Plastic waste in the UK - statistics & facts
Plastic waste has become a major environmental issue worldwide, with the United Kingdom playing a substantial role in this problem. It is estimated that UK households throw away a staggering 90 billion pieces of plastic packaging a year, or 1.7 billion pieces a week. Overall plastic packaging waste generated in the UK adds up to more than two million metric tons annually. With plastic waste recycling rates in the country still significantly low, the government has been making strides in recent years to tackle the problem at the source by introducing policies to reduce the use of single-use products.
Recycling rates also include plastic waste exports, which are shipped abroad for reprocessing. The UK has relied on exports for many years due to insufficient infrastructure to deal with the enormous amounts of plastic waste it produces each year. Recent bans and restrictions on waste imports by countries such as China and Malaysia have placed increased pressure on how the UK manages its waste. Nevertheless, still more than half of plastic packaging waste collected for recycling in the UK in 2023 was exported, with Turkey recently becoming the main destination for UK plastic waste.
Looking ahead, the UK is also set to introduce a deposit return scheme (DRS) across the country to address the roughly 600 thousand tons of plastic bottles placed on the UK market every year. However, its implementation has been pushed to 2027 due to disagreements regarding its scope as well as the cost-of-living crisis.
What happens to plastic waste in the UK?
It is estimated that over half of post-consumer plastic waste generated in the UK gets burned for energy generation, while less than a third gets recycled. In addition, the UK sent around 20 percent of its post-consumer plastic waste to landfills in 2022. When it comes to packaging, the UK fares even worse. The war on plastic waste pollution
Plastics can take centuries to decompose, which is why plastic waste has become a growing concern in the UK. The government has introduced several policies in recent years, in a bid to combat plastic pollution, in particular from single-use products. A carrier bag charge has significantly reduced the number of single-use plastic carrier bags issued by supermarkets since its enforcement in 2015. There is also significant support for a ban on other problematic single-use plastics, such as cutlery, plates, stirrers, and coffee cups, with Scotland becoming the first part of the UK to implement such a ban.
