Defense manufacturing in India - statistics & facts
During India’s colonial era, ordnance factories were created in the subcontinent to manufacture guns and ammunition. Other than that, there was hardly any development of the defense sector in India. After independence, the defense manufacturing sector started to grow. In 1947, several technical research institutions were established which later became parts of India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). In the second half of the 20th century, more ordnance factories and public-owned defense companies were established to supply the Indian military. Further progress can be seen in the last three decades.
