Table 4 The thesis is important in its own right as a presentation of the results of a research endeavour. In addition, it is, perhaps, of particular significance to prehistorians who lack the means of studying past societies using historical sources. Prehistoric ceramic industries vary in their technologies, but usually much more in their styles. This study of the relationship between the changing fortunes of a specific ethnic group within a larger dominant one and the production and decoration of a single artifact type provides a range of models for the study of other artifacts produced in differing social and ethnic environments.
