Beyond Post-Work Digital Labor: Fostering Arendtian Action in the Metaverse

Abstract

The accelerating pace of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation raises profound concerns about the erosion of traditional employment and the future of human purpose. This paper explores the potential of the metaverse to serve as a platform for meaningful life engagement in a post-work society. As the metaverse evolves into a potential site for work, sociality, and creativity, its role in a future of widespread technological unemployment demands critical scrutiny. Employing Hannah Arendt’s tripartite framework of labor, work, and action, the study evaluates whether immersive virtual environments can authentically support human flourishing through purpose, social connection, creativity, and political engagement. Drawing on psychological theories of meaning, sociological analyses of community, and philosophical critiques of technology, the paper bridges techno-optimistic visions and humanistic resistance by emphasizing the structural, political, and ethical conditions under which the metaverse might enable genuine action. While opportunities exist for education, creativity, and alternative economic participation, risks such as digital commodification, reality distortion, inequitable access, and the expansion of invisible labor remain pressing concerns. The metaverse’s value is contingent not on its technological sophistication but on its governance, design ethics, and capacity to foster democratic public spaces. Ultimately, the metaverse may form one component of a broader post-work ecology of meaning, but it cannot replace the fundamental need for authentic human action, community, and world-building.

1. Introduction

The twenty-first century is witnessing an unprecedented technological transformation, one that raises fundamental questions about the nature of human purpose, identity, and fulfillment. With each passing year, artificial intelligence (AI) and automation extend their capabilities into domains once considered the exclusive province of human cognition and skill. From generative AI that can produce text, music, and art, to robotic systems capable of performing complex physical tasks, the boundaries of “human work” are eroding. Forecasts by McKinsey Global Institute suggest that nearly half of existing tasks may be automated in the coming decades, an estimate echoed by numerous labor economists and futurologists [1]. These projections reignite a concern voiced decades earlier by Hannah Arendt, who warned of “a society of laborers without labor” (p. 5), a condition where technological progress undermines the very activity that historically gave structure, identity, and meaning to human lives [2].

Traditional employment has long served as more than an economic necessity; it has been a central arena where individuals derived purpose, contributed to collective welfare, and forged social bonds. The loss of this structure, through widespread technological unemployment, would not simply disrupt economies but also unsettle the existential foundation of modern life. What happens to human meaning in a world where machines assume the bulk of labor and work? This question demands not only economic or technical answers but also philosophical reflection.

Within this shifting landscape, the metaverse has emerged as a contested vision of the future. Popularly framed as a constellation of immersive virtual worlds interconnected by advanced digital infrastructure, the metaverse has been alternately heralded as the next frontier of human flourishing and condemned as a sophisticated distraction engineered by corporate interests [3, 4]. While techno-optimists portray it as a platform for unprecedented creativity, collaboration, and even symbiosis with artificial intelligence [5], humanistic critics liken it to a twenty-first century Plato’s Cave, warning of alienation and spiritual manipulation.

The metaverse, as the latest stage of digital society, provides a vital context for rethinking digital labor and meaning in a post-work world. Platforms such as Roblox and Fortnite already illustrate how virtual worlds host large-scale creative economies where users design, build, and monetize digital goods, events, and experiences [4, 6, 7]. These environments blur distinctions between play and work: while they enable world-building [8] and cultural production akin to Arendt’s category of work, they also reproduce precarious, gig-style labor such as streaming, audience maintenance, and virtual customer service [9]. Moreover, the metaverse relies on extensive invisible labor, especially in AI-assisted content moderation and data annotation, which shapes what is visible in virtual spaces and determines the boundaries of public discourse [10, 11]; Governance further complicates these dynamics, since ownership and decision-making are concentrated in private platforms, raising questions about political participation, digital citizenship, and the possibility of collective action [12]. The metaverse exemplifies the blurring of leisure, labor, and politics [3, 13]; making it a crucial case through which to test whether Arendt’s categories of labor, work, and action can still sustain meaning in an era of technological unemployment.

