Importing and import uploading

[edit source]

To preserve edit histories and observe the attribution requirements of the licenses, content from our sister projects should be imported rather than simply pasted into a new module.

  • Importers can import pages from any of the English-language projects, Simple English Wikibooks, Meta, and Wikispecies.
  • Administrators, and import uploaders, can import from any wiki (even non-WMF).

Requests to import can be made to help in making or expanding a book, and to move works from other projects that fit Wikibooks' scope.

  • Place requests below and an administrator or importer will try to perform the import promptly.
  • Note that administrators and importers are not responsible for moving and cleaning up pages. Please watch this page for when the import is complete and take care of the imported page.

Administrators and importers:

  • Please read Help:Importing first.
  • To import a page, go to Special:Import.
  • Pages will by default import into Transwiki:Page's name, which can be moved to a new location.
  • After import, add {{dewikify}} to the page and make a note where the imported page has ended up.
  • Pages with extremely long edit histories may fail to import. In this case, a single revision which gives attribution to the source wiki will be imported. While this isn't ideal, it should satisfy our licensing. Note that repeated attempts to import may eventually bring over the history, so if it fails on the first attempt, you might want to try it a few more times. Please see T17000, and ask for it to be resolved sooner.

Non-free media uploading

[edit source]

Where non-free media is required in a book, editors may request an administrator or uploader to upload the file by making a request at files for upload.

Import and Merge

[edit source]

Use this section for imports that need to be "history-merged" with a module that has already been started using copy-paste.

Add requests using the form:

*[[Project:Page name]] → [[Target Page]] ~~~~

Import request: Gameplay of Pokémon

[edit source]

Requesting that Gameplay of Pokémon be imported to here because while it was deleted per an AfD on Wikipedia, it can useful for this wiki, and the administrator who undeleted it needs to delete the article again once it's imported here.

Also requesting imports of w:Cinnabar Island, w:Saffron City, w:Fuchsia City, w:Celadon City, w:Seafoam Islands, w:Cerulean Cave, w:Vermillion City, and w:Indigo Plateau for A Traveler's Guide to the World of Pokémon/Kanto (as subpages). 2005-Fan (discusscontribs) 03:02, 2 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi @2005-Fan! Could you clarify which content you're hoping to import? The links you included are all subpages of larger articles—do you want the entire articles imported and you will only use part of them? —Kittycataclysm (discusscontribs) 22:38, 4 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Kittycataclysm: Entire articles. Once they're added, i'll undo the redirects. 2005-Fan (discusscontribs) 01:51, 5 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Which complete articles do you want to be imported here? Codename Noreste (discusscontribs) 01:53, 5 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Gameplay of Pokémon, Cinnabar Island, Saffron City, Fuchsia City, Celadon City, Seafoam Islands, Cerulean Cave, Vermillion City, Indigo Plateau, Poké Ball, User:Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles/Pokémon types, Pokédex, and Pokémon evolution--all from Wikipedia. 2005-Fan (discusscontribs) 01:57, 5 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Some of these redirect to sections of some Pokémon articles. Codename Noreste (discusscontribs) 02:11, 5 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, but many Wikipedia articles were imported here to certain wikibooks in the past, such as A Traveler's Guide to the World of Pokémon. And every article I listed there has page history from before it was a redirect. 2005-Fan (discusscontribs) 02:14, 5 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Are you sure you want these pages listed above to be imported? Codename Noreste (discusscontribs) 03:09, 5 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes 2005-Fan (discusscontribs) 11:31, 5 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Next up:

Partially done, but I didn't import the non-draft pages to here yet because they would require an XML upload. Codename Noreste (discusscontribs) 16:29, 7 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Codename Noreste: Please note that all administrators have the ability to XML import on the English Wikibooks. JJPMaster (she/they) 16:30, 7 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I understand this already, but I have never done this before. Codename Noreste (discusscontribs) 16:32, 7 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Forgot Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles/Pokémon types. It was originally in mainspace but was repurposed as a user's subpage for whatever reason. Note there's lot of history revisions, like the last three I listed above. 2005-Fan (discusscontribs) 16:54, 7 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Here's even more that I want to add to the appropriate Pokemon wikibooks:
2005-Fan (discusscontribs) 00:28, 8 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
@2005-Fan: I'm working on Gameplay of Pokemon now, but for some reason, only the first 1,000 revisions are in the XML file. Here, we have three options:
  • Get an enwiki administrator to split all revisions after this one to a separate page. Since there are over 4,000 revisions, this would likely need to be done several more times afterward.
  • Don't import the page history at all, and just include the history on the talk page (see WB:UT). This would likely turn that talk page the largest page on the entire wiki.
  • Just link to the page history on the talk page. Here, we would have to delete everything we have imported already and then add that link. Additionally, I'm not entirely sure if this is allowed under the provision of the GNU FDL that is visible at the top of my userpage (section 4-I).

The GFDL requires list of all authors. I had a python script made by GPT that extracts all authors, which are like over 2,000 of them. I can post them if you'd like. 2005-Fan (discusscontribs) 00:31, 8 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
@2005-Fan: That sounds like a good idea we could try. JJPMaster (she/they) 12:45, 9 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Done
I feel I need some importer privileges to be able to help out with this, since it's a lot. 2005-Fan (discusscontribs) 13:20, 9 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
You can request that permission on Wikibooks:Requests for permissions. Codename Noreste (discusscontribs) 14:07, 9 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Okay, done 2005-Fan (discusscontribs) 15:18, 9 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
