher than t-table = (3,966 > 1,997) with sig. (2-tailed) < 0.05 = .000 < 0.05. Which means that the null hypotheses (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypotheses (Ha) was accepted. Moreover, the listening comprehension was significantly improved in the experimental group. The researcher concluded that there was any significant improvement and significant mean difference in the students listening comprehension achievement at SMPN 03 Palembang after being taught using busuu application.