This paper argues that the truth lies neither in utopian celebration nor in wholesale rejection. Rather, the value of the metaverse must be assessed through a critical philosophical lens attentive to the conditions that make human life meaningful. To this end, Hannah Arendt’s tripartite framework of labor, work, and action provides a uniquely powerful tool. By distinguishing between cyclical biological maintenance (labor), durable world-building (work), and spontaneous political engagement (action), Arendt enables us to ask: Does the metaverse foster genuine action and world-building, or does it merely extend digital labor and consumption? The metaverse may support human flourishing in a post-work society, but only if its governance structures (ie. currently raising critical questions about platform ownership, democratic participation, and digital citizenship) are deliberately designed to prioritize plurality and action over commodification and control [10, 14]. Otherwise, it will intensify the crisis of meaning by accelerating the complete dissolution of boundaries between leisure, labor, and political engagement, creating a world where all experience is susceptible to commodification.

2. Theoretical framework: Understanding the metaverse

The metaverse has become a term of both popular fascination and scholarly contention. Its conceptual roots can be traced to Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash, which imagined a three-dimensional digital universe where avatars interacted in shared virtual space [15]. Today, definitions converge on a set of core features: immersive environments, avatar-based representation, user-generated content, synchronous interactions, and persistent digital economies [6, 16]. The World Economic Forum defines it as an “interconnected web of ubiquitous virtual worlds” overlapping with and augmenting physical reality [17].

Technological trajectories suggest increasing accessibility and integration of such environments by the 2030s and 2040s, driven by advances in computational processing, spatial computing, haptic feedback, and telecommunications infrastructure [18]. Industry estimates predict that by 2026, one-quarter of the global population will spend at least one hour per day in metaverse environments. While some scholars anticipate widespread adoption and profound social transformation, others remain skeptical, noting both technological and cultural barriers [3].

Importantly, the metaverse is not monolithic but shaped by competing visions. Techno-optimistic narratives [5] celebrate it as a platform for human–AI collaboration and collective intelligence, suggesting it may function as an evolutionary leap in human consciousness. In contrast, humanistic critiques warn of alienation, manipulation, and loss of authentic experience [4]. A recent study by Tommasi highlights precisely this tension: while the metaverse could enable new forms of work and community, it also risks undermining dignity and well-being if subordinated to corporate extraction [19]. Beyond this polarized debate, a more pressing political-philosophical critique has emerged. Scholars like Bay argue that the primary danger of the metaverse lies not in mere alienation but in its capacity to disrupt the very foundation of democracy by dismantling the intersubjective common reality necessary for the establishment of factual truth [20].

Arendt’s framework provides a critical alternative to both extremes. Her tripartite distinction is particularly apt for analyzing virtual environments. Labor, in her sense, refers to repetitive activities tied to biological necessity and cyclical consumption. Work involves the creation of durable objects and institutions that outlast individual lives, forming a stable human world. Action, the highest form of activity, represents spontaneous political engagement and the capacity to initiate something genuinely new through interaction with others in a public space [2].

This challenges Arendt’s categories themselves, demanding we examine how they manifest in a digitally mediated world. The framework for evaluation thus becomes:

Labor: Does activity consist of repetitive, consumptive cycles (e.g., maintaining a social profile, performing algorithmically rewarded tasks)?

Work: Does it result in durable contributions to a shared world (e.g., creating a persistent virtual artifact or institution)?

Action: Does it involve unpredictable, collective world-building and political speech in a public realm?

As Atak and Özkoc demonstrate in their Delphi study on the impact of the metaverse on work life, current expert opinion is divided [21]. While some foresee empowering new professional and creative opportunities, others anticipate exploitative gig-like arrangements extended into virtual space. Their findings reinforce the need for a framework capable of distinguishing meaningful action from disguised labor, a role Arendt’s categories are uniquely suited to play. As such, the metaverse is best understood as a socio-technical system whose value depends not on inherent features but on governance, design, and cultural orientation.

3. Psychological foundations of meaningful life

If the metaverse is to be considered a platform for human flourishing in a post-work society, it must be measured against the psychological foundations of meaning. Research across psychology and sociology consistently affirms that meaning in life is not a luxury but a fundamental human need with profound implications for health, resilience, and well-being [22]. Individuals who perceive their lives as meaningful exhibit greater longevity, lower stress levels, and higher overall life satisfaction.

