Very excited to announce our investment in Charta Health today! At Madrona, we believe the most impactful AI companies don’t just speed up existing workflows — they reimagine them from first principles. Charta Health is building an AI-native platform that transforms chart review from a labor-intensive, error-prone process into a real-time intelligence layer — improving care quality, billing accuracy, and provider efficiency. Karan Mehandru and I have had the pleasure of getting to know founders Justin Liu, Scott Morris over the last couple of years and we’re thrilled to be partnering with them and the entire Charta team — alongside Bain Capital Ventures, SV Angel, Refract Ventures, and South Park Commons! More on why we invested below! 👇 https://lnkd.in/druSN-Na

I’m thrilled to announce defy.vc’s investment in Birches Health as part of their $20M combined Seed and Series A funding round, alongside incredible partners like AlleyCorp, General Catalyst, Will Ventures, and others. As someone deeply passionate about backing companies that tackle important problems for our society, I couldn’t be more excited about what Birches is building—a national virtual clinic dedicated to treating gambling addiction and related behavioral disorders like gaming, sex, porn, and internet addictions. What excites me most is Birches’ innovative health assurance model: proactive, accessible, and affordable care that’s evidence-based and delivered right at home. With the explosion of legal sports betting—think nearly $1.5 billion wagered on this year’s Super Bowl alone—we’re staring down a looming public health emergency. Traditional options like hotlines or generic therapy fall short for this high-acuity issue, but Birches changes that by offering specialized therapy from trained clinicians, multimodal treatment, and peer support, all covered by major insurers like United Healthcare, Cigna, Aetna, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. It’s available in all 50 states, breaking down geographical and financial barriers that have left so many without help. The impact is already profound: 96% of patients report an improved quality of life, and 94% give Birches a 5/5 rating. By partnering with state governments, payors, and policymakers, Birches is pushing gambling addiction into the spotlight of behavioral health conversations, where it’s been neglected for too long—often leading to shame, worsened outcomes, and higher suicidality risks. This funding will supercharge their growth: expanding the provider network, boosting clinical excellence, scaling infrastructure, and deepening insurance and state partnerships to meet surging demand. Very excited to partner with Elliott Rapaport and the entire Birches team! 🚨 Exciting news from Innerworks 🚨 My Co-founders Oscar Hayek, Tom Ryan and I are thrilled to share that Innerworks has raised a $4M Seed Round led by AlbionVC, with participation from DCG, Founders Capital, Firestreak Ventures (Walter Kortschak), Omar Kamal, PhD, Samih Toukan, NVTBL Ventures, Metaversal Ventures, and senior executives from Citi, Coinbase, Checkout.com, and Apple. Our backers also include Crypto.com (Cronos), Tim Draper's Draper Startup House, and my earliest mentors: Eamon Jubbawy, Itay T., and Ahmed Al-Balaghi 柏亚德. We’re building at a pivotal moment: the internet is losing its most fundamental filter — the ability to tell human from AI. Generative AI has blurred that line, and with it comes a tidal wave of synthetic fraud. Innerworks is pioneering Synthetic Threat Intelligence - technology proven to achieve leading detection rates against AI-driven attacks, outperforming multibillion-dollar incumbents. Our platform is already protecting some of the highest-stakes environments in finance, digital assets, and national infrastructure. This funding allows us to accelerate product development, expand our RedTeam adversarial AI ecosystem, and scale partnerships with tier-one financial institutions determined to lead the fight against synthetic fraud. We’re building what we believe will become core security infrastructure for the internet. A huge thank you in particular to Cat McDonald and all our investors, partners, and early customers who share our conviction. The work ahead has never been more urgent — and we couldn’t be more excited to take it on. Dillon Dunteman Rob Eloff George P. I am grateful for the chance to sit in on real-time conversations with senior health system leaders and hear directly what’s keeping them up at night. Through our Healthtech Industry Council, I get a front-row seat to the challenges they’re facing and the opportunities they see for innovation. In listening to these conversations, three themes stood out to me as especially ripe for founders to tackle: 1️⃣ Epic’s AI push is accelerating, but the real openings are at the edges. Systems will adopt what’s “good enough” inside Epic, but founders who solve specialized workflows, attribution, or compliance gaps still have room to win. 2️⃣ Revenue blind spots are costing systems billions. Denials pile up not just as lost dollars but as staff time and patient frustration. The demand is shifting from analytics after the fact to tools that prevent denials before a claim ever leaves the door. 3️⃣ Preventive care still lacks a business model. Health systems and employers won’t fund tools without proof of ROI. The winners will tie prevention directly to risk-contract outcomes like fewer ED visits, reduced readmissions, or chronic disease control. 👉 If you’re building in health tech, the full post breaks down what these signals mean for founders: https://lnkd.in/gUWxwgai At Forum Ventures we’re investing in the founders building solutions here. If you’re already working on one, pitch our accelerator. If you’re still pre-company but ready to build, our AI Venture Studio may be the right place to start. Huge thanks to our Healthtech Industry Council members for sharing their perspectives so candidly and helping surface the opportunities that matter most! Plural exists to invest in startups solving the hardest problems out there, and one of those is how to look after our sick and elderly as populations age, rates of chronic disease rise and the cost of global healthcare grows each year. That’s why we’re doubling down and leading a $20m Series A for Teton, which is building world-class technology for a sector that has seen barely any disruption, even in the face of a growing labour shortage. Teton’s technology automates routine checks on wards, combining specialised cameras with computer vision AI models that continuously monitor patients around the clock and alert nurses when someone needs attention. This system reduces menial work, allowing healthcare workers to spend more time on what they are best at: the human job of attending to patients in need of help, leading to happier staff who are less likely to experience burnout. The technology also shifts care from reactive to preventative, meaning better health outcomes for patients and residents. As an example, implementing Teton reduces falls - the leading cause of injury-related death in adults aged 65 or over - by 82%. The end result is a product that replaces one-off patient spot checks with more detailed ongoing assessment, improves patient outcomes and reduces resource for healthcare providers. This means that in a sector with a serious labour shortage, providers can safely look after people with a smaller number of nurses. For patients, that has the benefit of lowering the overall cost to access the very best care. Co-founders Mikkel Wad Thorsen and Esben Thorius spent more than 100 nights in hospitals to see how healthcare professionals can be helped best by technology, and the value they’re creating speaks for itself: Teton is now live in five countries across 35 care providers. Read more about why we invested in Teton here: https://lnkd.in/gwdcCczx With coverage in Reuters here: https://lnkd.in/g_eqiyex

