Palm oil consumption in the countries of the EU-27 amounted to approximately **** million metric tons in 2024. Between 2012 and 2020 consumption levels were noticeably higher than in previous years. However, during the last two years, consumption has decreased again. For comparison, U.S. consumption amounted to *** million metric tons in 2022.

Palm oil use and production

Palm oil finds use as a cooking ingredient as well as being regularly used in processed foods. Indonesia is the biggest producer of palm oil, with a production volume of 46.7 million metric tons. Worldwide production of palm oil was expected to reach over ** million metric tons in 2025/26. 

UK palm oil imports

The UK imported roughly ***,000 metric tons of palm oil. While the amount of imported oil has been mostly stable, a strong fluctuation of the import value of palm oil could be observed during the last years with a sharp increase in 2022.