One influential framework is Paul Wong’s PURE model, which identifies four essential dimensions of meaning: Purpose (directional motivation toward valued goals), Understanding (coherent comprehension of self and world), Responsible Action (ethical engagement with others and environment), and Enjoyment/Evaluation (positive affect and reflective life satisfaction) [23]. A meaningful life thus requires both cognitive coherence and emotional fulfillment, achieved not through passive consumption but through purposeful action. Sources of meaning are diverse, including relationships, creativity, achievement, spirituality, and contribution to community [24]. Traditionally, employment has been a central arena for many of these dimensions. Work provided not only income but also identity, structure, and opportunities for contribution. Its disappearance or reduction therefore raises existential risks: without replacement structures, individuals may face a void in purpose and belonging.

The challenge for the metaverse, then, is to serve as more than a platform for entertainment or distraction. Can it provide opportunities for purposeful goal pursuit, coherent self-understanding, responsible engagement, and genuine enjoyment? Some evidence suggests promise. For example, Youssef et al., in their field study of Generation Z in the United Arab Emirates, found that engagement with metaverse technologies enhanced social development and psychological well-being, particularly by expanding avenues for self-expression and community building [25]. Their findings support the possibility that virtual environments can contribute positively to meaning, especially when they foster authentic social connection.

However, as Arendt reminds us, not all activity is equal. If virtual engagement primarily resembles labor its contribution to meaning will be limited. Even if virtual worlds enable the creation of durable digital artifacts (work), the deepest form of flourishing requires spaces for action: authentic, unpredictable engagement with others in a shared world. Without such opportunities, the metaverse risks producing not a meaningful post-work society but a digitized extension of consumption and invisible labor. This digital labor includes not only the visible acts of content creation and moderation but also the invisible extraction of behavioral data used for hypertargeted personalization [20], a process that actively works against the formation of a shared, common reality. Thus, the psychological foundation for evaluating the metaverse is clear: its capacity to support meaning hinges not on immersion or realism, but on whether it provides opportunities for purpose, understanding, responsibility, and joy rooted in authentic human action.

4. Virtual communities and social connection

The metaverse’s most celebrated promise is its potential to create new forms of community and social connection. Humans are, as Aristotle observed, “political animals,” oriented toward life in common. Social relationships have always been central to the experience of meaning, providing a sense of belonging, recognition, and purpose. When technological unemployment disrupts traditional workplaces, ie. the institutions that historically organized social life, the need for alternative arenas of connection becomes particularly pressing.

The metaverse can facilitate such connection through real-time multisensory interactions mediated by avatars and supported by immersive environments. Unlike two-dimensional platforms such as Facebook or Zoom, metaverse environments allow individuals to experience co-presence, the phenomenological sense of “being there” with others, which research has shown can generate more robust forms of engagement [3, 26]. This enhanced presence opens possibilities for collaboration, friendship, and even intimacy that transcend geographical boundaries.

Yet the question remains: what kind of connection does the metaverse foster? Is it merely an intensified version of social media performance and maintenance, or does it create conditions for deeper, authentic relationships and political community?

Recent empirical research offers both promise and caution. Youssef et al., in a large-scale study of Generation Z in the UAE, found that metaverse participation enhanced psychological well-being and social development by expanding opportunities for interaction and identity exploration [25]. Their findings confirm that, at least for younger cohorts, virtual environments can strengthen rather than erode social capital. Similarly, Atak and Özkoc emphasize that expert consensus points to the metaverse as an arena where professional collaboration and community building may occur alongside entertainment [21].

However, other studies highlight risks. Platform design often prioritizes engagement metrics such as time spent, interactions logged, data collected, over the quality of human relationships. This creates incentives for shallow, consumptive sociality rather than authentic dialogue or collective action. Arendt warned of precisely this danger: a society where the public realm, the space of action, is replaced by endless laboring and consuming [2]. If metaverse platforms are governed primarily by corporate interests, algorithmically curating experiences to maximize advertising revenue, they may simulate community while suppressing genuine plurality and unpredictability.

The development of identity within virtual communities illustrates both potential and peril. Avatars offer opportunities for self-expression, experimentation, and even liberation from physical or social constraints. Research suggests that identity play can promote self-expansion and personal growth [27]. Yet it can also lead to confusion or dissonance if virtual and offline selves diverge too radically. Aligning digital identities with authentic self-concepts is crucial for psychological well-being.

From an Arendtian perspective, the danger lies in mistaking mere performance for action. When individuals endlessly curate avatars, optimize social metrics, and maintain reputational profiles, they may in fact be laboring rather than acting in the deeper sense of initiating something new and unpredictable. The challenge for the metaverse is to resist becoming a glorified extension of social media’s performative cycles and instead to cultivate spaces where authentic political speech and collective deliberation can occur.

