Template:Country category is adding some bad categories to Category:Punjab, India. I figure you are the most likely to be able to fix this. - Jmabel ! talk 20:56, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe only Category:Of North India is wrong. - Jmabel ! talk 20:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Seems to be an issue with the regional assignments, which is more the bailiwick of some other users. Looks maybe fixed now? I've been away for a bit, but Sbb1413 was working on them last I saw. Josh (talk) 01:32, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm (temporarily) removing the support of region categories from {{Country category}} and {{Topic by country}}, since region categories should be needed if and only if there are real pan-regional content. The Category:Of North India category should be empty now as I have removed North India as a region from {{Country label}}. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs • uploads) 02:05, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- Sounds good, I assumed you were in process and it would be sorted. Thanks! Josh (talk) 03:17, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

Issues with "<people> with <color> eyes" categories
[edit]Hi, Josh. Can you look at these categories? The category navigation template is putting some bad categories on them. An example is everything in the (undefined) category Category:With blue eyes -- that's one of the problem categories. Similar issues exist with these other eye colors:
- Category:With amber eyes
- Category:With black eyes
- Category:With blue eyes
- Category:With brown eyes
- Category:With chestnut eyes
- Category:With cyan eyes
- Category:With dark brown eyes
- Category:With gray eyes
- Category:With green eyes
- Category:With hazel eyes
- Category:With light blue eyes
- Category:With light brown eyes
- Category:With light green eyes
- Category:With orange eyes
- Category:With pink eyes
- Category:With purple eyes
- Category:With red eyes
- Category:With teal eyes
- Category:With yellow eyes
I was tempted to just scrap the navigation template for these, but you've been able to fix similar issues in the past, so I thought I'd check with you first.
Oh, and in the process of looking for all the eye colors, I saw the also-undefined category Category:With pink hair, so maybe you could look at those, too? Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:16, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- I've been on a bit of a hiatus, but I'll try and look at these. At first look, there are a number of changes made since last I looked at this topic, but in some cases simple deletion of the second {{Category navigation}} call is the right answer. Others maybe need to use a different format. I'll have to sort through, thanks for bringing this to attention. Josh (talk) 01:29, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

I have spoken to you before about this discussion here, apparently, there are no more objections. Could you close it?
Thanks! Minerva97 (talk) 18:12, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- I am on a bit of a hiatus, but I closed the CfD so you can go ahead and do the deletions. Thanks for the ping. Josh (talk) 01:27, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