At Foresite Capital, my team looks for companies where data, science, and leadership come together to create compounding advantage. We found that combination in Thyme Care, and yesterday returned for their Series D. The Thyme Care platform integrates clinical records, claims data, and patient-reported outcomes into a continuously learning system. These insights are being deployed daily to anticipate patient needs, optimize provider workflows, and guide value-based decisions at scale. The team at Thyme - including Robin Shah, a second-generation oncology entrepreneur and oncology insider; Dr. Bobby Green, M.D., a community oncologist and data-driven product builder; and Dr. Bradford Diephuis, a physician and policy architect who understands how to align incentives across the system - are deep operators who are also domain experts. The result is a model that we believe will improve outcomes while creating a richer, more connected data set with every patient interaction. We’re proud to continue partnering with Thyme Care. https://lnkd.in/gfyXm598

In venture, it's really easy to overthink the current iteration of the product/idea and to underthink the founder and their vision. Like Ed Catmull explains in Creativity Inc, great people will find their way to great ideas and build great things, and bad builders will botch great ideas. Yes, the product and how the founder is thinking about it can give you a lot of insight into the thoughtfulness and ability of the founder. But make no mistake that the founder is everything, especially at the earliest stages. Invest in great people building in a direction you believe in. Don't overthink the current iteration.

Excited to share the news on Definite $10M fundraise from Costanoa Ventures and Asad and Acrew Capital We're nearly a decade into the era of the modern data stack, but the reality is that for the vast majority of companies, setting up Snowflake + Fivetran + dbt is too expensive, too time consuming, and ultimately still requires a team of humans on the other side to get anything useful. In the new era of AI, it doesn't have to be so hard. Definite is the AI-native data stack in a box--leveraging the maturity of OSS alternatives to bring a fully powered data stack to customers with built in AI agents that bring the insights and actions you've historically had to hire humans to get. Michael Ritchie has lived this story for over a decade as a data leader and multi-time entrepreneur in data. We're thrilled to be partnering with him in the journey ahead!