The stakes are high. In a post-work society, where traditional structures of belonging may erode, the metaverse could either become a refuge of genuine community or a sophisticated distraction machine. Its future role will depend not on technological immersion but on whether it is architected to support the plurality and freedom of action that Arendt deemed essential to human flourishing.

5. Creativity, work, and identity in virtual spaces

Beyond social connection, one of the metaverse’s strongest claims to significance lies in its capacity to enable creativity and world-building. Arendt’s category of work, i.e., the fabrication of durable objects and institutions, provides a vital lens for evaluating this potential. Unlike labor, which is consumed in endless cycles, work produces artifacts that endure, contributing to the shared human world.

In virtual environments, creativity takes diverse forms: digital art, architectural design, music composition, storytelling, and collaborative projects that span the globe. Virtual reality’s three-dimensional, interactive nature allows creators to shape environments in ways impossible in physical contexts. This democratization of creative tools is one of the most compelling aspects of the metaverse, offering new forms of expression for those historically excluded from traditional art institutions. The promise of creativity in the metaverse is best exemplified by platforms like Roblox and Fortnite Creative. However, a critical Arendtian analysis is necessary. While users engage in world-building, the platform’s economic model often instrumentalizes this creativity, reducing it to a form of content generation for corporate platforms [28]. The “durability” of this work is precarious, existing at the pleasure of corporate owners and vulnerable to platform closure [7]. This creative activity often borders on gig work, challenging traditional employment categories. The integration of AI tools further threatens to displace the intentionality that defines genuine work, potentially reducing human creators to editors of machine-generated content [11].

However, critical questions must be asked: what kind of creativity does the metaverse support? If artistic production is guided primarily by algorithms optimized for engagement or monetization, then creativity risks being instrumentalized, reduced to a form of content generation for corporate platforms. Instead of fostering durable work in Arendt’s sense, such creativity may collapse back into labor, which means the endless cycles of production consumed as quickly as they appear.

The risk is amplified by the integration of artificial intelligence into creative processes. AI systems can now generate paintings, music, and literature at astonishing speed and fidelity. While such tools may expand human capacities, they also threaten to displace the very craftsmanship and intentionality that define genuine work. As Waelen argues, the automation of creativity represents not liberation but a profound threat to world-building, as machines produce artifacts without human meaning or durability [8].

Nevertheless, the metaverse retains transformative potential. Šímová, writing on the virtual workplace, emphasizes that immersive environments may cultivate new professional identities and creative roles, extending opportunities for craftsmanship and collaboration beyond the limits of geography [28]. For individuals with disabilities or social constraints, virtual tools can unlock avenues of expression previously inaccessible.

The challenge lies in ensuring that such creativity is not co-opted into cycles of invisible labor. Content moderation, avatar maintenance, and algorithmically rewarded “engagement” tasks are forms of hidden work that sustain virtual platforms without producing enduring contributions. Digital platforms often rely precisely on this invisible labor, disguising it as creativity while exploiting human effort [9].

Identity again plays a central role. Virtual creativity allows individuals to craft and project identities through artistic work, not merely through curated avatars. This aligns with Arendt’s emphasis on work as the act of leaving one’s mark on the world. Yet the durability of digital artifacts is fragile. Without institutional support, platforms may erase or devalue creations when servers shut down or business models shift. True world-building requires durability not only in code but also in governance and recognition.

6. Virtual economies and alternative value creation

One of the most striking developments in the metaverse is the rise of virtual economies, or “metanomics.” These economies allow for the creation, exchange, and accumulation of value through digital assets such as cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and virtual real estate. Proponents argue that such systems can provide alternative pathways for economic participation beyond traditional employment, offering autonomy and creative rewards to individuals. From an economic perspective, virtual markets display features of complex systems, including supply and demand dynamics, taxation, and regulation [29]. They also introduce novel forms of value creation, from digital fashion and architecture to event management and community governance. The integration of blockchain and decentralized finance protocols enhances autonomy, enabling peer-to-peer transactions and reduced reliance on intermediaries [30]. Techno-optimists celebrate these economies as democratizing engines of creativity. Al-Maroof et al. note that user adoption is often driven by intrinsic enjoyment as well as financial gain, suggesting that participation can provide both psychological satisfaction and income [31]. Atak and Özkoc likewise emphasize that metaverse economies could reconfigure work-life balance, offering new professional opportunities aligned with individual passions [21].

