Mining and mineral resources in Mozambique - statistics & facts
Mozambique's primary mineral resources include graphite, bauxite, gold, and precious stones. The African country also holds significant reserves of coal and natural gas. Extractive resources have, therefore, the potential to unlock Mozambique’s economic progress, as the country remains one of the poorest nations in Africa. In the last decade, mining and quarrying activities have expanded their contribution to the national economy. The industry’s share in the GDP jumped from 1.2 percent in 2010 to roughly 10 percent in 2020. Additionally, the number of people employed within the sector increased by roughly 45 percent in ten years.
