markdownabstract_The Financialization of GDP_ delivers an exceptional perspective and a much-needed criticism on the malpractices in the formulation of national accounting. This book is an excellent resource for academics, researchers, students and professionals who work in the broad area of financialization and macroeconomics in general.

In the third chapter of Capital, Marx observed: "As long as the social character of labour appears as the money existence of the commodity and hence as a thing outside actual production, monetary crises, independent of real crises or as an intensification of them, are unavoidable. It is evident on the other hand that, as long as a bank’s credit is not undermined, it can alleviate the panic in such cases by increasing its credit money, whereas it increases this panic by contracting credit" (Marx 1991: 649). As we know, financial crises are sometimes the prelude to, and sometimes the result of, a crisis of over-accumulation of capital. Sometimes, again, the financial crisis manifests itself independently of the broader economic conjuncture, that is to say does not have any significant effect on the level of profitability and the level of employment of the "factors of production" in the other sectors of the economy above and beyond the financial sphere or some speci...

The last studies that are investigating the Arab Spring are connecting it with the worldwide food price shocks that occurred between 2007-8 and the commodity prices that kept on rising until the uprisings. First of all, we aim to gather the bibliography concerned and to shed light to some of the aspects of the riots that contributed to the rise of the prices (such as the liberalization of the economies of the MENA countries over the last decades, often with the IMF's and the World Bank's contribution, the reforms that accompanied it and subsequently, the food policy that most of the countries of the region were following) and the way they did it. Then, we will try to put the rebellions in a broader framework, focusing on the political economy of the countries and the socio-economic factors that, in our opinion, were connected with them. We believe that it is really interesting to study the way the people responded to all these reforms and to find out what they were hoping to achieve by participating to these protests. We will try to comprehend their motives, their needs and their expectations from all of these events. Finally, we are trying to find out if there is an inner connection between the uprisings that took place in this region during 2010-11 (and that are still going on in some of these countries), the food riots that had broken out in various countries between 2007-8 and the riots that followed the Arab ones in all over the world (from the "Occupy Wall Street" movement, to the student demonstrations in the UK and the various ways that the peoples of the European South responded to the austerity plans).

Ορθόδοξος έμπορος» ή «ανατολίτης έμπορος» ή «έλληνας έμπορος» Πριν ξεκινήσουμε το θέμα μας καλό θα ήταν να διευκρινίσουμε το εξής: Ένα από τα πιο πολύπλοκα ζητήματα στη βιβλιογραφία, είναι η διασαφήνιση του όρου «ορθόδοξος βαλκάνιος» έμπορος ή «έλληνας» έμπορος που αναφέρουν οι πηγές της εποχής. Η δυσκολία έγκειται στο ότι με βάση τα σημερινά κριτήρια θα κάναμε κάποιο εθνικό διαχωρισμό με βάση γλωσσικά ή θρησκευτικά κριτήρια. Όμως, οι άνθρωποι μέχρι το τέλος του 18 ου αιώνα δε διαχώριζαν εαυτόν κατ'αυτόν τον τρόπο.

Στην εργασία αυτή έχουμε επιλέξει να ψηλαφίσουμε τις κοινωνικές τάξεις στον ελληνικό κοινωνικό σχηματισμό από την έναρξη της παγκόσμιας χρηματοπιστωτικής κρίσης του 2008 και κατά τη διάρκεια της οικονομικής ύφεσης που την ακολούθησε. Μελετάμε τις μεταβολές που συντελέστηκαν στην κοινωνική δομή κατά την περίοδο 2008- 2013 ανά τομέα, ομάδες ατομικών επαγγελμάτων, θέση στο επάγγελμα, μονοψήφιο κλάδο, ενώ λαμβάνουμε υπόψιν το βαθμό αστικότητας και το φύλο. Διερευνούμε, επιπλέον, τους μετασχηματισμούς στους ανέργους, τους εργαζόμενους υπό το νέο καθεστώς και τους μετανάστες. Ταυτόχρονα, με βάση τα στοιχεία των εθνικών απογραφών 2001 και 2011, συγκρίνουμε τις μεταβολές στον κοινωνικό ιστό σε βάθος δεκαετίας.