Yet a critical perspective reveals significant limitations. First, the sustainability of such economies is contingent on continued user engagement and platform stability, both vulnerable to corporate decision-making and technological obsolescence. Second, the translation of virtual earnings into real-world subsistence remains mediated by external systems: one cannot eat NFTs or pay rent with virtual assets without reliable exchange mechanisms.

Most importantly, many metaverse economic activities may not transcend labor at all but rather rebrand it. Šímová highlights how avatar-based workplace environments often reproduce hierarchies and pressures from traditional employment, embedding them in immersive settings [28]. The danger is that gig-like tasks such as customer service, content production, audience maintenance are recast as “creative entrepreneurship,” masking precarious labor as liberation. This echoes Arendt’s critique: when work and action are subordinated to labor’s cyclical logic, human flourishing is diminished. Wang goes further, suggesting that the metaverse is becoming an “integral part of everyday life,” blurring boundaries between leisure and labor [13]. This integration risks expanding commodification into every corner of experience. Instead of offering respite from technological unemployment, virtual economies may deepen precarity by demanding continuous engagement and self-marketing. The Arendtian question is whether these economies foster work, i.e., durable contributions to a shared world, or merely extend labor under a new guise. Virtual art, architecture, and cultural production have potential to constitute genuine work, but only if they endure beyond immediate cycles of consumption and are recognized within stable communities. Otherwise, the metaverse economy risks becoming a hyper-accelerated gig economy, cloaked in the aesthetics of creativity but devoid of authentic world-building.

6.1 Virtual gig work and the architecture of invisible labor

The metaverse economy is built on a foundation of visible and invisible digital labor. Visible gig work includes virtual customer service, event hosting, and live streaming [20]. Yet, beneath this visible economic activity lies a vast ecosystem of invisible labor that sustains metaverse operations. This includes the psychologically taxing work of AI-assisted content moderation, performed by both algorithms and an often-precarious human workforce [5, 32]. It also encompasses the “surveillant physics” of the platform itself – the continuous, automated extraction of behavioral, biometric, and interactional data that fuels hyper-targeted advertising and shapes the virtual environment [14]. This data labeling and moderation are forms of labor essential to the platform’s function but are systematically rendered invisible, what Castellena and Romanelli identify as the “exploitation disguised as participation” [33]. From an Arendtian perspective, this invisible labor is the antithesis of action; it is activity that sustains the system but does not appear in the public realm as a recognized contribution.

7. Philosophical and practical limitations

Despite its promise, the metaverse is not immune to profound limitations that must be confronted before it can be credibly advanced as a domain of meaningful life in a post-work society.

7.1 Arendtian critique of labor, work, and action

Hannah Arendt’s categories provide a sharp lens for diagnosing the limitations of virtual worlds. The majority of metaverse engagement today resembles labor: repetitive cycles of logging in, maintaining avatars, engaging with algorithmically recommended content, and participating in gamified systems of consumption. These activities, though immersive, are often ephemeral, disappearing as soon as they are performed. They sustain life within virtual environments but do not build durable structures or contribute meaningfully to the world. Where the metaverse enables work, it does so precariously. Digital creations exist within fragile infrastructures controlled by corporations. Unlike physical objects that endure across generations, virtual artifacts may vanish when servers close, platforms pivot, or companies collapse. This fragility undermines Arendt’s notion of world-building, which requires stability and durability. Most troubling is the scarcity of action in Arendt’s sense: the capacity to initiate new, unpredictable beginnings in a shared public world. While metaverse platforms advertise themselves as collaborative and democratic, their governance structures are typically centralized, their terms of service opaque, and their economic models oriented toward extraction. Opportunities for genuine political speech, dissent, and co-determination are minimal. In this sense, the metaverse risks replicating what Arendt feared most: the crowding out of public action by endless cycles of labor and consumption. This analysis finds a powerful contemporary application in the work of Bay, who argues that the metaverse, particularly under the control of data-extractive “gatekeeper” platforms, is primed to generate endless cycles of consumptive labor while simultaneously inhibiting the possibility of genuine political action by destroying the common world in which it must occur [20].

