Energy prices in the U.S. - statistics & facts
The United States is a major producer of energy and the largest net exporter of natural gas in the world. Despite its leadership position, the country – which derived 80 percent of its primary energy from fossil fuels in 2023 - has been affected by the global energy market instability in recent years. Prices fluctuations brought in by fuel supply chain disruptions during the post-pandemic demand increase, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Middle East tensions have led to energy commodity prices and retail prices for electricity growing to new highs.
Cost of energy generation in the United States
Energy prices are influenced by several factors, including supply and demand, government subsidies or taxes, transmission and distribution infrastructure, weather patterns, as well as industry regulations. The cost of energy generation also differs based on the fuel and technology available for each energy source. Nuclear power plants have some of the highest levelized costs of energy (LCOE) generation in the U.S., due to the sophisticated mechanization underlying their energy generation process. Meanwhile, utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and onshore wind power installations have the lowest unsubsidized LCOE in the country. These renewable energy sources do not rely on feedstock or fuel, which contributes to rising the cost of nuclear, gas, and coal-fired energy generation. In contrast, they have been on a learning curve since they entered the market, meaning that their costs have declined with an inverse relation to their growing cumulative installed capacity. For instance, the cost of electricity generation by utility-scale solar PV and that of onshore wind have declined by over 70 and 60 percent between 2010 and 2023, respectively.Energy strategy in the United States
Compared to renewable energy sources, key indicators of fossil fuel prices in the U.S., namely West Texas Intermediate for crude oil, Henry Hub for natural gas, and Central Appalachian for coal have not shown a decline over the past decades, reflecting instead the price variability of the global market. In 2022 and 2023, energy price increase in the U.S. was driven by natural gas price volatility. In addition, aging infrastructure spending, expansion and upgrade of the power grid, and the impact of natural disasters like wildfires have weighed on the pockets of consumers. Over the past decades, the U.S. government has been investing in renewable power, energy storage, and electrification to achieve energy independence and security. The Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law have recently boosted the energy sector. However, as of 2025, President Trump’s change of direction on energy policy creates uncertainty around the future of the clean energy sector in the country.
