The small island at the contact point of the East and South China Sea has a population of 17.t million people, but Taiwan’s financial punching power is dwarfed by the much smaller regions of Hong Kong and Singapore. The area never capitalized on its societal and geographical proximity to mainland China in the same way as the others have done.