7.2 Critical theory and spiritual alienation

Beyond Arendt, critical theorists raise further concerns about the metaverse’s potential to alienate rather than liberate. Serpil and Karaca argue that the metaverse can function as a form of “digital spirituality,” manipulating human desires for transcendence while commodifying attention and identity [4]. By simulating depth and connection, it may obscure the structural inequalities and ecological crises of the physical world. This risk resonates with longstanding critiques of technology as an apparatus of distraction. Heidegger warned of enframing, the tendency of technological systems to reduce human beings to resources within a standing-reserve [34]. The metaverse, if driven by corporate imperatives, may “enframe” human creativity and sociality as inputs into algorithms of engagement. Instead of opening spaces of freedom, it may deepen enslavement to cycles of consumption, now more immersive than ever before.

7.3 Overconsumption and reality distortion

Another limitation lies in the metaverse’s potential to distort reality and promote overconsumption. Immersive environments can produce powerful psychological effects, including dissociation, addiction, and blurred boundaries between the virtual and the physical [26]. Wang emphasizes that the metaverse is rapidly becoming an “integral part of everyday life,” with boundaries between leisure, work, and identity collapsing into a single immersive continuum [13]. While integration may create new possibilities, it also risks totalizing experience, reducing opportunities for withdrawal, reflection, or non-mediated life. Tommasi stresses that without critical governance, such integration can undermine human dignity [19]. Individuals may become trapped in exploitative cycles of “playbor” (i.e., play that simultaneously functions as labor) generating profit for corporations while offering only fleeting meaning. The promise of the metaverse as a domain of flourishing thus confronts a practical paradox: the very immersion that makes it attractive also intensifies risks of dependency and alienation.

7.4 Governance, ownership, and the political void

The most significant Arendtian limitation of current metaverse platforms is the scarcity of authentic political action. The governance structures governing these virtual societies raise critical questions about platform ownership, democratic participation, and digital citizenship. While corporate-controlled environments may experiment with community-led models or Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), empirical evidence often reveals a plutocracy where voting power correlates with wealth [14, 35]. This centralized control, with opaque terms of service and profit-driven models, suppresses the unpredictability and plurality necessary for action [12]. The danger, as Bay argues, is that the metaverse doesn’t just fail to provide a space for politics; it actively destroys the common, intersubjective reality upon which factual truth and democratic action depend [20]. Users navigating complex questions about political speech and community standards within privately-owned virtual spaces are not engaging in action but are rather subject to corporate governance. For the metaverse to avoid becoming a political void, it must architect spaces for genuine co-determination and protect a digital public sphere free from corporate monopolization [36].

8. A tripartite philosophical lens: Integration, resistance, and action

Given these limitations, how should we situate the metaverse in broader debates about technology and meaning? Three dominant philosophical positions can be discerned: techno-optimism, humanistic resistance, and an Arendtian middle path of action.

8.1 Techno-optimism: Integration with human evolution

The first position is techno-optimism, which views the metaverse as an evolutionary leap in human consciousness. Proponents such as Schmalzried argue that immersive environments and AI-enhanced collaboration will enable the emergence of a new form of collective intelligence, extending human capacities in unprecedented ways [5]. From this perspective, the metaverse is not merely a tool but an environment in which human and machine symbiotically co-create meaning. There is truth in this vision. As Youssef et al. show, younger generations already use metaverse technologies to expand social development and psychological well-being [25]. Similarly, Atak and Özkoc highlight that professionals foresee new opportunities for creative collaboration and work-life balance in metaverse spaces [21]. These findings underscore that the metaverse cannot be dismissed out of hand; it does possess the capacity to enrich life under certain conditions. Yet, techno-optimism tends to overestimate the liberatory potential of technology while underestimating structural dynamics of exploitation. Without careful governance, metaverse platforms may deepen rather than resolve crises of meaning.

8.2 Humanistic resistance: The metaverse as shadow play

The second position is humanistic resistance, which rejects the metaverse as an inauthentic substitute for reality. Critics liken it to Plato’s Cave, where humans mistake shadows for reality, enslaved by illusions while neglecting the physical world’s demands. Serpil and Karaca articulate this concern, warning that digital spirituality risks pacifying individuals into complacency, detached from ecological crises and real political struggle [4].