Προσπαθούμε να παρουσιάσουμε στην ουσία την οικονομική πρόταση της Αριστεράς, στα
πλαίσια των κοινωνικο-οικονομικών συνθηκών της περιόδου, θεωρώντας ότι το πολιτικό στοιχείο
διαμορφώνεται στη βάση του οικονομικού σε τελική ανάλυση και με τη σειρά του επιδρά στο
οικονομικό. Ή, όπως λέει και ο Κακριδής2
, “Η στενή σχέση ανάμεσα στην οικονομία και την
πολιτική συνιστά τον πρώτο κοινωνιολογικό νόμο και ερμηνεύει τη σημασία της πολιτικής
διάστασης κάθε αναπτυξιακού προγράμματος. Το ζήτημα της πολιτικής εξουσίας αναδεικνύεται
σημαντικότερο από το φυσικο- γεωγραφικό ντετερμινισμό (έλλειψη εδαφών, φυσικού πλούτου
κλπ.) που φαίνεται να απασχολεί τους 'αστούς οικονομολόγους'.” Επιπλέον, πιστεύουμε πως η
συγκεκριμένη πρόταση ήταν απότοκος της περιόδου που τη γέννησε, ενώ ταυτόχρονα συνέβαλε σε
μια άλλη “γέννα”, που δεν ήταν άλλη από την οικονομική συζήτηση που διεξαγόταν παράλληλα.
Αυτή διεξαγόταν από όλους τους πολιτικούς χώρους και σχηματισμούς και αντίστοιχή της δεν έχει
ξαναυπάρξει στα ελληνικά δεδομένα. Ωστόσο, θα εστιάσουμε την προσοχή μας στην πρόταση από
μεριάς της Αριστεράς, η οποία συμπυκνώθηκε στο έργο του Δημήτρη Μπάτση Η βαρειά
βιομηχανία στην Ελλάδα.

This article focuses on the land redistribution on the island of Crete during the Autonomy period (1898–1913). Following the massive Muslim departure in 1898 and 1899, the acquisition of Muslim land by the Christian majority became a reality mainly through private borrowing at high rates of interest. In the first years of Autonomy the leading groups in the cities and the countryside functioned as private lenders since the two credit institutions (the Public Benefit Foundations and the Bank of Crete) were either controlled by them or unable to respond to the over-demand for loans. With the passage of time, land purchase was facilitated by the economic recovery of the population and the more efficient operation of the credit institutions. Thus, a great part of the Christian population of Crete purchased land and the small landownership regime (underway since the revolution of 1821) was enhanced before the island's incorporation into the Greek state (1913).

This article  is part of the wider discussion on the incorporation of regional entities in the world economy during the second half of the 19th century. How does an economy of the eastern Mediterranean respond to the challenge of its accelerated integration in the global markets? The present article analyzes the characteristics of the Cretan economy and traces the working mechanisms that led to the transformation and finally to economic stagnation and the  degradation of its position in the international division of labour.

The Greek Revolution of 1821 constituted a crucial step towards the establishment of the Modern Greek State in 1830. The revolutionary upheaval, which extended to the island of Crete in 1821 and dominated the Cretan domestic affairs till 1828, did not produce the much desired by the Christians secession of Crete and its incorporation into the Greek State. However, the prolonged revolution of 1821 resulted in radical socio-economic transformations. Perhaps the most indicative of the aforementioned transformations consisted of the remodeling of the population along the following axes: 1) the radical decrease of the population and the eventual numerical superiority of the Christian over the Muslim population that upset the pre-1821 numerical balance, and 2) the decline of the Muslim landed aristocracy in the countryside and the subsequent decrease of its political and economic power. The revolution-induced transformations accentuated between 1830 and 1840 when the Sultan ceded the island to the Egypt regent Mohammed Ali in recompense for his assistance in quelling the Greek revolution. Thus, on most of the island, large estates were partitioned, and smaller (mainly Christian) properties became the norm. Moreover, it was during this period that the bases were laid for the economic development of the island, the tanzimat political transformations that followed the return of the island to the Sultan in 1840 and finally the dominance of the Christians over the Muslims. The final result of the long-term procedures set forth by the Greek Revolution of 1821 was the achievement of autonomy in 1898 and eventually the incorporation of Crete into the Greek State in 1913.

