Online food delivery in the United States – statistics & facts
Home to the second biggest online food delivery market behind China, the United States generated an estimated 432 billion U.S. dollars in online food delivery revenue in 2025, with over 100 billion dollars from the meal delivery segment. By 2030, the market is forecast to surpass the 600-billion-dollar mark, as both the online grocery and meal delivery segments continue their upward climb.
DoorDash vs. UberEats: a lopsided rivalry
In the United States, two homegrown champions compete head-to-head to dominate the food delivery market: DoorDash and UberEats. On a global level, UberEats prevails as the leading food delivery operator worldwide. However, DoorDash held the largest share of online meal delivery sales in the U.S. as of mid-2025, while a consumer survey found that roughly three in four respondents had ordered through DoorDash in the past year. At nearly 19 million downloads, DoorDash was also the most downloaded food delivery app in the United States in 2024, with UberEats trailing behind at approximately 12 million downloads.
Consumer loyalty remains elusive
With the return of on-premise consumption and the rise of quick commerce companies, the online food delivery industry has become even more competitive. The U.S. alone counted over 180 million meal delivery users in 2025, yet winning their loyalty isn't easy. The ability to download different delivery apps and compare offers makes customer promiscuity an additional challenge, with DoorDash attracting nearly 109 million monthly web visits as of early 2026, well ahead of its competitors.
From chronic losses to record profits
In addition to the highly competitive playing field, online food delivery operators in the United States have also struggled with challenging macroeconomic conditions. This constituted a further challenge to an industry long plagued by chronic unprofitability. However, DoorDash's turnaround has been striking: the company posted net income approaching one billion dollars in 2025, while the total dollar value of orders on its marketplaces surpassed 100 billion dollars. As both DoorDash and Uber Eats continue expanding at home and overseas, the shift from growth-at-all-costs to sustainable profitability signals a maturing industry.