This position has force, reminding us that not all that glitters is meaningful. Addiction, alienation, and commodification are real risks. Yet wholesale rejection may also be naïve, given the rapid integration of virtual environments into everyday life [13]. To deny their significance may leave critical analysis underdeveloped, ceding the field to corporate narratives. This resonates with the recent perspective offered by Costa and Murphy, who also draw on Arendt to question the impact of emerging technologies on essential human capacities [37]. Their analysis of generative AI in education highlights how technological integration can displace the activity of thinking and foster a culture of thoughtlessness. They caution that without a commitment to responsibility, intellectual honesty, and plurality, digital capitalism risks eroding autonomy and undermining the democratic public sphere. Their call to preserve thinking as a core human practice strongly supports my argument that virtual spaces must be designed and governed to safeguard meaningful action and collective world-building.

8.3 Arendtian action: A middle path

The third position, and the one advocated here, is an Arendtian middle path that focuses on the possibility of action within the metaverse. Rather than celebrating or rejecting the medium, this approach asks: under what conditions can the metaverse foster genuine plurality, unpredictability, and collective world-building? Action, in Arendt’s sense, is not mere activity but the initiation of something new in concert with others. It requires freedom, recognition, and a public realm that is not subordinated to necessity. For the metaverse to serve as a platform for meaning, it must therefore prioritize spaces of authentic dialogue, collective decision-making, and durable cultural creation. This entails governance structures that resist corporate monopolization and preserve openness to unpredictable human initiatives. Tommasi captures this imperative by calling for a research agenda that foregrounds human dignity and well-being over technological spectacle [19]. His critique aligns with Arendt’s insistence that the highest form of human flourishing is not found in consumption or production but in acting together in freedom. The metaverse will only matter philosophically if it can become such a space. This approach is exemplified by Bay [20], whose Arendtian analysis does not reject the metaverse outright but provides a precise framework for evaluating its threats, focusing on how specific technical properties like reality indistinguishability and predictive processing can be weaponized to undermine democratic foundations [20].

9. Opportunities and limitations

Bringing these strands together, a balanced evaluation emerges. The metaverse offers opportunities for connection, creativity, and economic participation that may partially compensate for the loss of traditional work in an automated society. It can expand avenues for identity exploration, democratize creative tools, and facilitate communities that transcend geography. Empirical studies [21, 25] confirm these potentials. At the same time, the limitations are profound. Current platforms primarily reproduce cycles of labor, commodify creativity, and suppress authentic action under corporate logics. They risk alienating individuals, distorting reality, and deepening dependence rather than fostering autonomy. As Wang observes, the integration of metaverse systems into everyday life threatens to collapse the distinction between leisure, work, and identity, rendering all experience susceptible to commodification [13]. The metaverse may contribute to meaningful life if and only if it is designed and governed to prioritize action, not labor. This requires embedding plurality, durability, and collective governance at the heart of virtual environments. Without such conditions, the metaverse will not solve the crisis of meaning produced by technological unemployment; it will intensify it. Figure 1 below visualizes the core Arendtian framework for evaluating metaverse activities, distinguishing between Labor, Work, and Action based on their durability and potential for human flourishing.

10. Implications for policy and design

If the metaverse is to become a credible platform for meaningful life in the shadow of technological unemployment, it must be deliberately shaped through policy, governance, and design. Left to market forces alone, virtual environments will likely reproduce the exploitative dynamics of digital capitalism. The following implications emerge from the preceding analysis.

First, governance must move beyond corporate self-regulation toward democratic oversight. As Arendt reminds us, action requires a public realm where individuals can appear before one another as equals. To cultivate such spaces in the metaverse, governance must ensure openness, plurality, and protection of rights. This could include decentralized decision-making mechanisms, transparent moderation policies, and avenues for user participation in platform design. The risk of privatization must be actively countered through public policy.

Tommasi underscores this by calling for research and policy that foreground human dignity rather than profit [19]. His warning resonates with Wang’s analysis of how the metaverse is becoming integrated into everyday life: without safeguards, commodification will permeate all domains of existence [13]. Governance that prioritizes the public good is therefore not optional but essential. Current policy frameworks, such as the EU’s strategy on virtual worlds, remain focused on traditional misinformation and interoperability but largely ignore the more fundamental threat of reality-indistinguishability and the individualization of perception [20]. Therefore, regulation must move beyond content moderation to address the architectural and economic models of XR platforms, mandating transparency in algorithmic curation and limiting the use of sensory data for micro-segmentation.