During the years that followed the establishment at the southwestern corner of the Empire of the Greek State in 1830, the ottoman presence in Europe remained virtually unchallenged. The reforms (tanzimat) pursued from 1839 to 1876 following a series of domestic revolts and international interventions considerably contributed towards this direction. These reforms entrenched to a certain extent the rights of Empire’s non-Muslim populations seeking their incorporation and subsequently the safeguarding of the Empire’s integrity. However, in July 1878, the Ottoman Empire suffered considerable territorial losses in the aftermath of the Berlin Conference. In Crete, in August of the same year, negotiations started in the suburb of Chalepa between representatives of the Sublime Port and of the Cretan population with the participation of an envoy of the Great Powers. In October, the Chalepa Pact was signed. This Pact established a new political model in Crete that sought the conditional preservation of the Ottoman suzerainty over the island and its potential implementation in other European provinces of the Empire in case of success. The relative liberalization, the subtle democratization and the partial autonomy of the island from the Ottoman center instituted a new status quo that went far beyond the initial intentions of the Sublime Porte as they upset the ethnic and religious equilibrium. In fact, the new regime provided the Christians with considerable political authority that, combined with the long-term trend of the second half of the 19th century of Christian socio-economic empowerment, brought new rules to the Cretan society.

Η οθωμανική μεταρρύθμιση που εκδηλώθηκε στην Κρήτη κατά την περίοδο της Χαλέπας (1878-89) επιχείρησε την εισαγωγή νέων, μαζί και την ενεργοποίηση και μεταλλαγή των υπαρχόντων θεσμών. Το νέο θεσμικό πλαίσιο επέφερε τη σχετική φιλελευθεροποίηση του καθεστώτος, τη μερική αυτονόμηση του νησιού από το οθωμανικό κέντρο και επέτρεψε την πολιτική κυριαρχία των χριστιανών επί των μουσουλμάνων, η οποία συνοδεύτηκε από την εντεινόμενη -κατά την εποχή της Χαλέπας- οικονομική και κοινωνική τους άνοδο. Εξάλλου, η περιορισμένη φιλελευθεροποίηση και ο δειλός εκδημοκρατισμός διαμόρφωσαν και τους όρους κατάρρευσης του καθεστώτος της Χαλέπας, καθώς, υπό τις συνθήκες οικονομικής κρίσης της τελευταίας τριετίας (1887-89), οξύνθηκαν οι κοινωνικοπολιτικές συγκρούσεις μεταξύ των κοινωνικών ομάδων. Η αποτυχία του καθεστώτος της Χαλέπας συνιστά το τέλος κάθε προσπάθειας συναινετικής μεταρρύθμισης και επιφέρει το τέλος της οθωμανικής κυριαρχίας στην Κρήτη, που επιβεβαιώνεται και τυπικά το 1898 με την επιβολή του νέου καθεστώτος της Αυτονομίας.

This article focuses upon the changes in local and international maritime connections of the island of Crete during the period 1877-1913, a time when the transport system and especially merchant shipping transformed radically on a global scale. By using mainly British and French consular commercial reports, local press and the proceedings of the Assembly’s meetings, the paper traces the development and shift in the steamship regular connection of Crete with other regions and the attempts in organizing the coastal shipping both influenced by the transition from sail to steam and the new political order of administrative (in 1878-1889) and full (in 1898-1913) autonomy from the Ottoman Empire.

Based on the English, French and Russian consular reports and the proceedings of the sessions of the Cretan General Assembly, this paper reviews the fight between local and foreign merchants in Crete in the beginning of the 1880s. Since the signing of the Halepa Pact (1878), the island obtained a limited autonomy from the Ottoman Empire and the bourgeoisie, represented by the General Assembly, attempted, within the concept of de-ottomanization, to eliminate the advantages –mainly financial- which the foreign protégés defended by invoking the pre-existing capitulatory regime. The paper provides an overview of the pursuits of the Cretans, the potential benefits from the elimination of the foreigners’ privileges, the strong resistance of the foreigners, the Consuls and their respective governments, and the role of the Porte.