People posture-template
[edit]Hi, there. I'm having a little issue with the {{People posture}}, namely, it doesn't let me move the category Category:Men with hands on chin into the Category:Male humans with hands on chin and I also can't move the latter into Category:People with hands on chin. Same problem with the other gender and with moving Category:Adolescent girls with hands on chin into Category:Girls with hands on chin. I can't even move Category:Sportspeople with hands on chin into Category:People with hands on chin.
Furthermore, it creates somewhat of a duplicate category to Category:Chin on hand, where Category:Hands on chin (created in 2024) contains all the people-by-posture categories, while Category:Chin on hand (created in 2010) contains all the other categories that are about chins on hand(s). Actually, Category:Chin on hand also used to contain people-by-posture categories, but I happened to have moved them into the proper people-categories just now (see the categories' histories, e.g.: [1][2][3][4][5][6]). While I agree that naming the category "Hands on chin" kinda sounds more intuitive, it so appears that "Chin on hand" is the more established one (despite not using the plural form for "hand" for some unknown reason). "Images by text"
[edit]Greetins Josh,
My early, in depth experience with these categories were back in 2022 here: Commons:Categories for discussion/2022/02/Category:Images by text
Today, at the Village Pump, this discussion was statrted here: [7], with a reply which quotes your writing "Files should only be included in a text category if the exact text features prominently...". This quoted text was added by you here: [8].
- Would you please comment at the Pump. Specifically, I do not recall and the CfD linked above did not mention the word "prominently" or that subject. Did I miss something? I thought we did good work in 2022. My opinion is that "prominence" is not a factor in including a file in the Xxxx (text) categories. Also, in the 2022 Cfd you linked to Category:747 (number), as an example, which does not require "prominence" and an even more directly relevant Category:Numbers on objects by number- also does not require any pre-conditions to add to these categories.
with Best Regards Josh, -- Ooligan (talk) 17:59, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
Categories
[edit]Hi Josh, would you mind taking a break from creating categories until the community has had a chance to discuss the utility of the type of categories you're creating? Thanks! Nosferattus (talk) 15:45, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Nosferattus This is a completely unhelpful comment, since it gives no indication what categories you are talking about, nor links to any discussions on the matter. Josh (talk) 13:57, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
- Sorry about that. Here's a link to the Village Pump: Commons:Village_pump#Category:2_men_with_other_organisms;_1_boy_with_4_women;_5_women_with_other_people;_etc. Nosferattus (talk) 16:27, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
- Also a related CFD discussion: Commons:Categories for discussion/2024/10/Category:2 men with other organisms. Nosferattus (talk) 16:37, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Nosferattus Thank you. I haven't worked on these kinds of categories for several months. Whatever the results of the discussion are is fine with me. Josh (talk) 17:05, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
File:World operators of the Il-10.png requires updating
[edit]Hi Joshbaumgartner,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:World operators of the Il-10.png is out of date. The map is missing Indonesia as an operator. Could you update it? Thanks again. Jauhsekali (talk) 14:34, 8 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Jauhsekali Wow, that's a long time ago that I made that map. I know I don't have the software anymore, but I can use another editor to do this, I'm sure.
- A question... do you know a good reference that shows that Indonesia actually operated the aircraft? It sounds like they supposedly got some from Poland, but it seems they didn't accept them into service for performance reasons and returned them to sender. I can't find any reliable source that shows they actually used them for real. I would like to add the citation to the description of the change.
- Thanks! Josh (talk) 01:57, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry for the rather late reply, I just noticed your message. To be honest the aircraft service is pretty obscure, so aside from the cited book on the English Wiki, there's this CIA report, and several photos of Indonesian Il-10 suffering landing gear collapse. Yes I know it's a blogspot, but they attributed the photos to the Halim Perdanakusuma AFB Museum collection. Indonesian military is not big on uploading historical photos to the web, maybe if I have time I'll try visiting them and seeing the photos first hand. I'll let you know if I found other reliable sources on it. Jauhsekali (talk) 09:28, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
Request for Template:People nav (and Template:Category navigation)
[edit]Hiya,
I've noticed that if I add {{People nav}} to, say, Category:Children with birds (using {{People nav|children|suf=with birds}}
), it will not automatically categorize that page into Category:People with birds. (The same holds for Category:Boys with birds, where I had to manually add Children with birds and Male people with birds.)
Besides, it appears there are a lot of categories that misuse {{Category navigation}} in a way that is really inappropriate for categorization. For instance, Men with birds, Girls with birds, and Adult humans with birds all used {{Category navigation|people||with birds}}
before today.
I believe it was OK when you added that template a couple years ago, but nowadays it was putting those categories into the nonexistent Category:With birds, which I've now emptied. (Likewise, Men with birds in art and Adult humans with birds in art were ending up in Category:With birds in art, which I also emptied.)
So, can you do something that will make {{People nav}} work more like {{People wearing clothing}} when it comes to categorization of persons? Thanks so much!!! 158.106.48.10 17:45, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- The problem is that several of the supporting templates have been edited in the meantime which have caused probably unintended downstream consequences. Sbb1413 has been doing most of the current work on these templates. They are probably more aware of their current state and any issues. Thanks, Josh (talk) 18:07, 9 June 2025 (UTC)

File:World operators of the MiG-23.png requires updating
[edit]Hi Joshbaumgartner,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:World operators of the MiG-23.png is out of date. This map is missing DR Congo and Uganda as retired operators; Vietnam and Yemen never operates MiG-23; it has been retired by Cuba, Ivory Coast, Namibia, and Sri Lanka; Sudan reportedly still uses MiG-23 (as of Dec '24), and South Sudan is now independent state. Could you update it? Thanks again. Jauhsekali (talk) 07:38, 18 July 2025 (UTC)

Hi, Josh. I just closed this old CFD that you opened in 2021. The categories will migrate over time because I changed Template:BIC. However, I don't see where the galleries are getting the category from (I don't see that template in the galleries). Can you tell? Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 04:10, 5 September 2025 (UTC)
