Google's new app for Android and IOS is due in the coming days. In contrast to Hangouts this one will have end-to-end encryption and is only supposed to support private chats, that means only conversations between two people are supported. Hangouts on the other hand supports group chats of up to 150 people 'hanging out together'. It also used to be popular for online courses but falls down on the privacy front as records are stored on Google's servers, although data is encrypted in transit, and because people used to be able to just enter some chats.
Slackware in the main, but also other bits and bobs on Linux, BSD, and all sorts of things of interest.

The Acer 13" Chromebook (Nvidia Tegra K1)
A little over four months ago I bought one of these slim devices when my main workhorse laptop showed signs of nearing retirement. A little Chromebook seemed just the ticket for streaming videos, checking web mail, browsing, researching, downloading and uploading and editing documents online. Of course it's not a full laptop, but as a backup device it did just fit the bill and I have since found it's really all I need when travelling or on the go.
