Abstract

ABSTRACT: The use of herbal preparations to improve fertility were empirically beneficial for reproductive health, however its use needs to be supported by scientific evidence. In this study we observed the effects of herbal preparations on haematological parameters, liver function and kidney function of female rats. The estrus cycle of the experimental female rats were previously synchronized by injection with prostaglandin twice in two days interval. The rats were randomly assigned into eight groups i.e., two negative control groups, two positive control groups (injected with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin with effective and double of effective doses), two groups were given herbal preparation A (with effective and double of effective doses), and two groups were given herbal preparation B (with effective and double of effective doses). The treatments were given for 3 consecutive estrous cycles. Parameters measured were hematological parameters (erythrocyte, leukocyte, and hemoglobin), liver functions (SGOT and SGPT concentrations), and renal function (serum ureum concentration). The results showed that the administration of herbal preparation for fertility improved erythrocyte, leukocyte, and hemoglobin parameters, improved liver functions, and optimized renal functions. It was concluded that the administration of herbal preparation for fertility for 3 consecutive estrous cycles did not disturb physiological functions, instead its improved hematological parameters as well as liver and renal functions. Keywords: hematological, herbal, liver function, renal function, female rats  ABSTRAK: Penggunaan jamu kesuburan secara empiris bermanfaat untuk kesehatan reproduksi, namun penggunaannya perlu didukung oleh data ilmiah. Abstract

Fitness becomes an important benchmark for public health in every age group. Activities with poor adverse fitness are at risk of injury. Good fitness is gained from a balance in everyday physical activity with conditions that are free of metabolic syndrome. This study investigated the relationship of physical activity, energy balance, and metabolic syndrome to the fitness of 166 professors of Universitas Padjadjaran who underwent a 1-month fitness checkup at BAPELKES Bandung in the period of 2017. Based on the regression analysis, the results showed a significant relationship between physical activity, energy balance, and metabolic syndrome on the physical fitness of the elderly group (F = 25.9290> F table = 2.427) with normal data distribution (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test). The results also showed a moderate relationship (R = 0.569 and R2 = 0.324). It also partially showed significant influence between physical activity and fitness (t = 8.541> t table = 1.975), significant influence between energy balance and physical fitness (t = 2.248> t table = 1.975), and no significant partial influence between metabolic syndrome and physical fitness of the elderly group (t = -0.029 <t table = 1.975). Hence, there is a relationship between physical activity, energy balance, metabolic syndrome and physical fitness  of Professors in Universitas Padjadjaran.Key words: Energy balance, metabolic syndrome, physical fitness  Hubungan Aktivitas Fisik, Keseimbangan Energi, dan Sindrom Metabolik terhadap Kebugaran Fisik pada Kelompok Usia LanjutKebugaran menjadi tolak ukur penting bagi kesehatan masyarakat pada setiap kelompok usia. Abstract

Abstract

Background: No drug with a liver antifibrotic effect for treating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been approved. Physalis angulata Linn., better known to Indonesian as ciplukan, has natural abilities in various metabolic and inflammatory diseases. This study aims to determine the effect of ethyl acetate fraction of P. angulata in the NAFLD rat model by examining alanine aminotransferase (ALT), cholesterol levels, and liver histopathological features, which are methods to evaluate the course of the disease and the potential antifibrotic effect.Method: This research is an in vivo study on male Wistar rats conducted at the Animal Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran, from September to November 2020. Rats were grouped randomly into seven groups of 5 each. The NAFLD models were created by giving a diet containing 20% margarine for four weeks. The intervention groups were given vitamin E, ethyl acetate fraction of P. angulata, and both combinations. The statistical analysis examined differences in each group based on their histopathological features, ALT, and cholesterol levels. Results: Histopathological results in the group given P. angulata at a dose of 0.32 mg resembled normal liver, and the ALT level was similar to vitamin E. The administration of P. angulata at 0.16 mg dose improved cholesterol levels. Conclusions: P. angulata ethyl acetate fraction at a dose of 0.32 mg improved the histopathological and serum ALT levels in the NAFLD rat model, which could be the basis for the mechanism of P. angulata's antifibrotic ability in NAFLD conditions.

Abstract

Inflammation is a response of the body’s defense system in preparation for tissue repair. Acute inflammation is characterized by heat, redness, pain, and formation of edema. Acute inflammation involve the realese of inflammatory mediators. Muntingia calabura is a herbal plant commonly used as an anti-inflammatory medicine containing bioactive coumpounds such as flavonoids, triterpenoids, and alkaloids that can inhibit the regulation of inflammatory mediators. This study aims to determine the anti-inflammatory activity and optimal dosage of M. calabura infusion in addressing acute inflammation in rats. The research method is a laboratory experiment using Wistar strain white rats that divided into 7 treatment groups: normal, negative control, positive control (sodium diclofenac and methylprednisolone), and M. calabura infusion at doses of 150, 300, and 600 mg/kg body weight. Each rats model induced with 1% carrageenan at 0.2 ml intraplantar, the formed edema is measured using a plethysmometer every 30 minutes for the first 3 hour and every 60 minutes for the following 3 hour. The result indicate that M. calabura infusion has acute anti-inflammatory effect on white rats model induced with carrageenan, with the most optimal dose being 600 mg/kg body weight, showing a pattern of anti-inflammatory activity similar to methylprednisolone.

Abstract

Background: Obesity, reflected by high body mass index (BMI) value, has become a global health concern. Both obesity and vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) are major risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases. Although many studies have shown that obesity induces angiogenesis through increased VEGF-A, there remains a  gap regarding the correlation between BMI categories and VEGF-A levels. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between various level of BMI and VEGF-A concentrations. Methods: This cross-sectional in vivo study analyzed blood samples from 90 adults enrolled in the Universitas Padjadjaran Wellness Program ( December 2022–June 2023) selected using simple random sampling.VEGF-A concentrations were measured using multiplex ELISA assays. Data normality was assessed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Differences between BMI groups were analyze with ANOVA, and correlations were evaluated using Pearson’s test. Results: Of the 90 samples, 62 were included, and were grouped as normal weight (29%), overweight (32.2%), obesity class I (30.6%), obesity class II (6.4%), and obesity class III (1.6%). Mean VEGF-A concentrations showed an increasing trend with higher BMI, though differences between groups were not statistically significant (p=0.482). A weak positive correlation was observed between BMI and VEGF-A levels (r=0.267; p=0.036).Conclusion: Higher BMI is associated with higher VEGF-A, indicating obesity-induced inflammation and angiogenic activity. These findings highlight the importance of weight control through balanced diet and physical activity to mitigate long-term risks of cardiometabolic and chronic diseases.
