As an independent facilitator, you have the freedom to choose your own clients, projects, rates, and schedule. You can also specialize in a niche or a method that suits your style and interests. However, being independent also means that you have to take care of your own marketing, administration, insurance, taxes, and professional development. You may also face uncertainty, isolation, and competition from other facilitators.

As someone who worked inside organizations for 15 years and then as an independent consultant for 16 years, I can attest to the two options being Very different experiences. Each has its own stressors and benefits. Before I took the leap into being an independent, I talked with a consultant friend. Her main message was "Do it for the lifestyle rather than the money." My interpretation of this was to have a very flexible work schedule for myself so I could take time with my family on their schedules and have my own time during the day. Conversely, it is very easy to work too much. The opening paragraph well states the good number of "howevers" inherent in being independent. One that is not stated is the need to self fund retirement.

As an employee facilitator, you have the security of a steady income, benefits, and support from your employer. You may also have access to training, mentoring, and networking opportunities within your organization. However, being an employee also means that you have to follow the policies, procedures, and expectations of your employer. You may also have less autonomy, flexibility, and creativity in your work.

Two items missing from the opening paragraph are navigating the politics of the workplace environment as well as the underlying culture of the organization. For me, there was a level of conformity required as well as a governing of who I am and how I could best contribute as an inside person. There is a framework around the role of an employee facilitator that can feel restrictive or comforting depending upon the person. This structure, along with the steady income and benefits, may feel more comfortable for some people.

When deciding whether to be an independent facilitator or an employee, it is important to consider your skills and experience, finances and lifestyle, and values and vision. Are you confident, competent, and credible enough to attract and satisfy clients as an independent facilitator? Do you have the necessary savings, income, and resources to sustain yourself? Do you want to pursue your own passion, purpose, and impact? Or do you prefer the stability, security, and benefits of being an employee? Additionally, do you want to align yourself with the mission, culture, and goals of an organization as an employee? Ultimately, it is up to you to decide what works best for your personal and professional goals.

A key success factor for my independent path was I already had a good network of business relationships, both inside and outside my last inside job. I found myself doing a wide range of jobs, sometimes outside my declared niche, because I was a trusted person by my clients. The financial aspects of independence do require careful consideration. Upfront funds are needed for office equipment, household budget funds until you get paid for work you do, marketing tools like a website and social media sites, and more. Lastly, do you like working with and talking with people? The art of small talk and genuine enjoyment in chatting with people is a critical skill/attribute.

No matter which option you choose, there are some tips for success as a facilitator. To ensure you stay up-to-date, take advantage of learning opportunities such as books, courses, and events. Additionally, build your network and reputation by connecting with other facilitators, clients, and stakeholders through social media, online platforms, and professional associations. Lastly, be prepared to face difficulties, setbacks, and surprises with a positive attitude and a growth mindset. Facilitation is a dynamic and evolving field that requires adaptability and resilience.

There are a some consistent elements across both internal and external roles. A facilitator needs to hear more than just the words spoken, they need to hear the full expression of people. Build relationships for the sake of the relationship, not for a specific agenda or goal. Ask more questions. Have a toolkit of ways to dance with others emotions and upsets.
