crosswalks without traffic lights; no precipitation
Survey of 2022 conducted from August 10 to 31, 2022.
Vehicles included private passenger cars and private trucks driving on the pedestrian's side lane.
Conducted on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at two crosswalks per prefecture (total 94 survey spots). Crosswalks with the following characteristics:
- no traffic lights
- street with centerline; one lane in each direction; 2.75m to 3.5m lane width
- no intersection within five meters before or behind the crosswalk
- traffic volume of three to eight vehicles per minute (estimated)
- 40km/h to 60km/h speed limit
- non-rainy weather conditions
At each survey crosswalk, a JAF employee attempted to cross the street 50 times, exactly when a vehicle was arriving.
