In my experience you don’t want to use a tripod that’s too light weight and has a difficult-to-use mounting mechanism, such as what is common with most consumer brand tripods. Buy the tripod and ball head separately, and buy a tripod that extends high enough to your standing eye level (with camera mounted). Also consider a tripod that will allow use at ground level as well.

Another thing to consider is the possibility of a secondary support for your lens. They cradle the lens itself and act to take the weight of it off of the main tripod. This is especially useful for telephoto lenses and other long lenses where it’s nearly impossible for a tripod alone to balance without the use of hands. This secondary support is essential if you’re going to use a timer/shutter combo to take extreme wide angles or long shots of shy animals, nature, or even yourself.

The second step is to set up your tripod correctly before you start shooting. You want to make sure that your tripod is stable and level, and that your camera is mounted securely. You can use a bubble level or the electronic level on your camera to check the alignment. I’ve found that it helps to use stabilizing assistance like a tripod weight that connects to the inside of the legs like a hammock. This way it leaves the feet of the tripod free for adjustment on uneven ground while making sure the weight of your camera is counter-balanced. They also sell varieties that attach to the feet for additional stability. Outdoor weather is unpredictable and an errant gust of wind has knocked over many an unweighted tripod.

Before you start with complicated scenarios, start simple. Start a collection of what appeals to you, and put it in a book. A basic understanding of aperture: read a book on exposure. Test the aperture out keep a diary. The beauty of digital, you can shoot all day and see the results quickly. For technical people this will be excruciating. You can teach someone in one day the basics. Shoot the same image with changing the f stop for each click in aperture mode to see the difference. Rht click the image properties to see what was done. Once you are comfortable with ap mode, go to manual mode. Shoot what you like histograms and techniques will come. Deciding what to do with your images will be the next hurdle.
