Japanese firms and their management practices (including those related to expatriate management) ... more Japanese firms and their management practices (including those related to expatriate management) have been of interest to international business researchers for decades. The international human resource management (IHRM) literature highlights the critical role expatriates' family play in the success or failure of global assignments. However, this issue has not been prominent in the literature on Japanese expatriates, despite the emphasis on collectivism and culture. This study uses the integrative literature review method to consolidate the research on Japanese work practices and expatriation issues in Japanese MNEs, with emphasis on Japanese family issues in expatriate management. Using family systems theory as the analytical lens, we identify themes that have been covered in the literature on Japanese global assignees and their families. Current gaps in the literature are highlighted, and we provide a future research agenda with broad themes that can contribute to the academic writing and practices of Japanese expatriate management.

Relevant research approaching ethics and the dark side of online communities has received widespread publication in a diverse set of journals with a wide variety of objectives and readers that has left its academic contribution broadly fragmented. To help shrink this gap in the literature, this study, through undertaking a systematic review, seeks to map the research on ethics and the dark side of online communities to grasp where the literature has come from and where it is going and, consequently, provide opportunities for future research. This study applied a bibliometric approach based on analysis of the bibliographic coupling with the manual coding of documents to examine the literature on the ethics and t...

This chapter evaluates ways in which innovation impacts on competitiveness and how the effects of entrepreneurship shape and fashion competitiveness. Using estimations of dynamic panels with the GMM estimator methodology by Arellano-Bover/Blundell-Bond, we analysed the disaggregated data for 276 NUTS2 regions from various European Union member states collected by Eurostat regional offices between 2005 and 2012. This study provides practical input into decision-making and effective policies that foster sustainable entrepreneurship. Our research seeks to address the gap in the literature concerning the measurement of innovation and entrepreneurship, and its influence over competitiveness at the European Union NUTS 2 regional level

Design/methodology/approach The authors apply the theory of planned behavior and hand-collect a database of Chinese born globals, purely domestic firms and traditional exporting firms. The authors’ hypothesis is that Chinese born globals [or young aspiring globals (YAGs)] will strive to acquire domestic and international patents at an early stage to institutionally protect their knowledge-capital via intellectual property rights as they enter the competitive global marketplace. Findings The results confirm that knowledge-focused YAGs apply for patents at an earlier stage than purely domestic and traditional exporting firms. However, in the long run, these firms are neither demonstrating increased knowledge capital by being more innovative nor producing more valuable innovations than t...

Design/methodology/approach This study applies a questionnaire survey to collect data from buyers in 224 Kuwaiti firms and uses the partial least squares structural equation model for data analysis. The study confirms the importance of relational and innovation benefits over economic consequences based on elem...

Am I ‘In or Out’? A social identity approach to studying expatriates’ social networks and adjustment in a host country context
Journal of Business Research, 2021

It explores the effectiveness of organizational training programs for expatriates and the role of host country nationals (HCNs) in the expatriate adjustment process. It further investigates how group membership at work influences the work-related outcomes related to expatriates’ personal, social and relational social identity dimensions. By interviewing key informants from three multinational enterprises (MNEs) in China, this study finds that traditional cross-cultural training practices are redundant as expatriates on various staffing patterns have a different understanding of local cultural and social values. We contribute by providing evidence of how the motivation for undertaking an assignment varies between SIEs (who view this role as a stepping-stone to find a better position in another organization) and OEs (who view this transfer as a key opportunity for promotion, within their current organization). Our findings also suggest that despite SIEs belief that they were in-group members of networks, HCNs do not distinguish between OEs and SIEs, and treated both groups as members of the out-group. We present the theoretical and practical implications of this study and provide future research directions in the paper.

Introduction-The evolution of entrepreneurship studies in the international business literature: Trends and direction for future research

Historically, IE literature has focused on the rapid and early internationalisation of new ventures and start-ups. However, over time, researchers have acknowledged that it is the identification and capture of international opportunities that represents an act of entrepreneurship in disrupting and creating markets in foreign countries. By applying this broader definition of IE, researchers can study activities by entrepreneurs and their start-ups solving social, cultural and environmental challenges in foreign markets. In this chapter, we review the development of IE, introduce the chapters in this book and highlight some important insights and avenues for future research
