Chip Walter's Last Ape Standing is an unconventional book on human evolution, in a positive way. Missing are the usual cast of colorful paleoanthropological characters such as Raymond Dart and Louis Leakey, and many of the fossil discoveries that have shaped the scientific history of paleoanthropology. Instead, the reader gets to explore a panoply of topics, from the co-evolution of music and language to the origins and consequences of primate curiosity. It sparks interest in the many dimensions of human evolution, and for that the author deserves credit.

ToyBox Futuristi is a digital puppeteering toolkit created by a student team from Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center (known from this point forward as ETC). The team took its inspiration from the work of Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero, in particular Balli Plastici, the 'plastic dance' he created in 1918. Depero's marionettes encapsulate the Futurist ideal of machinery striving to break free of human control, a theme expanded upon by the use of contemporary technologies. The project was driven by two deliverables: the digital re-imagining of Balli Plastici, a version of which was shown at the Performa 09 Arts Festival in New York City, and the development of ToyBox Futuristi, the puppetry software that enables users to create their own versions of the ballet. This paper will focus on the creation of ToyBox Futuristi, including how the creative team took inspiration from the work of Depero and the Futurists while simultaneously establishing a sense of style and functionality adapted to the digital age.

Digital video is becoming increasingly ubiquitous. However, editing video remains difficult for several reasons. It is a time-based medium, it has dual tracks of audio and video, and current tools force users to work at the smallest level of detail. In this paper, we describe several visualization and interaction techniques that use video metadata, including a transcript, to mitigate the problems of editing in this domain. We implemented these techniques in Silver, an authoring tool designed to make it easier for novice users to edit video. To help users visualize video, Silver provides multiple views with different semantic content and at different levels of abstraction, including storyboard, editable transcript and timeline views. Silver offers intelligent editing operations that help users resolve the inconsistencies that arise because of the different boundaries in audio and video. We conducted a preliminary user study to investigate the effectiveness of the system. Participants successfully edited video after only a short tutorial, both with and without intelligent editing assistance. Our research suggests several ways in which video editing tools could use metadata to assist users in the reuse and composition of video.

Vastdigital libraries of information will soon be available on the nation's Information Superhighway as a result of emerging technologies for multimedia computing. These libraries wiU profoundly impact the conduct of business, professional, andpersonal activity. However, it is not enough to simply store and play back video (ss in currently envisioned commercial video-on-demand services); to be most effective, new technology is needed for searching through these vast data collections and retrieving the most relevant selections.

Objective-To examine the total and domain-specific prevalence of verbally and physically abusive, socially inappropriate, and care-resistive behaviors according to the Minimum Data Set (MDS) compared with research instruments in nursing home residents with severe dementia.

Silver is an authoring tool that aims to allow novice users to edit digital video. The goal is to make editing of digital video as easy as text editing. Silver provides multiple coordinated views, including project, source, outline, subject, storyboard, textual transcript and timeline views. Selections and edits in any view are synchronized with all other views. A variety of recognition algorithms are applied to the video and audio content and then are used to aid in the editing tasks. The Informedia Digital Library supplies the recognition algorithms and metadata used to support intelligent editing, and Informedia also provides search and a repository. The metadata includes shot boundaries and a time-synchronized transcript, which are used to support intelligent selection and intelligent cut/copy/paste.

The Information Age is fully upon us. A recent article noted that there are perhaps 50 million people using the Internet on a regular basis, and that "the current growth rate is about 15% per month (!) and this could well continue until almost all of those in the 'developed world' are connected" p. 30]. In addition, the digital domain consists not only of text but increasingly of other media representations, from graphics images to audio to motion video. As the amount of information and number of users exponentially escalate, more attention focuses on the basic problems of information management: How do you digitize information? How can you then visualize it and find what you need? How do you use and manipulate it effectively? How is it stored and managed? The proliferation of technical articles and special issues addressing these questions underscore their importance; see for example the special issue on content-based retrieval [Narasimhalu95] or digital libraries . This chapter will survey some of that work, especially that which relates to the treatment of video and the use of digital video libraries for education.