In the course charted by Late Ottoman Crete after 1840, the year 1889 marks a key point, as radical change to the institutional context created by the Halepa Pact from November 1878 threatened the powerful political and social status of Christians, which had consolidated over the eleven years from 1879 to 1889. Under the weight of the economic and fiscal crisis from 1889-1895, a strong anti-Ottoman consciousness formed in the greater part of the Cretan population, playing a decisive role in Crete’s route to secession from the Ottoman Empire. This study draws on British consular reports, the limited –due to ban- and censored local press (Mesogeios and Herakleion newspapers), and Kriti, the official gazette containing decisions and decrees by institutions on the island and at the Porte, as well as the proceedings of the General Assembly meetings at the 1895 and 1896 sessions.

Στην διάρκεια του κρητικού 19ου αιώνα (1830-1913) η οικονομία και η κοινωνία της Κρήτης γνώρισαν σπουδαίες μεταβολές.  Ποιοι τομείς της κρητικής οικονομίας αναπτύχθηκαν και ποιοι παρέμειναν στάσιμοι ή παρήκμασαν στην πάροδο του χρόνου και ποιο μοντέλο οικονομικής ανάπτυξης επικράτησε;  Πως οι Κρήτες ξεπέρασαν τους περιορισμούς του χώρου και εκμεταλλεύτηκαν τις δυνατότητες του νησιού; Με ποιο τρόπο αντιμετώπισαν τις οικονομικές κρίσεις και υφέσεις οι οποίες αμφισβήτησαν την ευχερή διαβίωσή τους; Η επιδείνωση των οικονομικών όρων επηρέασε την επαναστατικότητα των χριστιανών; Και αντιστρόφως η επαναστατικότητα και οι εξεγέρσεις επηρέασαν την κρητική οικονομία στη βραχεία και τη μακρά διάρκεια; Μέσα από ποιες διεργασίες οι οικονομικοί μετασχηματισμοί αναδιαμόρφωσαν την κρητική κοινωνία αναδιατάσσοντας τις ηγετικές ομάδες και αλλοιώνοντας την οικονομική, κοινωνική και πολιτική ισορροπία μεταξύ χριστιανών και μουσουλμάνων υπέρ των πρώτων; Και τέλος πως οι δυσμενείς οικονομικοί όροι, υπό τη συνεπίδραση του εθνικισμού, συνέβαλαν στην απονομιμοποίηση της οθωμανικότητας στη συνείδηση των χριστιανών και στην ενίσχυση της ελληνικής εθνικής ταυτότητας;
Τα παραπάνω είναι μερικά από τα ερωτήματα που επιχειρείται να απαντηθούν στο βιβλίο αυτό με τη συστηματική χρήση αδιερεύνητων μέχρι σήμερα πηγών μεταξύ των οποίων δεσπόζουν οι προξενικές και διπλωματικές αναφορές (αγγλικές, γαλλικές και ελληνικές), οι στατιστικές πληθυσμού και γεωργίας-κτηνοτροφίας, τα  πρακτικά των συζητήσεων των κρητικών Γενικών Συνελεύσεων , ο Tύπος της Κρήτης, και τα περιηγητικά κείμενα.

Βάση δεδομένων και κωδικοποίηση των απαντήσεων των ερωτηματολογίων μαθητών και καθηγητών που αποτελούν το Όγδοο Κεφάλαιο του Παραρτήματος της Διδακτορικής Διατριβής με τίτλο "Μια δημόσια ιστορία για την ιστορική εκπαίδευση. Η διδασκαλία της τοπικής ιστορίας στη δευτεροβάθμια εκπαίδευση" η οποία εκπονήθηκε στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης, Παιδαγωγικό Τμήμα Δημοτικής Εκπαίδευσης και υποστηρίχθηκε το 2021.