Second, economic models within the metaverse must be designed to avoid reproducing precarity. Atak and Özkoc highlight expert concerns that virtual economies risk extending gig-like labor into immersive environments [21]. To prevent this, platforms should integrate mechanisms that guarantee creators royalties, recognize durable contributions, and distribute value fairly. Universal Basic Income (UBI) proposals, though controversial, may also need to be considered as complements to virtual economies in order to ensure subsistence for those displaced by automation. Šímová emphasizes that workplace dynamics are already being reconfigured within immersive environments [28]. If these dynamics mirror old hierarchies, the metaverse will merely extend exploitation into new domains. Instead, platforms should experiment with cooperative ownership models, collective bargaining rights for digital workers, and interoperable systems that prevent monopolistic lock-in.

Third, design must include anchors to reality that prevent dissociation and ensure balance. Wang warns that immersive integration risks erasing boundaries between leisure, work, and identity [13]. Designers must therefore provide tools for time management, reminders to disengage, and interfaces that encourage reflection rather than endless immersion. Policies could also mandate ethical design standards akin to those proposed for social media, limiting addictive features and ensuring informed consent. Mental health frameworks must be integrated into the metaverse from the ground up. Bailenson has shown that prolonged immersion can produce psychological strain [26]; designers must address this proactively through guidelines, support systems, and transparency about risks.

Finally, platforms must actively cultivate conditions for action in Arendt’s sense. This means not only enabling user-generated content but also fostering forums for dialogue, deliberation, and collective decision-making. Political expression must be protected, dissent tolerated, and plurality preserved. The most meaningful metaverse will not be one where individuals merely consume or create isolated artifacts, but one where they act together to shape a shared world Therefore, the metaverse must be governed as a public sphere rather than a private commodity. Only under such conditions can it contribute to meaning in a post-work society.

11. Conclusion

This paper set out to examine whether the metaverse can serve as a platform for meaningful life engagement in a future shaped by technological unemployment. Through the lens of Hannah Arendt’s tripartite distinction between labor, work, and action, the analysis revealed both the promise and peril of immersive virtual environments.

On one hand, the metaverse offers genuine opportunities: enhanced social connection, new forms of creativity, and alternative economic participation. Empirical studies [21, 25, 28] demonstrate that users already experience psychological benefits and professional possibilities in virtual environments. These findings suggest that the metaverse can partially compensate for the erosion of traditional work structures, offering new avenues for purpose, belonging, and identity.

On the other hand, the metaverse confronts severe limitations. Current platforms are dominated by cycles of repetitive, consumptive, and ephemeral labor rather than enduring work or authentic action. Corporate governance structures prioritize profit over plurality, suppressing opportunities for democratic engagement. As Tommasi and Wang emphasize, without radical reform, the metaverse risks becoming an immersive extension of digital capitalism, commodifying not only time and labor but identity and meaning itself [13, 19]. As Bay warns, if the business models of the dominant “gatekeeper” platforms are left unchallenged, the metaverse will not solve the crisis of meaning but will instead become its most powerful engine, leveraging properties like false memory creation and predictive processing to dismantle common reality itself [20].

The synthesis advanced here is conditional: the metaverse may indeed support human flourishing if it is governed and designed to prioritize action over labor. This requires embedding democratic governance, ensuring fair economic participation, protecting mental health, and cultivating spaces for dialogue and plurality. Absent these conditions, the metaverse will not resolve the existential challenges of technological unemployment; it will intensify them.

Future research should deepen this inquiry by empirically investigating cases where the metaverse has successfully supported action and durable work, as well as exploring governance models that align with democratic values. Comparative studies across cultural contexts may reveal how meaning in the metaverse is differentially constructed and contested.

Ultimately, the metaverse crystallizes the challenges and opportunities of a post-work society. It demonstrates the complete dissolution of boundaries between leisure, labor, and political engagement, fundamentally challenging traditional categorizations. Whether it becomes a domain for Arendtian action or a hyper-commodified space of invisible labor depends on our collective choices regarding its governance, economic models, and design ethics. The task is not to reject the metaverse but to fight for a version that honors human capacity for new beginnings, ensuring that this new digital frontier supports durable work and authentic political action rather than extending the cycles of labor into every corner of our virtual lives.
